Birthday boy Tommy Morrison tied for lead after opening round of 2025 U.S. Amateur
It was a stellar start for the now 21-year-old Morrison, the rising senior at Texas who opened in 4-under 66 on Monday at Olympic Club's Ocean Course in the first round of stroke play at the 2025 U.S. Amateur. Morrison, who had a clean card with four birdies, is tied with Charlie Forster after the opening day in the Bay Area.
"I think my process on each and every shot, and the lines I took, were really clean," Morrison said. "I felt I wasalmost 100 percent ready to go while I was over the ball — which, obviously, you should be all the time — but thatwas a big focus for me today. I think I did a nice job of that."
The start was also pivotal for Morrison, ranked sixth in the world, as he looks to secure a spot on the U.S. Walker Cup team. With five spots still up for grabs, the U.S. Amateur provides the final chance for players to showcase why they belong on the team to captain Nathan Smith and the selection committee.
Only 20 golfers in the 312-person field shot under par on Olympic Club's Ocean Course and Lake Course in the opening round, with the Ocean Course, the stroke-play co-host, playing half a shot easier. Of the 10 players within two shots of the lead after the opening round, only two played the Lake Course on Monday.
After the opening round, there are 101 players at T-64 or better, which is the cut off for match play. After Tuesday's second round, the field will be cut to 64 players, with a playoff to complete the match-play bracket, if needed. Match play begins Wednesday at the Lake Course.
World No. 1 amateur Jackson Koivun opened in 2-under 68 on the Ocean Course.
Among those with work to do to make the cut are Olympic Club member Jacob Goode (3 over), world No. 3 Ethan Fang (3 over), Elite Amateur Golf Series winner Tyler Watts (5 over) and NCAA individual champ Michael La Sasso (8 over), among others.

USA Network, Golf Channel ink USGA deal thru 2032
USA Network and Golf Channel have inked a long-term deal with the USGA that will feature live event and studio coverage of 11 championships, including the U.S. Open and U.S. Women's Open, on their networks. Penn State receives highest preseason AP Poll ranking since 1997
The AP Top 25 Poll has just been released, and needless to say, Penn State fans should be jumping with joy. For the first time in program history, the Nittany Lions were ranked second in the preseason poll. This is their highest preseason ranking since 1997, when they were ranked first in the nation, but ended up finishing 16th in the final poll of the season. Most importantly, though, is that it is the highest preseason ranking of the James Franklin era. This year, unlike previous years, the Nittany Lions will be looking to stay there. Penn State received 23 first-place votes in the preseason media poll, two fewer than the preseason no. 1, the Texas Longhorns. Texas edged Penn State for the top spot in the AP poll by just five total points. Other teams receiving first-place votes include Ohio State (11), Clemson (4), and Oregon (1). Last year, the Nittany Lions ranked 8th in the preseason AP poll and finished fifth, their highest final ranking since 2005, when they finished in third. This year feels different. Out of the top 25, Penn State arguably returns the most talent to its squad, starting with quarterback Drew Allar, running backs Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen, and defensive linemen Dani Dennis-Sutton and Zane Durant. Unfortunately, this did not see them as the top team in the nation. That would be the Texas Longhorns, one of ten SEC schools in the top 25. This is the Horns' first-ever preseason No. 1 ranking in program history. With ten schools, the SEC is the leading conference in terms of teams within the top 25 with the Big Ten a close second, with six. Penn State is joined by No. 3 Ohio State , No. 7 Oregon, No. 12 Illinois, No. 14 Michigan, and No. 20 Indiana. Ohio State continues its streak of 72 appearances in the preseason top 25. This year, the AP voters favored the experience of the Nittany Lions over the new-look Buckeyes. We will have to wait and see if they live up to that standard. Florida football added its 19th player to the 2026 recruiting class with a commitment from four-star athlete Davian Groce on Monday. The 6-foot-1-inch, 190-pound multi-positional player out of Frisco (Texas) Lone Star projects mostly as a wide receiver but also got plenty of reps at running back during his prep career. He chose the Gators over the Oklahoma Sooners — who had been at the forefront for his talents — as well as the Baylor Bears and Houston Cougars, among others.
