Four sin-binned as Roosters wallop Dolphins

Yahoo4 days ago
The Sydney Roosters have thrashed the Dolphins 64-12 and sent a warning to the rest of the NRL after four players were sin-binned in an explosive confrontation.
A huge melee erupted at Suncorp Stadium after Roosters flyer Mark Nawaqanitawase scored the second of his three tries in the ninth minute.
Tricolours' forward duo Spencer Leniu and Naufahu Whyte were binned, as were Dolphins pair Frank Molo and Aublix Tawha after a fiery clash broke out.
From the ensuing kick-off Siua Wong was knocked senseless in an accidental head clash.
The late and great Arthur Beetson would have loved the physicality in a showdown that honoured his enormous legacy to both clubs.
The rugby league Immortal won premierships at the Dolphins in 1965, in the Brisbane Rugby League competition, and Roosters in 1974-75.
He played tough and he played with flair. The Roosters did it far better to stay in ninth position on 26 points, equal with the eighth-placed Dolphins. The hosts' for and against is still superior but it took a battering in their biggest ever loss.
Roosters captain James Tedesco had a blinder and won the Artie Legacy Medal for man of the match, but had plenty of mates. The Dolphins, without eight of their best players, hit a brick wall and were unable to thwart the rampant visitors.
Dolphins lock Kurt Donoghoe was heavily involved in all the early heated moments. His counterpart Victor Radley was in his face. It was magnificent theatre. The physicality of the clash was a throwback to the Beetson era, but the Roosters had all the aces.

Nawaqanitawase leapt high to snaffle a Hugo Savala bomb to open the scoring.
The man they call "Marky Mark" was in again after brilliant work by centre Robert Toia. Then all hell broke loose with the sin-binnings before the Roosters administered torment upon torment.
Speed demon Tevita Naufahu, who scored a double, crossed out wide on the wing with a show of blistering speed to claw the Dolphins back.
Roosters centre Billy Smith went over after a sensational tip-on by Tedesco. Radley crashed over and Savala scored before Leniu, relishing his reputation as the man opposing fans love to hate, stormed over to make it 36-6 at the break.
Tedesco notched a double inside eight minutes of the second half getting underway.
Nawaqanitawase was at it again to snaffle a high ball to take the Roosters beyond 50 and the procession continued with Daniel Tupou notching a late double.
The Roosters, brilliantly guided by half Sam Walker, made a huge statement about their premiership credentials while the ill-disciplined and bumbling Dolphins have a huge task to recover from what was a rugby league lesson they must learn from quickly.

Jalen Ramsey happy Dolphins traded him to team with 'a lot of respect for the head coach'

After two seasons with the Miami Dolphins, Jalen Ramsey's time with the team ended with a divorce. Ramsey and the Dolphins agreed to part ways in April and, more than two months later, a trade got done that sent the seven-time Pro Bowler to the Pittsburgh Steelers. While no explicit reason for Ramsey's desire to play elsewhere was ever voiced, reports said he had an "irreparably broken" relationship with Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel and the cornerback's social media suggested the same. Earlier this week, Ramsey seemed to continue to throw subtle shade at McDaniel when discussing the trade with Fred Taylor on "The Pivot" podcast. "I do appreciate the Dolphins and them working with me," Ramsey said. "Not just, 'hey, this team called and, you know, we're going to send you here.' ... Let's go to a team that's going to be able to compete. Let's go to a team where there's a lot of respect for the head coach." Respect for the head coach seems to have been the missing ingredient for Ramsey in Miami. Earlier in training camp, Dolphins tight end Tanner Conner told reporters that the team is better off now that "we've gotten some players out who might have not been as respectful." Who those players were is anyone's guess, but Ramsey seems to be at the top of the list of suspects. Ramsey also expressed regret on the podcast for angling to become a member of the Dolphins in the first place. "When I got traded from LA, I was literally praying to go to Miami, and it was probably not for all the right reasons," Ramsey said. "Obviously, football has always and will always be very important for me, but I also had other things in the back of my mind, too. Like, I want I want to live in a good city. I want my kids to enjoy life and, you know, be in the sun and have pools year round. I want my family to come to visit me." In exchange for Ramsey, tight end Jonnu Smith, and a 2027 seventh-round pick, the Dolphins received safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round pick in return.

