Foundation honors Lake County deputies attacked in deadly ambush
A local foundation honored the Lake County deputies who were ambushed while responding to a service call in Eustis last August.
That ambush claimed the life of Master Deputy Bradley Link. Deputies Harold Howell and Stefano Gargano were severely injured.
Julie Sulpizio is currently in jail awaiting a competency hearing. She is accused of playing a role in the deadly attack by luring the deputies to her home.
Investigators say when deputies responded to a domestic dispute in the neighborhood, Link and another deputy entered the back of a house and were met with gunfire.
Link was fatally shot several times.
Deputies say Sulpizio's husband and two daughters took their own lives after the attack.
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation honored those deputies for their bravery and sacrifice at its post-golf awards dinner in Lady Lake Thursday.
'For all their work, everything the do, we want them to know Tunnel to Towers will never forget and we're here to support them,' said Tunnel to Towers Foundation volunteer director John Manning.

Marion County is offering free meals to students this summer
Marion County Public Schools has announced it will continue its annual tradition of providing free breakfast and lunch to all students 18 and under, without any questions or paperwork required. Students are welcome to visit their nearest serving location and enjoy the delicious food offered by the district's Summer Feeding Program. Twenty-nine schools and 12 off-site/satellite locations will participate in the Ocala and Marion County food program. This summer program, supported by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, encourages sites to offer congregate feeding, which means that all meals are enjoyed on-site. Unfortunately, meals aren't available for takeout, but it's a great opportunity to gather and share a meal together! The program continues through July 28, depending on location. Central Florida is expected to see Saharan dust pass through
Today, millions of Americans in Eastern states will see smoke and haze. It's Saharan dust and tomorrow it'll be here in central Florida. Dust from Africa's Sahara Desert is heading West across the Atlantic Ocean. Channel 9 certified meteorologist Daniel McFarland says it's currently over the Caribbean and will be here by tomorrow. 'Sometimes Africa has different weather that could be kicking up that dust.' It'll be here at least through Sunday, with a potential impact on next week. McFarland notes, 'You'll notice a slight haze, but it'll be pretty faint.' However, the dust that settles on us could cause issues for those with pre-existing respiratory conditions, such as asthma. According to Dr. Gayathri Kapoor with Orlando Health, it can cause symptoms like an itchy or runny nose and coughing. She says those with respiratory issues should plan ahead. 'If you can help it, stay indoors, but if you do need to go out... Carry your medications with you... Maitland woman wants to thank stranger who rescued her, dog from burning home
One of the owners of a Maitland home is looking for the man who helped get her and her dog out of their burning home after an explosion Sunday morning. The fire actually caught two homes on fire. The homeowners just happen to be the restaurant owners of Maxine's On Shine in downtown Orlando. Unfortunately, Maxine says she lost a lot of restaurant memorabilia and other things because her workroom suffered the most damage. Now that the ashes have settled, she wants to find the man who made sure she got out safely. It was a startling start to Maxine Earhart's Sunday morning. 'There was like a bashing like really loud, and my dog started barking, I jumped up, ran down the hallway, put on my bathrobe, and I could hear a man say is anyone in there,' said Earhart. A neighbor shared a video showing big flames and dark smoke between Maxine's house and her neighbors. 'I run outside, and I see 11foot flames and 50 foot billows of black smoke,' said Earhart. Earhart says she could feel the heat from the fire on her face after stepping outside. She noticed it hadn't reached her house yet, so she ran back inside to try to save what she could. 'I ran down my hallway to get a go back, yes I have a go bag cause I'm ready for hurricane season, I've lived in Florida a long time,' said Earhart. Right behind her, the man she never met before who was adamant about making sure she and her dog got out okay. 'He was like right on me, ma'am, you need to get out of the house. And I was like looking him and I remember saying I just one minute, I just need one minute,' said Earhart. In those final moments, he helped her carry out her mom's old jewelry box, then Earhart says he disappeared. Now, she wants to find him and thank him. 'I would tell him, please come to the restaurant, I want to buy you dinner,' said Earhart. Earhart says she's so optimistic because that's her outlook on life. She's happy no one got hurt. She's alive. Her dog's alive. They're planning a dinner to thank the firefighters in the coming days. Everything inside the house will have to be replaced.
