More than 250million drivers will be able to TALK to their car in major change – and users already want to switch it off

MILLIONS of car owners will soon be able to have conversations with their vehicle, through Google's new artificial intelligence (AI) assistant.
Gemini, as the assistant is called, is soon being injected into Android Auto - the infotainment system built into over 250million cars.

"The future of driving is getting a whole lot smarter with Gemini, your AI assistant from Google, coming to your car soon," Google wrote in a new blog pos t on its website.
It means drivers will be able to use natural spoken language to ask Gemini to fulfil requests, such as sending a message to a friend, finding an on-route restaurant and even sorting through emails.
Drivers won't have to remember specific phrases, or press any on-screen buttons, to pull up apps or find new stops on their journey.
"Sending messages to a friend who prefers another language? You can tell Gemini to remember to always send messages to Joe in Spanish," explained Google.
"Then later, when you message Joe, rather than just transcribing verbatim what you say, Gemini can help craft the perfect message for you.
"You can edit that message without having to start over and then even have it translated in over 40 languages."
Android Auto has traditionally allowed Android phone owners to beam their phone displays to their vehicle's infotainment system.
But the latest update, according to Google, means your Android phone won't be necessary.
A new Live tool can even keep you company on long drives.
Millions of Android phones can unlock cars using 'virtual key'
"Live is a conversational experience with Gemini that is a perfect fit in the car," added Google.
"Just say "Hey Google, let's talk" to brainstorm, explore and learn something new with Gemini."
For example, if you have an important meeting coming up, Google reckons Gemini can help you prepare.
You could say something like: "I need to have a conversation with my boss about a new promotion. How do I go about this?"
And Gemini will give you a detailed answer.
You can even refine your strategy with something like, "When is the best time of day to have this conversation?"
What is Google Gemini?
You may have heard of Google's Gemini AI tool - so what exactly is it?
Google's Gemini AI launched in December 2023 and is available online, billed as a way to "supercharge your creativity and productivity".
Gemini is a multimodal model that learns from a variety of data types including images, text, and audio.
When a user enters a prompt into Gemini, it generates a response using information it already knows or pulls from other sources (often Google services).
While training on datasets, it identifies patterns that help it mimic a human response. As it is continuously learning, Gemini also learns from your prompts, responses, and feedback.
Google has admitted that "Gemini will make mistakes and might even say something offensive".
The program occasionally cites its sources. If it quotes at length from a webpage, for instance, it makes reference to that page. Sometimes, it generates a URL that users can click.
Gemini has usage limits to reduce traffic, meaning it may cap the number of prompts and conversations a user can have within a specific timeframe.
This number depends on factors like how long and complex a user's prompts are and the length of the conversation with Gemini. Google will alert you when you are close to hitting the limit for a given period.
Google says it has worked with over a dozen car brands to launch the tool.
Across the more than 250million cars that support Android Auto, there are over 50 different car models involved, according to Google.
Gemini will be available on cars that support Android Auto in the coming months, and cars with Google built-in later this year, including the new Lincoln Nautilus, Renault R5 and Honda Passport.
The tech giant is also bolstering its app catalogue to include more games and video platforms.
The new features are set to be demonstrated at the annual Google I/O event next week.
But drivers are still unsure about AI, which appears to be appearing in more and more devices - from TVs to automobiles.
"Man I hate this AI sh*t so much," one person wrote in a Reddit post.
Another added: "It could be good for things like opening up apps or asking questions while on the go but I feel like it could do more harm than good.
"Although one benefit could be a locally running Gemini model which can give you information even when offline. That would be truly useful when like camping for example."
A third person said: "The only thing I use Google's Assistant for is playing music, and last I checked Gemini would just show Google results for whatever I wanted to listen to.
"Fingers crossed they manage to fix that before it's forced... Maybe if I'm lucky it'll only take twice as long as assistant to start."
Others say it's much better than Apple's alternative assistant, Siri, which is yet to receive an AI boost.
"Not sure I understand the negativity in this thread," an iPhone owner wrote in the thread.
"Siri drives me up a wall. Being able to converse with something that will do stuff properly without interacting with a screen (eg text someone without doing a word and punctuation perfect dictation, or find a gas stop in X minutes on a road trip) seems like a huge value add."
Another Apple fan wrote: "What's with all the negativity? I use Apple CarPlay, and Siri is a huge help.
"You can text, call, and play music without losing your focus on the road. It's a huge plus."