'Missed out badly': Ricky Ponting and co called out over 'mind-boggling' mistake

South African cricket legend AB de Villiers has questioned why one of the IPL teams - including Ricky Ponting's Punjab Kings - didn't recognise Dewald Brevis' talent and pick him up in the tournament's auction. On Tuesday night, the 22-year-old Brevis made the highest score by a South African in a T20 international, leading the Proteas to a 53-run victory over Australia. Brevis scored 125 not out from just 56 balls, blasting 12 fours and eight sixes. His mammoth score propelled South Africa to an imposing total of 7-218, before Australia made just 165 in response. Brevis reached triple figures in just 41 balls - the second-fastest century by a South African in T20 history. It was his first hundred in international cricket, eclipsing Faf du Plessis' record of 119 for highest score by a South African. His previous high score in T20 internationals was just 41. "I think that's just my natural way of hitting," Brevis said after scoring 96 of his runs in boundaries. "I've hit 1000s of balls, and I just want to go out there, enjoy it and have fun. Yeah, just watch it (the ball). And then if it's there, it happens." AB de Villiers calls out IPL teams' mistake Taking to social media after the game, South African legend de Villiers expressed his shock that Brevis wasn't picked up in the last IPL auction. He was overlooked by every franchise - including the Ponting-coached Punjab Kings - before being signed by Chennai Super Kings as an injury replacement. "There was such a golden opportunity for IPL teams to pick up Dewald Brevis at the auction!," de Villiers wrote on social media. "Missed out badly. CSK either got very lucky, or maybe the biggest master stroke ever. The boy can play." He added: "Mind-boggling that he wasn't picked up at all! To think that he came in as an injury sub." Mind boggling that he wasn't picked up at all! To think that he came in as an injury sub🤷‍♂️😄 — AB de Villiers (@ABdeVilliers17) August 12, 2025 I bit of both. IPL scouts didn't watch how much he had improved in terms of both technique and his hitting ability after IPL 2024. I still remember Ambani's reaction when Brevis's name was called during this mega auction. — GK (@tactical_guy27) August 12, 2025 Greatest Mysteries of the World:1. Bermuda Triangle2. Pyramids3. How the hell did Dewald Brevis go unsold in IPL 2025 Auction! #Brevis #DewaldBrevis — Vikas Karmani (@vikaskarmani1) August 12, 2025 Dewald Brevis shows IPL franchises what they missed Brevis played six games for Chennai after being picked up late in the tournament, scoring 225 runs at an average of 37.50 with a strike-rate of 180. He previously played 10 games for Mumbai Indians across the 2022 and 2024 tournaments, averaging 23 with a strike-rate in the high 120s. Across his entire T20 career, he's scored 2438 runs with a strike-rate of 154. But it wasn't enough for Ponting or another IPL team to pick him up in the auction. RELATED: Huge boost for Scott Boland as Aussie great snubs Nathan Lyon Stuart Broad's cheeky 'cheat' response after landing Channel 7 gig On Tuesday night in Darwin he unleashed a number of massive hits, dominating a partnership of 126 in 9.3 overs with the subdued Tristan Stubbs. His batting partner only added 31 in 22 balls as the anchorman. Their 100-run stand came up in just 44 balls, with Stubbs only contributing 16. "Just when I reached that century, the most important thing for me it wasn't me. It's all God," he said. "I give it all to him, all the glory, and he blessed me with a talent to play like that. That's the first person I gave all the glory to. It was fun to just be in that moment. It was a special moment." South Africa's win levelled the three-match series at 1-1 and ended Australia's record nine-game winning streak in the format. The deciding match will be played in Cairns on Saturday before a three-match one-day series between the teams in Cairns and Mackay. with AAP

Storm rocked by news about Papenhuyzen as Warriors make call on Jett Cleary debut

