New company tasked with building up to 40,000 homes on brownfield railway land
Platform4 will ensure up to 40,000 homes are built over the next decade, the Department for Transport (DfT) said.
The organisation will initially operate across England and Wales, with potential to expand to Scotland.
Its roles were previously carried out by London and Continental Railways Ltd and Network Rail's property team, with each managing different aspects of the process.
The DfT said this 'fragmented approach' often led to 'inefficiencies, duplicated efforts and missed opportunities'.
Profits generated from Platform4 will be reinvested into Britain's railways.
The business is expected to generate an additional £227 million by delivering development faster and at a larger scale than before.
Four locations already earmarked for regeneration are Newcastle Forth Yards (an opportunity for up to 600 new homes), Manchester Mayfield (up to 1,500 new homes), Cambridge (425 new homes), and Nottingham (200 new homes).
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said: 'Our railways are more than just connections between places – they create economic opportunity and drive regeneration.
'It's exciting to picture the thousands of families who will live in these future homes, the vibrant neighbourhoods springing up, and the new businesses that will launch thanks to these developments.
'Platform4 will breathe new life into these spaces, delivering tens of thousands of new homes as part of our Plan for Change promise to build 1.5 million homes, while reviving communities around rail stations, supporting jobs and driving economic growth.'
Deputy Prime Minister and Housing Secretary Angela Rayner said: 'We are facing a housing crisis which has led to a generation being locked out of homeownership, all while land sits empty and disused across the country.
'We said we'd do everything possible to get Britain building, and that's why today we're setting out how we'll get more homes built across surplus railway network sites in line with our brownfield-first approach.'
Platform4 will be chaired by Bek Seeley, who has held several roles in regeneration projects.
She said: 'Working alongside our partners and local authorities, we will create sustainable places that bring communities and customers together and leave a positive legacy for future generations.'

Committee calls for clarity on Government proposals to change triple lock
Further safeguards and clarity are needed in the Government's draft laws to change Ireland's system for deploying troops abroad, a committee has recommended. The Joint Committee on Defence and National Security published a report into the Government's proposals to change the 'triple lock', which is the requirement for Government, Dáil and UN approval to send more than 12 Irish soldiers overseas. The Government has argued this will prevent the permanent members of the UN Security Council – Russia, China, the UK, the US and France – from vetoing Irish peacekeeping missions. Critics see it as an erosion of Irish neutrality and a move towards European militarisation. The Government's Defence (Amendment) Bill 2025 also looks to expand on the basis for Irish soldiers being dispatched outside the State. Advertisement In its report published on Wednesday, the committee makes 27 recommendations asking for further safeguards or clarity on the draft changes. This includes a call to define what 'strengthening international security' means in the context of the Bill. It said that the legislation should specify that the phrase will not include the taking part in missions where cluster munitions or anti-personnel mines are used. 'The Joint Committee recommends that the legislation potentially explore definitions for how the terms 'conflict prevention' and 'strengthening international security' will be interpreted in Ireland and outline clear parameters and safeguards for deployment in these cases,' it said. Advertisement It also recommended that 'at minimum' an independent legal review should be carried out before Irish troops are deployed abroad with an international force. The findings should be made available to Oireachtas members, and a version 'redacted where necessary' is made public. The committee also recommends that the proposals to increase the number of Irish troops allowed to be deployed without Dail approval from 12 to 50, should include 'at a minimum, oversight provisions' from two committees: defence and foreign affairs. Why Starmer missed the mark with Palestine recognition
Starmer's conditions include a ceasefire from both sides, while Israel must commit to long-term peace that delivers a two-state solution and no annexation in the West Bank. Conditions on Hamas include immediately releasing Israeli hostages and an acceptance that they will play no part in governing Gaza. This is progress and a major shift in the UK's foreign policy. Previously, the UK Government's stance was that a long-term peace plan had to be in place before recognition could be on the table. Starmer now says that the plan is to work towards a 'two-state solution', where an independent state of Palestine is established alongside Israel. Read more: Realistically, this is not a genuine attempt to recognise the state of Palestine. This, simply, is politics. It is an attempt to appease both sides while attempting to force Israel's hand to put an end to the suffering in Gaza. But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is amongst the highest profile voices arguing that doing so would reward Hamas for the devastating October 7 attacks in 2023. Hamas are also unlikely to back a deal that diminishes their political power. This is a conflict that has been raging in the Middle East since the early 20th century. There is, clearly, no easy solution to the Israel and Palestine tensions. Britain's imperialist role in Palestine undoubtably influenced the conflict. It had control over the region between 1917 and 1948 before withdrawing and leaving a bitter and lasting war. The Balfour declaration helped create the Jewish homeland of Israel, but the UK equally promised Palestinians the right to their own land and peace. So what could be behind Starmer's change of policy, and why now? Read more: The internal pressure is growing on Starmer to act on the Gaza crisis. More than 250 MPs – over a third of the House of Commons - have signed a cross-party letter to pressure the Prime Minister into the move. These conditions are unlikely to be agreed by either the Israeli government or Hamas and any internal win Starmer gets from this move could be short-lived. By placing conditions on Palestine's recognition, Starmer looks weak. On Tuesday, a UN-backed organisation warned there was mounting evidence of famine in Gaza. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) said: "Latest data indicates that famine thresholds have been reached for food consumption in most of the Gaza Strip and for acute malnutrition in Gaza City." That tells us that there are innocent children in Gaza who do not have until September for Starmer to make up his mind. Starmer is giving decision makers around 60 days to act on his conditions - if they don't, where will we be then? The recognition of Gaza cannot become a political game and Starmer must be decisive in his action. But for now, he missed the mark.

You could be missing out on key benefits unless you do one thing
Scots might not be aware of the benefits they are entitled to but a major banking service could change that Over a quarter of a million Scots are out of work due to long-term sickness or having a disability after a rise caused by the pandemic. The UK Government recently proposed tightening eligibility for disability and sickness benefits. This is in a bid to slow the rate of social security spending. In Scotland, from April 2024 to January 2025, 921,819 people received benefits from Social Security Scotland. But how do people know if they are entitled to benefits? Well, thousands of people have accessed a benefits calculator service provided by Nationwide Building Society in the first month of its launch. The service helps make people aware of the support they could be deserving of. More than 15,000 people have completed a "quick indicator", and more than 4,000 have completed the "full calculator," Nationwide said. The quick indicator gives people a "high level" overview of what they may be eligible for. If the quick indicator shows potential eligibility, people may proceed to the more detailed full calculator step. Kathryn Townsend, Nationwide head of customer vulnerability and accessibility, said: "By offering the choice of an online process and a telephone call, we are hopefully making what can be a daunting and confusing experience that little bit simpler." The 'better off' calculator has been launched in partnership with analytics company Policy in Practice. It is available to non-Nationwide members as well as the society's own customers. People can access the service through Nationwide's website, app, and a dedicated phone line. Calls to the helpline are charged at standard rate, however, a call-back option is available on request. Regular savings accounts typically require a set monthly deposit and limit withdrawals, making them perfect for disciplined savers looking to steadily increase their savings while earning higher interest than standard accounts. Nationwide's Flex Regular Saver can be opened with just £1, and interest is paid each year on the account's anniversary. Monthly deposits are capped at £200, allowing a maximum contribution of £2,400 over the year. At the current interest rate, this would earn £84.50 in interest after 12 months. The account is open to UK residents aged 16 or over who already have a Nationwide current account.
