Nasdaq tumbles, European shares rise as investors digest Ukraine peace efforts

Reuters20 hours ago
LONDON/SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Wall Street stocks fell, European equities rose and oil edged down on Tuesday as traders assessed the previous day's White House talks on the war in Ukraine, and looked ahead to a key meeting of central bankers.
U.S. President Donald Trump said he hoped Russia's Vladimir Putin would move forward on ending the war in Ukraine but conceded the Kremlin leader may not want to make a deal.
On Monday, Trump told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy the United States would help guarantee Ukraine's security in any agreement to end Russia's war there, though the extent of any assistance was not immediately clear.
Declines in Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab and other heavyweight artificial intelligence stocks pulled the S&P 500 (.SPX), opens new tab down 0.6% and the Nasdaq (.IXIC), opens new tab down 1.5%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI), opens new tab ended roughly flat after briefly touching an all-time high.
Europe's broad STOXX600 index rose 0.7% (.STOXX), opens new tab, outperforming Asian stocks (.MIAPJ0000PUS), opens new tab, which fell slightly.
Europe's gains were capped by declines in defence names, with the STOXX Europe Total Market Aerospace & Defense index (.SXPARO), opens new tab down 2.6%, as traders saw the talks as a chance to take profit in the sector after a strong run.
With any breakthrough in talks, "I think European stocks are likely the biggest winners, and within that framework, I think industrial companies, construction for rebuilding materials, and financial companies," said Michael Arone, chief investment strategist at State Street Investment Management.
Losers could include shares in energy and defence after their recent gains, he said.
Energy markets were also assessing the chance of an end of the war in Ukraine, and oil prices fell on speculation that progress in the talks could lead to the lifting of sanctions on Russian crude, boosting supply.
The moves were not dramatic though, and some analysts said developments were unlikely to jolt oil and gas markets significantly. Brent crude futures were down 57 cents at 66.06 a barrel, with U.S. crude down 77 cents at $62.65.
The other main event for markets this week is the Federal Reserve's August 21-23 Jackson Hole symposium, where Chair Jerome Powell is due to speak on the economic outlook and the U.S. central bank's policy framework.
His remarks will be closely watched as the Fed grapples with sticky inflation and signs of slowing growth. Futures markets imply at least two 25 basis point rate cuts this year, reflecting a view that the Fed will not view inflation as a long-term problem.
"There's an anxiety about Powell's comments at Jackson Hole," said Ross Mayfield, investment strategist at Baird Private Wealth Management. "Some investors fear the Fed is going to be a bit behind the curve and higher interest rates have a big impact on growth stocks."
Trump has been pressuring the Fed to cut rates dramatically, and has publicly speculated about replacing Powell before his term ends next year.
"The question is to what degree is the Fed happy to ignore the inflation data because they think it is distorted by tariffs," said Ian Samson, portfolio manager at Fidelity International.
"If you look out one year, you're not going to have Powell as Fed chair, there are a couple of governors to replace, so the balance is clearly going towards people who are willing to look through tariffs, and thus continue to lower interest rates."
Such a scenario would likely bode well for equities, help shorter-dated government bonds, and weigh on the dollar, though the impact for longer-dated bonds is less clear, said Samson, adding that he was largely avoiding the long end of the U.S. yield curve.
The S&P 500 will end 2025 just below current near-record levels, reflecting tempered optimism amid ongoing concerns over the economic impact of Trump's global tariffs and uncertainty surrounding Fed's rate cuts, according to a new Reuters poll.
Longer-dated yields have been rising worldwide in recent months. German and British 30-year yields have tested multi-decade highs, and the latter rose sharply late on Monday.
Bond markets were calmer on Tuesday. U.S., German and British government bond yields all fell across their respective curves, with the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield down 3 basis points at 4.31%.
The dollar index , which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies including the yen and the euro, was last up 0.15% on the day.
Gold dipped 0.4% to $3,317.71 an ounce.

Russian drone fell in eastern Poland, Warsaw says

OSINY, Poland, Aug 20 (Reuters) - A Russian drone crashed in a field in eastern Poland, according to early findings, Polish officials said on Wednesday, in an incident the nation's defence minister described as a provocation. The drone hit and scorched a cornfield in the village of Osiny in the eastern Lublin province overnight, just over 100 km (62 miles) from the Ukrainian border and around 90 km from Belarus. Poland has been on high alert for objects entering its airspace since a stray Ukrainian missile struck a southern Polish village in 2022, killing two people. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pawel Wronski told Reuters that the findings so far and some experts have suggested a Russian version of the Shahed drone developed by Iran was involved in the latest incident. General Dariusz Malinowski said the drone appeared to be a decoy which was designed to self-destruct. He said it had a Chinese engine. Deputy Prime Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, who also serves as defence minister, said the incident bore similarities to cases in which Russian drones flew into Lithuania and Romania, and could be linked to efforts to end the war in Ukraine. "Once again, we are dealing with a provocation by the Russian Federation, with a Russian drone. We are dealing with it in a crucial moment, when discussions about peace (in Ukraine) are underway," he told journalists. Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said on X his ministry would issue a protest against the airspace violation but did not name the perpetrator. "Another violation of our airspace from the East confirms that Poland's most important mission towards NATO is the defence of our own territory." The Russian embassy in Warsaw did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. U.S. President Donald Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and a group of European allies in the White House on Monday, following his meeting on Friday in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The blast shattered windows in several homes, but nobody was injured, national news agency PAP reported. Police said they found burnt metal and plastic debris at the site and that corn had been burnt in an area of 8-10 m (26-33 ft) diameter around the spot where the object fell. "I was sitting in my room at night, around midnight, maybe, and I heard something just bang," local resident Pawel Sudowski told local news website "It exploded so loudly that the whole house simply shook." Air raid sirens rang out for about an hour over the border in Ukraine's Volyn and Lviv regions from around midnight local time (2100 GMT), according to messages from its military posted on Telegram. There were no reports of air attacks in those regions, their governors said.

