INDORE: Govt. High School, Dongargaon in Burhanpur district has become the first school in Madhya Pradesh to do away with the idea of 'backbenchers' by introducing a 'U-shape' seating arrangement inspired by Kerala.

The initiative, led by in-charge principal Jagdish Patil and his team, places all students face-to-face with the teacher to promote dialogue, inclusivity, and leadership.
The model, drawn from the Malayalam film 'Sthaanarthi Shreekuttan', encourages students to ask questions, participate freely, and overcome hesitation.
After seeing success with Class 10, students in Class 9 also demanded the same arrangement.
The experiment is now attracting interest from other schools across the district.

Uttarkashi floods: Villagers get 5k cheques; say amount 'too less, lost everything'

UTTARKASHI: Five days after the flash flood flattened Uttarkashi's Dharali village, residents were given cheques of Rs 5,000 each as "immediate relief" Friday. Calling the relief money "grossly inadequate" given the scale of destruction, many refused to accept it, saying it was an "insult to our suffering. " "We have lost everything, our families, homes, businesses worth crores. This amount is an insult," one villager said. Residents said since there was no electricity in the area following the disaster, candle packets were distributed to them but they arrived only four days after the disaster. "We spent those nights in darkness. Used firewood to heat food. Govt talks about ration, but that, too, has not reached us. We had to go door to door looking for it," one of them said. On Friday, villagers staged protests outside offices of the DM and sub-divisional magistrate, shouting "Modi Ghaam taapo" over the slow trickle of aid. PM Modi had visited Harsil and Mukhba in March and had used the phrase to promote winter tourism in the area. Those very villages are now struggling for basic facilities, a protester said. A disaster management officer said the Rs 5,000 cheques were an immediate measure, and full extent of losses is still being assessed. Kapil Sibal: Where is Dhankhar, should we file habeas corpus?

NEW DELHI: Leaping onto the silence of ex-vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar and his disappearance from public view since his sudden resignation, former minister and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Saturday asked whether they should file a habeas corpus. Sibal said he tried to speak to Dhankhar but there has been no response, and several politicians have shared similar experience with him. "What should we do? Should we file a habeas corpus?" he asked. Dhankhar, in his earlier responsibilities as Bengal governor and VP, was very vocal and active in public life but he has not spoken or put anything on social media since his resignation as VP on July 21. Taking a swipe at govt, Sibal said Dhankhar supported govt throughout his tenure but it now seems opposition will have to protect him. On X, he wrote, "Can we be informed: Where is he? Is he safe? Why is he incommunicado?" Earlier in the day, Sibal said he had heard of the movie 'Laapataa Ladies' but never heard of a "laapataa vice president". He also said home ministry would be aware of Dhankhar's whereabouts and Shah should give a statement on where Dhankhar is. "Is he getting treatment somewhere? People of his family have also not said anything. What is the issue? We had heard of such things only in other countries but India is democratic so such things should be in public domain," Sibal said. Meanwhile, sources said govt will soon have to decide on Dhankhar's new home as the VP Enclave would have to be readied for his successor. TOI has learnt so far there has been no communication from govt to housing ministry with regard to Dhankhar's new home. TNN

Bhuse's basic military training plan in state govt schools runs into hurdles

Pune: Education minister Dada Bhuse's plan to introduce basic military training in schools from Std I has run into challenges. Lack of clarity, differing opinions among experts and teacher associations, and inadequate collaboration with retired military personnel are among the hurdles. Bhuse announced the initiative in Mumbai in June to instil a sense of patriotism, discipline, and encourage regular physical exercise among students. However, there was no progress on the ground. "Many retired military personnel requested clarification on their roles and honorariums which the state education department has not yet addressed. These individuals did not receive training to fulfil their roles effectively, leading to a lack of engagement with the initiative among retired personnel," he added. According to departmental records, there are over four lakh retired military personnel in the state. Many of them, particularly non-commissioned officers and junior commissioned officers, settled in rural areas and are involved in various occupations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo Bhuse's assistant told TOI that the minister was unable to offer a comment as he was busy in a series of meetings. State education commissioner Sachindra Pratap Singh did not respond to calls or text messages. Rahul Rekhawar, director of State Council of Education Research and Training, said, "It is under process." Meanwhile, teachers and education experts were against the concept of military training, terming it illogical. Mahendra Ganpule, former vice-president of the state headmasters' association, said that the minister's announcement was 'hollow'. "The minister did not take our views into consideration and made the announcement without having any outline or plans in mind. How can a six-year-old child understand patriotism? It is beyond his or her ability," he added. Retired havildar Tanaji Jadhav said no one will teach for free. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
