Xiaomi Civi 5 Pro to launch in May end with thin and light design, Leica optics

India Today16-05-2025
Xiaomi is getting ready to launch its next-generation Civi smartphone — the Civi 5 Pro — in China later this month. An exact date hasn't been locked in, but May 22 is being widely tipped as the day to watch. Internally known as Little 15, this one's being hyped as the most powerful Civi phone yet. Xiaomi's smartphone head, Lu Weibing, even claimed that it aims to deliver an experience on par with the regular iPhone, just with a slimmer, lighter body. That's a bold promise, but the specs do suggest a notable step up from last year's Civi 4 Pro. Here's everything you need to know about the Xiaomi Civi 5 Pro.advertisementDesign, as always with the Civi series, is a major focus. The phone will come in four colours — black, white, beige and purple (official names of the colours are not yet revealed), and is expected to look sleek and feel light in hand. Around the back, you'll find a circular camera bump with Leica branding and a dual LED flash. As per reports, the setup includes a 50-megapixel telephoto lens (60mm), a 15mm ultra-wide lens with an f/2.2 aperture, and a bright f/1.63 primary camera. The front camera is expected to be a 50-megapixel sensor for selfies and video calls.Performance-wise, the Xiaomi Civi 5 Pro is expected to be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 chip. The phone recently showed up on Geekbench with 16GB RAM and Android 15, and it's said to pack a 6,000mAh+ battery with 67W fast charging support — a massive boost over the previous Civi 4 Pro. advertisement
On the display front, leaks suggest a 6.55-inch quad-curved OLED display with 1.5K resolution and a hole-punch cutout for the front camera. There's no official word on an India launch yet, but if Xiaomi follows last year's playbook, we might see it rebranded as the Xiaomi 15 Civi, similar to how the Civi 4 Pro launched here as the Xiaomi 14 Civi.To recap — the Xiaomi 14 Civi arrived in India with a slim and light profile, along with Leica-tuned cameras, priced starting at Rs 42,999 for the 8GB RAM + 256GB storage variant and Rs 50,999 for the 12GB RAM + 512GB storage version. If Xiaomi keeps the Civi 5 Pro in the same range, it could end up being a compelling rival to phones like the OnePlus 13R and even last year's Galaxy S24, especially for those who value a thin and light design just as much as specs.

Apple rejects Elon Musk's bias claims, says App Store treats all AI apps fairly

Elon Musk has aimed at Apple once again, this time accusing the iPhone maker of playing favourites in its App Store rankings. He claimed that OpenAI's ChatGPT takes pride of place, while its apps, X and xAI's Grok, are being quietly sidelined. Apple, for its part, says there's no foul play, insisting its platform is 'fair and free of bias.'In a statement to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple rejected the suggestion that its App Store algorithms or curated lists favour ChatGPT over Musk's offerings. 'The App Store is designed to be fair and free of bias,' the company insisted, adding that recommendations are based on charts, algorithms, and editorial curation by experts using 'objective criteria.'advertisementApple also stressed its focus on 'safe discovery', a choice of words that may not be accidental. 'Our goal is to offer safe discovery for users and valuable opportunities for developers, collaborating with many to increase app visibility in rapidly evolving categories,' the statement continued. Musk, however, isn't convinced. In a late-night post on X, he blasted Apple for allegedly making it 'impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1.' He claimed that despite X topping the News chart and Grok receiving significant updates, including making Grok 4 free to all users, his chatbot could only climb to fifth overall and second in the Productivity category. Meanwhile, ChatGPT has held a firm grip on the top spot, boosted by prominent placement within the App Tesla and SpaceX boss also accused Apple of refusing to list X or Grok in the 'Must Have' section, a coveted feature spot where ChatGPT currently resides. Musk threatened 'immediate legal action' over the matter, although no lawsuit has yet been 'safe' remark may point to a less flattering explanation for Grok's absence from such sections. The AI app has faced multiple controversies in recent weeks, including antisemitic content, sexualised chatbot features, and celebrity deepfake outputs. Such issues could make it a tougher sell under Apple's editorial guidelines, regardless of its download numbers or engagement spat is also layered with personal rivalry. Musk's criticism of ChatGPT is the latest flashpoint in his ongoing public battles with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Altman hit back at Musk's bias claims by suggesting that the billionaire has been guilty of the same behaviour on his own platform, manipulating X's algorithms to promote his posts and timing is particularly awkward for Apple, which is already fighting a high-profile antitrust case brought by the US Department of Justice. The company is also appealing a ruling from its long-running legal fight with Epic Games, which forced changes to some of its App Store rules. Any perception of favouritism or exclusionary practices could add fuel to regulatory fires already burning around now, Musk's threats remain just that, threats. But the broader battle over visibility in the App Store shows no signs of cooling. With AI now one of the fastest-growing app categories, the question of which platforms and products get the spotlight is becoming a high-stakes game. - Ends
