Chicago Sky Player Reacts to Big Angel Reese Change Before Fever Game

Yahoo17-05-2025

The Chicago Sky were a talented team last year, but failed to make the postseason under head coach Teresa Weatherspoon. Chennedy Carter and Angel Reese were the team's two high points, but it was not enough for a playoff berth.
General manager Jeff Pagliocca kept his job, but he and new coach Tyler Marsh have plenty of work to do. The key will be striking a balance between asking more of the team's young players but also supplementing them with experienced veterans.

Chicago signed WNBA champion Courtney Vandersloot and traded for Ariel Atkins. However, the recipe for success lies in the development of Reese and her front court mate, Kamilla Cardoso.

Coach Marsh has been grooming Reese into somewhat of a "point-forward." This means she still plays down low, but has the option to handle the ball and push fast breaks.
A change like this can ruffle feathers within a team, but Marsh and Reese have gone about it in the right way. Sky point guard Rachel Banham was asked about the change before the season opener against the Indiana Fever.
"I trust her to bring (the ball) up (the floor)," Banham said. "I asked her, 'You got it? You want me to get (the ball) from you?' and she's good, she's gonna bring it up. ... It's been fun to kinda work with her through that and get through the kinks and figure out what's good for her and what's good for me. But it's really nice for me when a post can bring it down."
Reese's storied rivalry with Clark may take on a new life if both players are handling the ball. This will be a big responsibility for Reese, but she has done it at both the high school and college level before

She can always lean on her veteran teammates like Banham and Vandersloot for help, but it seems like Reese's transition is off to a great start. That will be put to the test on May 17 on opening day against the Fever.

Hailey Van Lith Draws Negative Attention After Chicago Sky's Concerning News Against Fever

Hailey Van Lith Draws Negative Attention After Chicago Sky's Concerning News Against Fever originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Things went from bad to worse for the Chicago Sky on Saturday night as they hosted the Indiana Fever at United Center. Advertisement The Sky lost one of their best players early in the matchup after veteran point guard Courtney Vandersloot had to be carried to the locker room due to a concerning knee injury. The five-time All-Star was unable to return to the game, which led to Chicago coach Tyler Marsh turning to rookie Hailey Van Lith to fill the void. The No. 11 pick of the 2025 WNBA Draft started for Chicago in the second half but did little to impact the game. In the end, the Sky suffered an embarrassing 79-52 blowout loss to a Fever side that did not have the services of the injured Caitlin Clark. Van Lith, in particular, drew criticism on social media following her performance against Indiana. The 5-foot-9 guard finished with seven points on 2-of-5 shooting, two rebounds, a steal, a block and three turnovers in a career-high 26 minutes of action. Advertisement WNBA fans were not exactly impressed with what they saw from Van Lith. "Can someone explain to me why Hailey Van Lith (HVL) is not on the Chicago Sky starting 5 ???????????? 😅😅" a post on X read. "She can't guard a safe !!" said another. "If there was a WNBA G League, Hailey Van Lith would be there," commented a viewer. Chicago Sky guard Hailey Van Lith (2) drives to the basket against Indiana Fever guard Sydney Colson (51).Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images "Post those turnovers she had too lol," a user wrote, responding to a Van Lith fan account. "Right she got man handled out there," agreed another. "I don't like Hailey Van Lith's game man, Hope she proves me wrong but what I've seen isn't impressive," a reaction read. There is still no official word from the Sky regarding the extent of Vandersloot's injury. However, it would not be surprising if the two-time WNBA champ is forced to miss time because of her knee problem. Advertisement This will likely mean more minutes for Van Lith, with the 23-year-old potentially getting the nod to start if Vandersloot is sidelined. Should this become the case, Van Lith will get an opportunity to prove her naysayers wrong. Angel Reese Sends Message After Chicago Sky Suffer Major Loss on Sunday

Angel Reese Sends Message After Chicago Sky Suffer Major Loss on Sunday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Sky have struggled to start the WNBA season. Chicago is led by first-year head coach Tyler Marsh. They began the season with a 0-4 record, tying worst first start to a season in franchise history. Advertisement Marsh took over for Teresa Weatherspoon, who served as the head coach of the Chicago Sky for the 2024 season, Angel Reese's rookie year. As the Sky turned the page to a new chapter for the organization, Marsh was looking to help them take a leap forward with Reese and several other established stars such as Courtney Vandersloot. Vandersloot was playing in her first season back with the Sky, after competing with the New York Liberty last year, helping the Eastern Conference team win the WNBA Finals. While she had a solid start to the season, making a return to the team that once drafted her, Vandersloot was hit with a major blow. Advertisement During the 79-52 loss to the Indiana Fever, Vandersloot went down with an injury. She was helped to the locker room and didn't return to the floor. After further evaluation, the Sky announced that Vandersloot has torn her ACL and will miss the remainder of the season. Upon the release of the announcement, Angel Reese took to social media, sending a message to Vandersloot. "Love you 22," Reese said. Angel Reese, Instagram Angel Reese, Instagram On Sunday, the Chicago Sky posted the official diagnosis and potential timeline, less than 24 hours after she suffered the injury against the Fever. "Courtney Vandersloot underwent an MRI yesterday that revealed a right torn anterior crucial ligament (ACL), an injury she sustained in the June 7th game against Indiana," posted the official social media account of the Chicago Sky. "Vandersloot will miss the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season and undergo surgery to repair the injury. All of Skytown is behind you Sloot." Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese (5). Draymond Green Did Not Mince Words on Chicago Sky's Blowout Loss to Fever

Draymond Green Did Not Mince Words on Chicago Sky's Blowout Loss to Fever originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With the season already over for the Golden State Warriors, former Defensive Player of the Year Draymond Green has had more time on his hands. Advertisement As it turns out, the four-time All-Star has been following the WNBA, and Green caught some of the action on Saturday night. The four-time NBA champ, however, was not delighted with what he saw, particularly from the Chicago Sky. Angel Reese and Co. got themselves utterly humiliated again on Saturday as they suffered a 79-52 home loss to their biggest rivals, the Indiana Fever, who did not have the services of the injured Caitlin Clark. Green took to social media to share his brutally honest thoughts on the Sky's performance. "The Sky play a very bad brand of basketball," Green posted on Threads. Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese (5) reacts to an official during the first half against the Dallas Wings. Mandatory Credit: Chris Jones-Imagn Images Green is not the type to mince words, and he's made his opinion of Chicago extremely clear here. Advertisement As the NBA veteran said, it was a deplorable all-around performance from the Sky on Saturday night. On the offensive end, not even a single Chicago player was able to score in double figures as they collectively shot 32.1% as a team. The Sky didn't fare too well on the defense as well, with players such as Kelsey Mitchell (17 points, five rebounds) pretty much having their way against Chicago throughout the evening. Green is clearly unimpressed by the Sky's "brand of basketball," and after seeing their performance in this highly anticipated clash against the Fever, it's hard to argue against the Warriors star.
