Sweden's pension fund, AP7, which stands for Sjunde AP-fonden or Seventh AP Fund, has blacklisted and fully divested from US electric vehicle giant Tesla because of the EV maker's alleged violations of union rights in the United States, as per Reuters. The pension fund wrote in a statement to Reuters, "AP7 has decided to blacklist Tesla due to verified violations of labor rights in the United States," as quoted in the report.AP7 also highlighted that, "Despite several years of dialogue with Tesla, including shareholder proposals in collaboration with other investors, the company has not taken sufficient measures to address the issues," quoted Reuters. The pension fund's spokesperson revealed that the fund's stake in Tesla was worth about $1.36 billion when it was sold in late May, Reuters reported. During the time of the sell-off, AP7's stake in Tesla represented about 1% of the AP7 Equity Fund, according to the report.According to Investing.com, the EV maker had employed about 70,000 workers in the United States at the end of 2024 and is the only American automaker whose workers are currently not represented by a union. Many unionisation efforts have consistently failed until now, like those by the United Auto Workers, the United Steelworkers, Workers United, and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Investing.com reported.Tesla has also been in a conflict with IF Metall, a Swedish trade union, after the IF Metall workers' union initiated a strike, accusing the EV maker of refusing to join a collective wage agreement, as per Brussels Times. The company's CEO, Elon Musk, has repeatedly dismissed calls for unionisation within his global workforce, according to Brussels Times.Because Tesla was found to have violated labor rights in the US, and after years of engagement, AP7 felt the company failed to make any changes.Roughly $1.36 billion when it was sold in late May 2025.

Build or buy: India Inc's tariff dilemma

MUMBAI: Indian companies are considering cross-border acquisitions, establishing manufacturing facilities in low-tariff nations like the UAE and Mexico, and ramping up investments in the US to navigate America's new business barriers. While they have been on the prowl for overseas acquisitions, the new US tariffs would accelerate their efforts, particularly for those affected by such duties. "The moot question is 'build vs buy'. Setting up a new facility could be time-consuming and subject to various extraneous factors. Acquisition of an existing facility is speedier, but at times, has its own challenges, such as past liabilities, obsolete equipment, and labour issues. An Indian company will always factor labour costs, which are relatively low in India, while they would be higher in UAE, Latin America or Europe," said Prem Rajani, managing partner at Rajani Associates. He added: "We suspect any company would set up a manufacturing facility overseas only to cater to the US market unless it makes up the majority of its production and export. The company will also have to ascertain the relationship of that other country with the US." The country's largest listed garment exporter, Pearl Global, is reshuffling production for US orders by shifting them from India to its other facilities in lower-duty destinations like Bangladesh, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Guatemala. Titan, which owns the Tanishq jewellery brand, is also contemplating moving some of its manufacturing to a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) country to maintain low-tariff access to the US, where it is expanding its retail play. Last month, it announced the purchase of a majority stake in Damas, which has a significant retail presence in GCC. UAE attracts a baseline 10% tax on imports to the US, while India has a 50% tariff effective from Aug 27, making it the most heavily taxed US trading partner in Asia and placing it alongside Brazil, another nation facing steep American tariffs. Complex issues involved However, moving production to GCC or Mexico is more than just an operational shift. It entails a recalibration of transfer pricing policies, meeting Fema rules on outbound investments, and following local business, labour, and green laws. "Cross-border realignments bring into play complex international tax issues, indirect tax exposure on inter-company flows, and potential scrutiny of profit allocation across various operations. Those who approach this as a holistic and long-term restructuring of operating models and supply value chains, balancing commercial agility with regulatory certainty, will secure durable access to key markets," said Katalyst Advisors partner Binoy Parikh. Pipe manufacturer Welspun Corp is expanding its Arkansas facility in the US with a $100 million investment, shielding it from America's new trade duties. "US tariffs might be hampering globally, but they are helping us," said Welspun Corp MD Vipul Mathur. Sectors like pharmaceuticals, electronics, energy products, and critical minerals are exempt from import tariffs, aiding players to up their investments in the US. Electronic products manufacturer Aimtron Electronics is looking to acquire a mid-sized company in North America, which will "complement its capabilities and position it closer to its key customers", said founder and chairman Mukesh Vasani. It currently has a manufacturing facility in Palatine, Illinois. Piramal Pharma will invest $90 million to expand its two US facilities -Lexington in Kentucky and Riverview in Michigan-to meet the growing demand. The US is Piramal Pharma's biggest market, employing about 750 people. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays , public holidays , current gold rate and silver price .

