Olympian Islander Nick Percy breaks record to qualify for World Championships
An Isle of Wight Olympian has qualified for the World Championships in discus with a record-breaking throw.
Nick Percy, who teaches at Ryde School, has qualified for this summer's championships in Tokyo, following a personal best through in Oklahoma, US.
Nick posted a 67.86 metre throw, extending his personal best by 13 centimetres and breaking his own Scottish record.
His throw met the World Championships' quota for automatic qualification, meaning Nick will take to the global stage in Japan this summer.

He said: "I'm so grateful for everyone who helps make this journey possible.
"From coaches and family to colleagues and friends, their belief means everything."
He will return to the classroom after the Easter holidays, while preparing for one of the biggest moments of his career so far.
Nick competed for Team GB in the 2024 Paris Olympics, making the qualifying round of the men's discus.
He finished in 12th place, falling short of the requirement to progress to the next round.
Speaking to the BBC after his performance, he said: "It's very rare that you can say you have nearly 70,000 clapping for you.
"It is a real emotional thing, and I am taking it all in.
"I don't want this to end."

Olympic gymnast Simone Biles has publicly apologized to Riley Gaines after making a personal remark during an intense debate about trans women in sports. In a lengthy apology posted on X, Biles clarified her comment and admitted she had crossed a line. "I wanted to follow up on my last tweets. I've always believed competitive equity & inclusivity are both essential in sport," Biles said. She continued, "The current system doesn't adequately balance these important principles, which often leads to frustration and heated exchanges, and it didn't help for me to get personal with Riley, which I apologize for." Biles, in her lengthy post, admitted that the topic of trans inclusion in sports is complex and emotionally charged.
