KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Humanitarian Aid and Relief (MAHAR) has condemned the continued use of starvation, blockades, and militarised aid mechanisms in Gaza, calling for urgent international action to end the suffering.
In a statement, MAHAR said the worsening humanitarian crisis exacerbated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) with foreign backing, has resulted in engineered famine, widespread child malnutrition, and the deaths of hundreds at so-called 'aid sites.'
MAHAR Adviser Nurul Izzah Anwar said the genuine humanitarian assistance must be unconditional and free from coercion or military control.
"What we are witnessing in Gaza is the brutal erosion of humanity. The international community must act now and silence is complicity,' she said in the statement.
Meanwhile, MAHAR President Jismi Johari said that the suffering of the Palestinians cannot be allowed to continue under the guise of controlled humanitarianism.
"GHF has stripped civilians of their dignity and turned aid into a weapon of fear. MAHAR stands resolutely in support of restoring full access to United Nations (UN)-coordinated relief efforts and reopening all land borders for safe and unrestricted humanitarian assistance,' he said.
The organisation has joined the international call to immediately dismantle the GHF system, restore UN-led humanitarian operations and reopen all border crossings for safe and unimpeded aid delivery.
In full solidarity with the Palestinians, MAHAR rejects widespread aid airdrops over Gaza, citing Israeli control of the airspace and concerns over safety and effectiveness.
"Previous airdrops have tragically resulted in civilian casualties, including people being crushed while attempting to retrieve aid. In several cases, the aid landed in militarised zones, exposing desperate civilians to sniper fire -- mirroring the same fatal risks reported at GHF-controlled sites,' it said.

Kremlin slams Trump tariff pressure on India over Russian oil as illegal

Russia's President Vladimir Putin and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi attend an awarding ceremony at the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia July 9, 2024. REUTERS/Evgenia Novozhenina/File Photo MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russia accused the United States on Tuesday of exerting illegal trade pressure on India after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened again to raise tariffs on India over its purchases of Russian oil. "We hear many statements that are in fact threats, attempts to force countries to cut trade relations with Russia. We do not consider such statements to be legal," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. "We believe that sovereign countries should have and do have the right to choose their own trading partners, partners for trade and economic cooperation, and to choose for themselves the forms of trade and economic cooperation that are in the interests of a particular country." Trump has said that from Friday he will impose new sanctions on Russia as well as on countries that buy its energy exports, unless Moscow takes steps to end its 3-1/2 year conflict with Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin has signalled no change in Russia's stance on the war, despite the looming deadline. New Delhi has called Trump's threats "unjustified" and vowed to protect its economic interests, deepening a trade rift between the two major economies. Two Indian government sources told Reuters on the weekend that India will keep purchasing oil from Russia despite Trump's threats. Israel prepares new Gaza war plan amid hostage crisis

JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is preparing to unveil an updated military strategy for Gaza, aiming to dismantle Hamas and secure the release of remaining hostages. Reports suggest the plan includes a full reoccupation of the Palestinian territory, though officials have yet to confirm details. Netanyahu is expected to meet top security officials in Jerusalem to finalize the strategy. Meanwhile, Israel's diplomats are pushing for a UN Security Council session to highlight the hostage crisis, diverting attention from Gaza's worsening humanitarian crisis. 'Netanyahu wants the Israeli army to conquer the entire Gaza Strip,' public broadcaster Kan reported, citing unnamed cabinet members. Private newspaper Maariv echoed the sentiment, declaring, 'The die is cast. We're en route for the total conquest of Gaza.' Hamas officials dismissed the threats, insisting they will not compromise on ceasefire negotiations. 'The ball is now in the hands of Israel and the Americans,' senior Hamas official Husam Badran told Al Jazeera. The conflict, triggered by Hamas' October 2023 attacks, has left over 60,933 Palestinians dead, according to Gaza's health ministry. Aid agencies warn of famine among Gaza's 2.4 million residents, while Netanyahu faces domestic pressure from hostage families demanding a truce. Internationally, European nations are moving toward recognizing Palestinian statehood, despite opposition from Israel and the US. Netanyahu's far-right coalition allies, however, see the war as an opportunity to tighten control over Gaza and the West Bank. Israel's COGAT agency announced a partial reopening of private-sector trade with Gaza to ease reliance on aid convoys. Approved goods include food staples and hygiene products, subject to strict security checks to prevent Hamas involvement. Netanyahu reiterated Israel's war goals: 'the defeat of the enemy, the release of our hostages, and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a threat.' Meanwhile, retired Israeli security officials urged US intervention to end the conflict, arguing military objectives have been met. - AFP
