Congress, VCK question Stalin's stand that special law to deal with ‘honour' killing is not required
The ruling DMK's allies including the Congress, VCK and CPI-M along with activists working for the uplift of the Scheduled Castes/Tribes have renewed their call for enacting an exclusive legislation to deal with caste-hatred induced murders that are passed off as 'honour' crimes. Against the backdrop of the murder of Kavin Selvaganesh, a young engineer from Tirunelveli working in a leading IT firm, who belonged to the Scheduled Caste, they have questioned Chief Minister M K Stalin's stand in the Assembly contending such a special law was not required. Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, K. Selvaperunthagai, on Tuesday said he does not share the Chief Minister's opinion. 'A separate law against 'honour-related crimes' has to be enacted. The Chief Minister had said in the Assembly that he would use an iron hand to end such murders and there is no need for a separate we don't agree with that opinion. A separate law is in place in few other states. It needs to be passed [in Tamil Nadu]. The laws already in place have not been enough to curtail [such] violence,' he told The Hindu. Why do we need a separate law against harassment of women? A special law brings attention to crimes against the marginalised. We need a broad law to deal with 'honour' related crimes. If, for instance, a backward caste family murders the young woman in their family instead of the Scheduled Caste youth who she falls in love with, will SC/ST Act apply? What if she is killed for falling in love with another BC man,' he asked.

Over 46,000 petitions received in 10 days under the Ungaludan Stalin scheme in Salem, says District Collector
District Collector R. Brindha Devi on Tuesday (July 29, 2025) said that under the Ungaludan Stalin scheme, 46,705 petitions were received in 10 days in the district. The Collector inspected the special camp under the Ungaludan Stalin scheme held at a marriage hall at Pethanaickenpalayam town panchayat on Tuesday. The Collector told reporters the special camps (168 in urban and 432 in rural areas) will be held till November in the district. In these camps, services demanded by the people based on their petitions submitted will be fulfilled by the departments concerned within 45 days. A total of 46,705 petitions were received in the special camps held between July 15 and July 25, including 26,005 petitions seeking monthly assistance under Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai and 20,700 petitions related to other department services, Ms. Brindha Devi added. The Collector said that camps were conducted in Old Suramangalam, Chinna Pudur, Edanganasalai, Mallur, Pethanaickenpalayam, and Kootathupatti in the district and proper arrangements were ensured. During the inspection, the Collector issued an order for change in name in the power connection. Officials from departments concerned were also present during the inspection.

14 Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy, Stalin writes to S Jaishankar
14 Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy today for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL). Along with the fishermen, their mechanised fishing boats were also response to today's arrests, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has written to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, urging him to take swift diplomatic measures to ensure the immediate release of the fishermen and their incident comes close on the heels of a similar episode last week, when four fishermen from Rameswaram were arrested and their boat was confiscated. On that day, about 400 fishermen had ventured into the sea from Rameswaram Fishing Port in 88 boats. While fishing in the waters between Thalaimannar and Dhanushkodi, a Sri Lankan Navy patrol vessel intercepted one of the boats. The boat, said to belong to a fisherman named Muniyasamy, was seized and the four men on board were arrested. After a preliminary inquiry, the arrested fishermen were expected to be handed over to Mannar Fisheries Department officials for further January 2025 alone, at least 185 Indian fishermen have been arrested and 25 boats seized for alleged violations of the maritime boundary.- EndsMust Watch