The Melbourne Storm have been hit with a brutal blow heading into the NRL grand final rematch against the Panthers with Ryan Papenhuyzen ruled out, while the Warriors shut down speculation around Jett Cleary's NRL debut. Papenhuyzen recently returned after four weeks out with a calf strain to play help boost the Storm with two wins over the Eels and the Brisbane Broncos. Papenhuyzen scored against the Broncos and was back to his best having combined with Harry Grant and Cameron Munster as the Storm look to chase down the Canberra Raiders for the minor premiership. Fans were excited for a battle of the in-form fullbacks this week with Dylan Edwards and Papenhuyzen set for a tantalising showdown. Although Craig Bellamy surprised fans having left Papenhuyzen off the team sheet with confirmation the 27-year-old suffered a concussion. Papenhuyzen didn't go off for a HIA against the Broncos last Thursday, which suggests he either suffered delayed concussion symptoms or he suffered the incident during training this week. Nick Meaney has been named in the side at fullback and will take on the task of helping the Storm maintain their winning ways with a loss having the potential of seeing them drop behind the Bulldogs to third. Papenhuyzen's absence is a blow for the Storm who are dealing with a number of injuries to the side. The biggest is the loss of Jahrome Hughes. The reigning Dally M medallist dislocated his shoulder in the game against the Eels and was set to miss the remainder of the regular season. While there has been speculation Hughes could make a return earlier, Bellamy attempted to quell expectations. 'I don't think we're any wiser than we were last week,' he said about Hughes' return. 'He seems to be coming on pretty well and the physios are happy with the way he's coming on, so hopefully we'll get him back sooner rather than later. I'd just love to see him play a game before the finals to be quite honest, so we'll just see how that goes. We've got four weeks before the finals now, so we'll just see what happens." In good news for the Storm, Bellamy could welcome back prop Nelson Asofa-Solomona after he was named on the extended bench. The forward played in the Queensland Cup last week following a two-week suspension. While Bellamy had his hand forced with the change to the fullback role, Warriors coach Andrew Webster opted against making changes after speculation mounted Cleary would be named in the No.7 jersey. Ryan Papenhuyzen will miss this week for the Storm due to concussion - no HIA for him in Round 23 so potentially delayed symptoms since or training have to pass through NRL's concussion protocols with associated 11 day stand down - worth noting Papenhuyzen missed… — NRL PHYSIO (@nrlphysio) August 12, 2025 Jett Cleary left out of struggling Warriors outfit Nathan Cleary's brother, Jett, has been in sensational form for the Warriors in the NSW Cup this year. The Warriors are yet to lose a game the No.7 has started having gone undefeated across eight games. Three weeks ago, Cleary led the Warriors to a 68-6 win over the Rabbitohs having scored two tries and set-up anther two. His form led to speculation Cleary was in line to make his NRL debut for the Warriors after a form slump in recent games. The Warriors were sitting pretty in the top four this year, until the season-ending injury of Luke Metcalf rocked the side. Webster has since made a number of changes to his halves as he looks to stop the poor run of form. The Warriors have been leapfrogged by the Penrith Panthers and lost their spot in the NRL's top-four after a disastrous 32-14 loss to Canterbury. To make matters worse, Te Maire Martin copped a head knock after just 23 minutes and was deemed to have suffered a category-one concussion, ruling him out of the Dragons clash. There were calls for Cleary to come into the side due to his form in NSW Cup. However, Webster refrained from handing Cleary his debut having recalled Tanah Boyd to the side. Boyd was dropped against the Bulldogs, but has bounced back up to the NRL in a vital game for the Warriors. JETT STALLED: Despite speculation Warriors young-gun Jett Cleary could be named for the club's injury-hit #NRL lineup this week, the yet-to-debut younger brother of Panthers star Nathan has been named in the Warriors' #NSWCup side again this week. — League Unlimited - NRL and rugby league (@LeagueUnlimited) August 12, 2025 While he didn't get named, Joel Caine and Bryan Fletcher both claimed he should get a crack against the Dragons. "Well he went Jersey Flegg Cup, was too good for Flegg, and went NSW throw the kid in," Fletcher said. However, it appears Webster listened to Warriors assistant coach David Tangata-Toa who last week flagged that Cleary still has some work to do in regards to playing against men and bigger humans than he's accustomed to. "He's developing really nicely and no doubt there's NRL in the future," he told Sport Nation NZ. "There's some challenges around him playing against bigger bodies and older men."
