Russians resume attacks near Pokrovsk in Donetsk Oblast after brief lull

Yahoo24-03-2025
After a short period of relative calm, Russian forces have resumed attempts to improve their tactical position near the city of Pokrovsk in Donetsk Oblast.
Source: Major Viktor Trehubov, spokesperson for the Khortytsia Operational Strategic Group, on the national joint 24/7 newscast, as reported by Ukrinform
Quote: "As for the situation on the Pokrovsk front: the Russians were significantly exhausted over the past two months. During the first ten days of March, they took a sort of pause. During that time, the number of combat clashes in the area dropped sharply, but then it started to rise again.
This means the Russians have simply recovered and are now resuming their attempts to improve their tactical position near Pokrovsk. However, the intensity has not reached the levels seen in February, simply because they physically have fewer troops. They have fewer soldiers and less equipment. The guys fighting on those fronts – Pokrovsk, Myrnohrad – are saying that there are fewer Russians."
Details: Trehubov added that the Russians cannot abandon this front because it still plays a role in their strategic plans to control this part of Donetsk Oblast.
The officer noted that Russian troops suffered heavy losses near Pokrovsk in January and February.

Secret Service to conduct ‘routine threat exercise' at White House

The U.S. Secret Service will conduct a routine threat exercise at the White House between 8 p.m. and 1 a.m. Friday, as President Trump is out of town for a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Secret Service warned that residents could hear simulated gunfire coming from the White House and should not be alarmed. All roads will be accessible, but some sidewalks along the White House complex will be closed. The Secret Service has a double mission to protect the president and conduct investigations on potential threats. These routine trainings are meant to keep agents ready and alert if anything happens. The protective detail for the president has come under scrutiny since the attempts on Trump's life during last year's presidential campaign. An assassin narrowly missed shooting Trump in the head during a campaign rally in Butler, Pa., piercing Trump's ear in a shooting that killed one man attending the event. The shooter was killed. Last month, six agents were fired due to their actions following an investigation into the assassination. 'The Secret Service does not perform at the elite levels needed to discharge its critical mission,' the report found, according to CBS News. 'The Secret Service has become bureaucratic, complacent, and static even though risks have multiplied and technology has evolved.' The Secret Service has been trying to bolster security around the president, especially when he's golfing. A second attempt was made on Trump's life during a golfing outing last year, though the man suspected in that incident, who was hiding in bushes near where Trump was golfing, did not shoot.

Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Friday that President Donald Trump will not initially meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin alone, as previously planned, but will instead be joined by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his special envoy Steve Witkoff. Leavitt told reporters aboard Air Force One the session will be a "three-on-three" meeting rather than a one-on-one. Putin will almost certainly be joined by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, former U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton said on CNN. The other attendee for the 3-on-3 meeting will be either Yury Ushakov, a diplomatic adviser, Kirill Dmitriev, the head of Russia's sovereign wealth fund, Defense Minister Andrei Belousov or Finance Minister Anton Siluanov. Trump's planned working lunch with Putin will also include Rubio, Witkoff, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. This is a breaking news story. Updates to follow.
