Trump Ends National Guard Mission in Los Angeles
The Trump administration has announced the conclusion of a controversial National Guard deployment in Los Angeles, ending the active mission of 2,000 troops stationed in the city to manage unrest tied to immigration protests.
Originally deployed alongside 700 Marines in response to nationwide demonstrations against federal immigration raids, the 4,000-strong National Guard presence marked one of the largest domestic troop deployments in recent US history.
It also positioned President Donald Trump as the first in decades to federalize National Guard forces without the consent of the state's governor.
California Governor Gavin Newsom, who had opposed the deployment from the outset, filed a lawsuit challenging the federal order.
He
argued
that the deployment undermined state authority and diverted resources from critical needs, such as California's wildfire response. His administration warned that continued use of the Guard in non-emergency roles risked politicizing the military.
Following the Pentagon's decision to withdraw half the deployed force, Newsom condemned the operation as a misuse of state personnel, calling the deployment 'political theatre' that left troops 'without mission, direction, or purpose.'
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also welcomed the move, crediting civic unity and legal pressure for forcing the administration's hand. Public opposition included a wave of peaceful protests, legal actions, and community-led demonstrations across the city.
The initial deployment followed a spike in unrest after intensified federal immigration raids throughout Southern California. Critics argued that the show of force escalated tensions and blurred the line between law enforcement and military intervention in domestic affairs.

Hamas Reaffirms Support for Diplomacy, Preparedness for Prolonged Resistance
Taarek Refaat The Palestinian movement Hamas declared on Friday its full support for the Palestinian delegation participating in indirect ceasefire negotiations with Israel, while simultaneously affirming its readiness for a long-term war of attrition if talks fail. In a statement issued by its military spokesperson Abu Ubaida, Hamas said it is 'closely monitoring' the ongoing negotiations and hopes the current round will lead to a comprehensive agreement that ends the war, secures the withdrawal of Israeli forces, and ensures the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. However, Abu Ubaida warned that if Israel continues to stall or rejects the terms — as Hamas alleges it has done in past rounds — then the movement will not return to partial deals, including the so-called '10 prisoner proposal', which has been a point of contention in previous talks. According to Hamas, more than four months into the resumption of the war, it has inflicted heavy losses on Israeli forces, claiming hundreds of soldiers have been killed or injured. The group also disclosed that it has made multiple attempts in recent weeks to capture Israeli soldiers in Gaza. 'If the occupation government insists on continuing this war of extermination, it should prepare for more funerals of its soldiers and officers,' Abu Ubaida stated. Hamas accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of rejecting a Hamas offer for a comprehensive prisoner exchange deal that would see all captives released in a single phase, suggesting that the Israeli government is uninterested in recovering its soldiers held by Hamas. The movement strongly denounced Israel's ongoing military campaign, condemning what it called the systematic targeting of civilians, the destruction of residential areas, and the continued siege on Gaza for the past 21 months. Hamas further accused the Israeli government of 'torturing innocent people,' publicly advocating for the displacement of the Palestinian population, and presenting what it described as 'Nazi-style detention camps' disguised as humanitarian shelters. The statement comes amid renewed negotiations to revive a ceasefire agreement brokered earlier this year by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, which came into effect on January 19, 2025. That agreement included a three-phase plan involving ceasefire enforcement, prisoner exchanges, and humanitarian relief. The first phase, lasting 42 days included a partial Israeli military withdrawal from densely populated areas, the exchange of prisoners and detainees, the return of internally displaced Palestinians to their homes, and increased humanitarian aid into Gaza, in addition to medical evacuations for the wounded and ill. However, since March 2, the agreement has stalled, with