Trump calls for Fed board member to quit in fresh attack on central bank

Donald Trump has demanded a Federal Reserve governor resign over fraud allegations in a fresh attack on the independence of America's central bank. On Wednesday, Mr Trump called on Fed member Lisa Cook to quit after claims from Bill Pulte, the federal housing finance agency chief and a key Trump ally, that Ms Cook had committed mortgage fraud. Mr Pulte, a leading critic of the Fed and its chairman Jerome Powell, said he had sent a criminal referral letter to Pam Bondi, the attorney general, demanding an investigation into allegations that Ms Cook falsified documents and claimed two properties as her primary residence. In response, Mr Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social: 'Cook must resign, now!!!' Mr Pulte, who is in charge of America's mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, is a staunch Trump supporter who has become one of Mr Powell's loudest and most aggressive critics. Mr Pulte has written dozens of posts on X criticising Mr Powell's decision to hold interest rates, claiming the Fed's renovation was 'riddled with fraud' and accusing Mr Powell of 'conducting economic warfare against America'. The president's demand is the latest attack on Fed independence after Mr Trump spent months hurling criticism at Mr Powell for keeping interest rates high. The president has repeatedly called Mr Powell a 'numbskull' and 'Mr Too Late' for failing to cut rates and has several times threatened to oust him. Mr Trump's attacks have triggered widespread warnings over the Fed's ability to operate independently from government interference and jitters in the bond market. Ms Cook, who was appointed by former president Joe Biden, has so far voted in line with Mr Powell to keep interest rates on hold at every federal open market committee (FOMC) meeting since December. Her potential departure from the board would open up another opportunity for Mr Trump to appoint an ally who would favour interest rate cuts. Dissent against Mr Powell is rising at the Fed. The last FOMC meeting at the end of July saw two board members – Christopher Waller and Michelle Bowman – vote for an interest rate cut. Both Mr Waller and Ms Bowman are in the running for Mr Trump's pick to replace Mr Powell, whose term as chairman expires in May. This month, Mr Trump nominated Stephen Miran, the chairman of his council of economic advisors, as a temporary board member to replace Adriana Kugler, who announced she was stepping down before her term was due to expire in January. Mr Miran's nomination needs to be approved by the Senate, but it is feasible that he could be in place in time for the Fed's next interest rate decision on Sept 17. Investors are betting that Mr Powell and the rest of the FOMC will favour a September cut after surprisingly bad jobs data suggested that the American economy is weaker than previously thought. Mr Trump and Scott Bessent, the treasury secretary, are in the process of choosing a permanent replacement for Ms Kugler on the board and become Mr Powell's replacement as chairman.

New CEO tees up Tiger to redefine PGA Tour competition

August 20 - ATLANTA -- Brian Rolapp has a new job -- and now so does Tiger Woods. Rolapp, the PGA Tour's new CEO 18 days into his tenure, announced the formation of the Future Competition Committee on Wednesday in advance of the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club. Woods agreed to serve as chairman for the nine-person committee. The aim of the newly formed group, which has yet to meet, is to define a competitive model for PGA Tour events. The committee will consist of five other players -- Patrick Cantlay, Adam Scott, Camilo Villegas, Maverick McNealy and Keith Mitchell -- and three business advisors with Joe Gorder, who serves on the Tour's policy board, and John Henry and Theo Epstein, both of the Fenway Sports Group. Rolapp comes to the PGA Tour as the CEO after a career with the NFL as commissioner Jay Monahan steps aside. "We're going to focus on the evolution of our competitive model and the corresponding media products and sponsorship elements and model of the entire sport, "Rolapp said. "The goal is not incremental change. The goal is significant change." The governing principles of the player-led committee are: Parity: to strengthen a commitment to a meritocratic structure. Scarcity: to increase fan engagement by ensuring top players compete together more often. Simplicity: to better connect the regular and postseason to magnify the season-ending Tour Championship. "The strength of the PGA Tour is strong, but there's much more we need to do, much more we need to change for the benefit of fans, players and our partners," Rolapp said. "I said when I took the job that I would take it with a clean sheet of paper, and that is still true. ... I said, we're going to honor tradition, but we will not be overly bound by it. Now we're going to start turning that blank sheet of paper into action with an idea to aggressively build on the foundation that we have." PGA Tour player Harris English is one of about 20 players Rolapp has spoken with since joining the organization. English said the two spoke for about 45 minutes. "I've been out here 14 years," English said. "I've seen a lot of changes out here, and (I gave him) kind of my thoughts on what's good, what's bad, what needs to be changed." One of the key issues facing Rolapp will be the relationship between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. The two entities continue separate paths with no prospect of a resolution anytime soon. Rolapp said he has not spoken with anyone from the Public Investment Fund, the Saudi-led group that finances LIV Golf. He was pressed about a possible resolution that would enable the world's best players to compete against each other, or at be in the same tournament fields more often. "I think I'm going to focus on what I can control," Rolapp said. "I would offer to you that the best collection of golfers in the world are on the PGA Tour. I think there's a bunch of metrics that demonstrate that, from rankings to viewership to whatever you want to pick. I'm going to lean into that and strengthen that. "I will also say that to the extent we can do anything that's going to further strengthen the PGA Tour, we'll do that, and I'm interested in exploring whatever strengthens the PGA Tour." --Chris Vivlamore, Field Level Media

Solar may account for half of new US electricity added this year, EIA says

NEW YORK, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Developers are on track to add 33 gigawatts of solar power in the U.S. this year, accounting for about half of the total new electricity generating capacity planned for the country in 2025, the Energy Information Administration said on Wednesday. If the plans are realized, large-scale solar power additions in the U.S. would reach a record high, said the EIA, which based its analysis on a survey of developers. New battery storage, which stores electricity from solar farms and other energy sources, may also hit a yearly record in 2025. Wind and natural gas power plants accounted for the rest of the capacity additions, the EIA said. Solar energy does not produce global warming emissions. That makes it central to plans by U.S. states to decarbonize, while also meeting record-high electricity demand brought on by Big Tech and other expanding industries. Many of the federal government financial incentives that propelled the development of solar power over the last several years, however, will disappear under the administration of President Donald Trump, adding uncertainty to future development of the technology. Texas, which last year surpassed California as the state with the most large-scale solar capacity, accounted for more than a quarter of the solar power developed so far in 2025. For the rest of the year, the Lone Star State plans for another 9.7 gigawatts of new solar capacity, or nearly half of all of U.S. solar planned for development over the time period. Texas' sunny weather, availability of large amounts of land and quickly-increasing power demand have drawn solar energy development.
