Golden Apple Award: Congratulations to Tara Fox!
PITTSFORD, N.Y. (WROC)— Congratulations to Tara Fox, our latest Golden Apple Award winner. Fox is a reading teacher at Calkins Road Middle School in Pittsford. She was nominated for a Golden Apple Award by the Winter family. For them, school has always been a worry. 8th grader Craig was diagnosed with brain and spinal cord cancer when he was two. Because of all the treatments he endured at a young age, his parents were told he might never be able to read the way other kids do.
'We were told when he was very young that he may have to learn to read differently and we knew that provided such a challenge of coming to school and feeling different and just feeling frustrated,' says Kim Winter.
But all of that worry disappeared when he met Tara Fox in 6th grade. She is a reading teacher at Calkins Road Middle School and has worked with Craig for the past 3 years.
'Mrs. Fox just created this safe haven of a spot for craig and his other peers. We've watched as he has worked with her these last three years and really thrived in her classroom,' Kim Winter adds.
Craig says, 'she doesn't do it because there's not a lot of teachers, she does it because she genuinely cares about kids and puts in all her time and effort and she's just very caring.'
They wanted to show their appreciation by surprising her with a Golden Apple Award. 'I am not surprised very often. This is amazing,' Fox says.
Tara Fox has been teaching for 16 years. It's something she always wanted to do. She says that building relationships with her students is the best way to help them learn. 'Craig and I have had a great relationship since the start of his 6th grade year, and he's worked through so many things himself. I think just having our solid relationship with one another has helped him grow and know that I am here to support him in any way, and I am really proud of the growth he has made as well,' says Fox.
Principal Josh Walker adds, 'She is all about those relationships. She makes meaningful connections with her kids, knows them as individuals not just learners and everything she does in her classroom is about those kids.'
Her support has been there both in and out of the classroom. She regularly let's student eat lunch in her room if the need a break. She also joined Craig's team at the Stroll for Strong Fundraiser. 'She holds a special place in our hearts because she has instilled a love of reading in Craig and is just someone that he looks forward to seeing every day,' Kim Winter adds.

Ruins at Fort Selden Historic Site undergoing ‘major preservation work'
DOÑA ANA COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – The remnants of a hospital structure at the Fort Selden Historic Site in Radium Springs are undergoing 'major preservation work.' The land dates back as early as 400 A.D. and was first inhabited by Native American farmers called Mogollon. Fort Selden was established in April 1865 to bring peace to the region and was abandoned in 1891 as hostilities lessened and the needs of the military changed. Albuquerque Pride Parade New Mexico Strange: Holy dirt and healing water: A look at NM's miraculous locations Today, ruins from the fort still remain and have undergone preservation to protect them. 'We are working on room seven of the hospital structure. So it is the room that is closest to the company barracks, but it is still part of the hospital. We have restored it back to about six to seven feet in height with the wooden pieces replaced. We did not alter any of the original adobe. We just built around it to protect it,' said Emily Wilson, historic sites regional manager for Fort Selden Historic Site and Taylor-Mesilla Historic Site. Wilson said the elements have taken a toll on many of the adobe structures at the site, and preservation work on different buildings has taken place over the course of the years. 'We wanted to start with one of the [hospital] rooms, see how it turned out, and then we are definitely looking to continue that. The next bit of preservation work that you can expect to see us doing out on the site is we're going to be re-backfilling the corrals,' Wilson explained. In addition to preservation, Wilson said the historic site is always looking for ways to improve the visitor experience. 'We're always trying to update and better the language we're using, expanding the exhibit. Like I was saying earlier, you know, we're really putting a strong effort into making sure that we are including all of the stories that are relevant to our site, not just the military history,' she said. The Fort Selden Historic Site is open to visitors Wednesday-Sunday, 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. The cost to enter is $5 for adults. Children 16 years and younger, NM disabled veterans, NM foster families, and Museum of New Mexico Foundation members are free. Click here for more info. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. RHA aiding residents in Danforth and Hudson-Ridge Towers after program termination
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Multiple residents have moved out of Danforth and Hudson Ridge Towers after the termination of a housing program. The Enriched Housing Program's services were terminated for the residents living there. The program was run through Family Service Communities, which said the programs were closed to ensure the 'health and safety' of participating residents. 28 of the 29 former residents of the program are being assisted by the Rochester Housing Authority. They are securing housing solutions for the affected residents. Wegmans provided meal arrangements for residents in need. It was originally reported that people were being evicted from the towers. The Housing Authority clarified this was not the case — the Department of Health was relocating those affected, as others were invited to stay under a different program. Below is the most recent statement from the Rochester Housing Authority: 'As of today, the Rochester Housing Authority has assisted 28 of 29 former Enriched Housing Program residents from Danforth and Hudson Ridge Towers in identifying or securing appropriate housing solutions. Most will remain in their RHA units and become Public Housing residents.' 'We remain focused on ensuring the stability, safety, and well-being of all affected residents during this transition. Our team has done a great job assisting residents and continues to work closely with Monroe County Department of Human Services, Office of the Aging, Lifespan, and other partners to evaluate each individual's needs and provide coordinated support to ensure the residents receive the proper support services they need.' 'We would also like to thank Wegmans for working with us to establish meal arrangements for residents in need of this service. Their support has helped meet critical daily needs during a challenging time. ' 'We thank our community partners and the media for their continued interest and compassion. Additional updates will be shared as progress continues.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
