MAIWP distributes over RM314 million in zakat funds to asnaf as of April 21
KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) has distributed RM314,879,762.44 in zakat (tithe) funds to the asnaf group as of April 21.
MAIWP chairman Syed Kamarulzaman Syed Kabeer said the distribution was carried out through various initiatives and aid clusters across the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Labuan.
These include the welfare aid cluster, education aid cluster, and the Wakalah programme, which collectively aim to improve the quality of life and opportunities for the asnaf community.
Earlier today, MAIWP hosted 600 asnaf individuals, including children, at the Jalinan Aidilfitri Bersama Asnaf event held at the Dewan Perdana Felda.
Also present was Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar.
In his speech, Mohd Na'im emphasised that MAIWP's ability to provide such large-scale assistance is a result of the continuous support from the Muslim community, who contribute zakat through MAIWP and the Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ-MAIWP).
'This proves that a transparent and efficient zakat ecosystem can be a major driver of social justice and the well-being of the people in the city,' he said.
During the event, MAIWP presented a special contribution of RM200 and souvenirs worth RM120 each to 400 asnaf recipients. In addition, 200 children received duit raya of RM50 each, amounting to a total of RM138,000 in zakat funds.
Also present at the ceremony were Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Senator Dr Zulkifli Hasan, and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee.

Ong said this year's PenMentor places greater emphasis on digital marketing, with the module conducted by Digital Penang. The topics covered will include platforms like TikTok Shop, Canva and Capcut. Among the eligibility criteria is that applicants must be Penangites and Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above. The registration fee is RM200 for the B40 group and RM400 for the M40 and T20 groups.

Israel strike on Lebanon kills two
BEIRUT: Lebanon said an Israeli drone strike on Tuesday killed a man and his son in a southern village, the latest deadly attack despite a November ceasefire, with Israel claiming the two were militants. The Lebanese health ministry said in a statement that 'an Israeli enemy drone carried out a strike in the village of Shebaa, killing two people and wounding one'. The two dead were a father and his son, with the state-run National News Agency saying the man wounded was also his son. The Israeli military said it had killed a Hezbollah member and an operative with the Lebanese Resistance Brigades, which is affiliated with the Iran-backed militant group. A military statement said the two men were 'handling weapons used by Hezbollah for terrorist purposes and for observation of (Israeli) soldiers in the area', near the border. Israel has repeatedly bombed its northern neighbour despite the November ceasefire that ended more than a year of hostilities with Hezbollah including two months of full-blown war. In the capital Beirut, a Lebanese military official told AFP that army forces had launched a search in a building in the city's southern suburbs, a densely populated area where Hezbollah holds sway.