Trump blares ‘Whiter Shade of Pale' and shows off umbrella flown from Mar-a-Lago in bonkers tour of White House Rose Garden

Donald J. Trump transformed into DJ Trump as he blasted music while reporters were treated to an unusual tour of the White House 's new patio, according to pool reports. The president took control of the aux cord and pumped his fist while he was testing the new speakers in the Rose Garden — where a new patio was just put in — for "what will be the best event in the history of the White House," Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday, according to a pool report. The next party is "hopefully soon." Procol Harum's "Whiter Shade of Pale" blared at one point, fitting background music for Trump's second term that has included attacks on diversity, equity and inclusion and an anti-immigration push. Other songs that made the president's playlist included Pavarotti's "Nessun dorma' as well as Elvis Presley's "Are You Lonesome Tonight" and "You Are So Beautiful,' according to the report. Videos captured by journalists and White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino capture an unrecognizable Rose Garden. Its notable green grass has been replaced by concrete covered by white tables and chairs underneath white and yellow striped umbrellas. The president suggested that the first White House party on the new patio would be for the press, Leavitt said.

Where could Putin and Zelensky meet for Ukraine war summit?

Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin could meet for the first time in six years in the hope of ending the Ukraine war - but it remains unclear just where the two leaders will come face-to-face. The White House is in the process of selecting a location for the potential meeting, that has been championed by the US president Donald Trump. A warrant against the Russian president by the International Criminal Court means destinations are limited to countries that are not signees of the Rome Statute. Trump explained to Fox News radio host Mark Levin: "They are in the process of setting it up,' before casting doubt on whether he would even attend such talks. "Now I think it would be better if they met without me. ... If necessary, I'll go.' When asked how he balanced the interests of all the parties involved, Trump said: "Well, it's probably instinct more than process. I have instincts." There has been so far no confirmation from Russia that a potential bilateral meeting between Putin and Zelensky is being planned. Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov told state media on Tuesday that any meeting would have to take place 'step by step, gradually, starting from the expert level and then going through all the necessary stages'. Here are the potential destinations where a summit between Putin and Zelensky could take place: Budapest, Hungary The White House has said they are considering Budapest as a potential venue for talks having spoken to Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban. This wouldn't be the first time Budapest has been a key destination for talks between Russia and Ukraine. In 1994, then US president Bill Clinton met with Russian president Boris Yeltsin and Ukraine's leader Leonid Kravchuk. At the time, Ukraine was given assurances of territorial integrity from the US, Russia and the UK that meant little when Putin launched an assault 20 years later. 'Maybe I'm superstitious, but this time I would try to find another place,' Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on social media. Orban, who remains Putin's closest ally in Europe, has long advocated to open up negotiations with the Russian leader. 'It has been confirmed that the isolation-based strategy has failed,' he said on Tuesday after a meeting with the European Union. 'It has been confirmed that there is no solution to the Russia-Ukraine war on the frontline; only diplomatic efforts can bring a solution.' Geneva, Switzerland Switzerland, famous for its neutrality, has said they would be ready to host Putin for any peace talks on Ukraine, despite being a signatory of the ICC. Foreign minister Ignazio Cassis told Swiss national broadcaster SRF that provided Putin was coming for peace purposes, the country could receive him. "This has to do with our diplomatic role, with international Geneva as (the European) headquarters of the United Nations," Cassis told the broadcaster. French president Emmanuel Macron has mooted Geneva as a potential location for Ukraine peace talks between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after a meeting between President Trump, Zelensky and European leaders in Washington. Istanbul, Turkey A senior Trump administration official said that Istanbul had also been mentioned as a potential venue for the two leaders to meet, as Talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations have previously taken place in the city. On Wednesday, Turkish leader Tayyip Erdogan spoke with Putin on the phone to discuss Ukraine and the outcome of Putin's summit last week, according to the Kremlin. Moscow, Russia While meeting with Trump, Putin reportedly suggested the rather unlikely location of Moscow for talks with Ukraine. However, both Zelensky and the US were unsurprisingly quick to reject the idea. Minsk, Belarus Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko's spokesperson has said Minsk is ready to mediate a possible meeting between Russia and Ukraine. Bordering Russia and Ukraine, Belarus has maintained close ties with Putin. The country's relationship with Ukraine has deteriorated since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion. Where did Zelensky and Putin last meet? Ukraine's leader and his Russian counterpart have not met in person since 2019, when they met in Paris to discuss an end to fighting in the Donbas region. The Normandy Format Summit, arranged by French, German, Russian and Ukrainian diplomats, took place in Zelensky's first year in office after he became president earlier that year. Agreements were made to disengage troops from areas of the Donbas region by the end of March 2020 and a roadmap was agreed for elections in occupied regions of Luhansk and Donetsk, with plans to reintegrate the territory back into the rest of Ukraine. But following the talk, the two countries continued to disagree on issues relating to the war-torn region.