Discretion & not rules guided Greater Noida plot allotments: CAG audit

Noida: Between 2006 and 2018, Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) allotted plots for industrial, institutional, IT and housing projects through interviews and presentations without clear criteria like net worth, turnover or liquidity, giving committees unchecked powers to select applicants, a CAG audit for the period has found. In a test check of 170 allotments, the audit found 51 plots—nearly 30%—were given to applicants who failed to submit essential documents, including registration certificates, financial statements, liquidity certificates, and records of past projects. Many of these allottees were not serious entrepreneurs and later profited by transferring land. The audit also found that conditions laid down in scheme brochures to assess applicants' eligibility were often overlooked. In one case, three industrial plots were allotted between June 2015 and Dec 2016 despite applicants failing to submit mandatory liquidity certificates. The screening committee still declared the incomplete documents "satisfactory", and the CEO approved the allotments. By April 2021, none of the units had become operational. The report noted that while GNIDA accepted the audit's findings, it did not indicate that any action was initiated against either the beneficiaries of the irregular allotments or the officials involved. The CAG pulled up GNIDA for bypassing its Board while launching key land allotment schemes, terming it a serious lapse in oversight and governance. The audit found that of 46 property schemes reviewed, GNIDA could not produce evidence of Board approval in 24 cases. Of the remaining 22, only one—the Krishi Farmhouse scheme—was approved beforehand. Twelve schemes were placed before the Board for ex-post facto approval—obtaining approval for something after it has already been done or initiated—with 10 cleared and two (Sports City-2 and REP-1) only noted without a decision. Nine brochures were never submitted at all, even post-facto. The CAG said this routine reliance on ex-post facto approvals weakened the Board's role and eroded accountability. "Taking the Board for granted reflects poorly on its oversight function," the report stated. In its defence, GNIDA argued that prior approval was required only for major policy shifts, while ex-post facto clearances were sought in other cases. Accepting the CAG recommendations, UP govt has directed that prior approval be made mandatory for significant deviations, with ex-post facto approvals permitted only in urgent situations. The audit found GNIDA had wrongly allotted commercial plots under the cheaper "institutional" category, causing revenue losses to both the Authority and the state. It also noted that scheme brochures allowed higher Floor Area Ratio (FAR) and ground coverage (GC) in violation of the notified Building Regulations, granting undue favours to developers. It flagged weak internal controls, the absence of internal audits, and poor coordination among divisions, saying these lapses undermined transparency and accountability in land allotment. Section 20(2) of the UP Industrial Area Development Act states that GNIDA's funds must be used only for planned industrial development. Despite this, between financial years 2007-08 and 2017-18, GNIDA spent Rs 1,180 crore on projects that were not its responsibility, such as a medical university, a multi-speciality hospital, boys' and girls' inter colleges, SC/ST hostels, and the offices of the district magistrate (DM) and senior superintendent of police (SSP). These expenses should have been borne by the respective state govt departments after approval by the legislature. GNIDA argued that these projects were based on decisions of its Board and announcements by the chief minister. However, CAG rejected this explanation, noting that the Board had no authority to divert GNIDA's funds to state departments. While the state govt assured that the finance department's view would be taken on the CAG observation, no update was provided to audit. Audit also noted that GNIDA, despite being set up in 1991, never created a dedicated enforcement wing to check illegal construction and encroachment. As a result, nearly 550 hectares of land valued at over Rs 1,924 crore (at 2018-19 prices) were encroached upon by Jan 2018. It also criticised the routine misuse of the Land Acquisition Act's urgency clause, which denied landowners public hearings despite delays that belied urgency. The audit also flagged that GNIDA, created for industrial development, gradually shifted focus to housing and commercial projects, diluting even the Sports City into a housing scheme. The Authority also failed to prepare or submit mandatory annual reports since 1991, denying legislative oversight. Further, GNIDA lacked an internal audit system, enabling unchecked violations of rules and procedures. The Authority admitted the lapse in 2020, saying it had hired a chartered accountants' firm to conduct internal audits. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). NMC Plans To Open Bus Depots For Pvt Operators, Mulls Hourly Parking Charges

1 2 Nagpur: In a move set to reshape city travel, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to allow private buses to operate from its depots located outside the city limits. The decision came after the traffic police barred the halt of such buses on the Inner Ring Road between 8am and 10pm to reduce congestion. Municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari, additional commissioner Vasumana Pant, and deputy commissioners Milind Meshram and Rajesh Bhagat, along with the transport department team, inspected depots at Khapri and Hingna on Wednesday. During the visit, officials dropped Hingna from consideration after finding that bus entry and turning inside the depot was problematic. Instead, attention shifted to Khapri and an alternative site near the New Airport Metro station, where vacant land is available. Officials noted that Khapri depot is adjacent to a police chowky on busy Wardha Road and has around three acres of land making it the largest and most viable option for private operators plying on Wardha Road. Besides this, a land parcel in front of New Airport Metro Station is also there, which is under MahaMetro. However, no representative of MahaMetro was present despite pre-intimation. Civic authorities plan to clear bushes and realign the depot space before finalising the arrangements. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo A follow-up meeting has been scheduled to take a final call on land use, responsibilities of agencies, and operational modalities. Chaudhari also directed the revenue department to explore levying parking charges on private operators on a per-hour basis, a move that could help NMC bridge its annual viability gap funding of over Rs150 crore. "Facilities will not be provided free of cost," officials emphasised. NMC has seven bus depots apart from Mor Bhavan, the main terminus for Aapli Bus services. These include Khapri, Hingna, Wadi, Lakadganj, Wathoda, Patwardhan Ground, and Koradi. Of these, Khapri, Koradi, and Wadi are considered the most feasible for private buses as they are located along national highways and outside city limits, making them more accessible for long-distance passengers. DCP (traffic) Lohit Matani earlier stated that traffic police communicated with NMC, Nagpur Metro Region Development Authority (NMRDA), and Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) to identify designated pick-up and drop-off points for private buses. A traffic police survey highlighted the heavy daily movement of buses across several routes — 642 on Wardha–Yavatmal–Chandrapur, 190 on Amravati–Pune–Nashik, 78 on Koradi–Chhindwara, 296 on Jabalpur–Bhopal–Indore, 92 on Bhandara–Gondia–Chhattisgarh, and 308 on Brahmapuri–Gadchiroli via Umred Road. Authorities have stressed that private bus services should function only from depots outside city limits. Passengers will then be required to use the metro, taxis, autorickshaws, and other local transport to reach these hubs. Currently, NMC operates 470 buses under the Aapli Bus service, including 255 e-buses, 150 midi buses, 45 mini buses, and over 50 standard buses. Daily ridership touched 1.78 lakh, showing steady growth in demand for public transport. Officials believe that opening depots to private operators, while ensuring revenue through parking charges, can help streamline transport and ease congestion within city limits.