Israel closing border crossings, blocking fuel and shelter supplies, and resuming airstrikes on March 18. Israeli ground troops also re-entered areas from which they had previously withdrawn. While aid delivery resumed in May under a new Israeli-American mechanism, this was done without the approval of UNRWA, which has criticized the arrangement for violating established international aid protocols. The second phase of the truce, meant to stabilize the ceasefire and secure further prisoner releases, remains on hold, with negotiations continuing but no permanent ceasefire yet secured. Hamas's statement underscores the growing pressure on all parties to reach a sustainable solution as Gaza continues to suffer, hostilities escalate, and the humanitarian crisis deepens. Three Killed in Explosion at LA County Sheriff's Training Facility
Rana Atef On Friday, at least three deputies were killed and another one was injured in an explosion at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Biscailuz Training Center, according to law enforcement sources. The explosion took place around 7:30 am at the center on Eastern Avenue, which is home to the sheriff's special enforcement bureau, including the bomb squad. The injured individual was taken to a hospital after the explosion, authorities said. Preliminary information claimed that deputies were moving a recently recovered from a bomb call out when the blast occurred, according to two law enforcement sources. After the explosion, LAPD's bomb squad responded to the scene. The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also responded to assist with the investigation. Employees told The Times they heard a massive blast shortly before 7:30 am coming from the parking lot where the sheriff's bomb squad keeps its vehicles. They heard glass shattering and screaming. In the radio communications reviewed by The Times, a sheriff dispatcher tells units that there was an "explosion with three down." Revisiting Mohamed Ali Pasha's Origins
Rana Atef A few days ago, an Egyptian patriot and the grandson of Mohamed Ali Pasha and Ibrahim Pasha, Mehmet Mohammed Sarhan, shared a powerful thread, revisiting the origins of the man who laid the very foundations of modern Egypt. Kavala, a small coastal town, cradled the birth of the Ottoman general who would later become Egypt's most ambitious ruler. Mohamed Ali was born in Kavala in 1769 (1183 AH). But he always emphasized that his roots traced back to Konya. This wasn't a passing claim; it was recorded by his trusted aide Mohamed Aref Pasha in 'Ibar al-Bashar', quoting both the Pasha himself and his son Ibrahim. Dr. Mohamed Shafiq Ghorbal, one of Egypt's most respected historians, clarified the truth plainly in his book 'Mohamed Ali the Great', published by the Egyptian Historical Society in 1944: 'In the city of Kavala — a small maritime town — Mohamed Ali was born. The commonly accepted date is 1183 AH / 1769 AD. He was a Muslim Ottoman Turk — with no lineage connecting him to the Albanians, the Slavs of Macedonia, or the Greeks.' Despite serving in an Ottoman-European force where many officers were Albanian, Mohamed Ali wasn't one of them. He climbed the military ranks, but he wasn't of them, nor shaped by them. As Ghorbal explained, Albanians had their own tribal leaders and chiefs. Mohamed Ali had no political loyalty in those circles. He was Ottoman in blood, and language. The book was published under the leadership of Dr. Mohamed Taher Pasha, a man of noble heritage, grandson of Grand Vizier Ahmed Arifi Pasha, cousin of King Farouk, and the first Egyptian to earn a doctorate in political sociology from the Sorbonne. Kavala, known in Turkish by the same name, is part of the Drama region, which today lies within the borders of modern Greece. When the population exchange between Greece and Turkey took place in the early 20th century, Muslim families from Kavala moved east. And if Mohamed Ali Pasha had been alive during that time, given his deep devotion to Islam and loyalty to his Ottoman identity, it's likely he would have returned to Konya, the ancestral home of his forebears. The Turkishness of Mohamed Ali is not just a historical footnote. It's how Europe saw him too. In 1834, Count Charles Joseph Edmond Sain de Boislecomte described him in his official report: 'He is keen to preserve the Ottoman character of his government, and he speaks only Turkish.' This report was later published by the Royal Geographical Society of Egypt in 1927, and cited in the remarkable book 'The Building of the Egyptian State: Mohamed Ali.' Mohamed Ali was a reformer, a military genius, a controversial figure, and the architect of Egypt's modern state.
