Themed 'Ladies' Night,' the live episode featured contestants singing songs made famous by iconic women in music, with a special guest appearance from country star Miranda Lambert.
Fans across the United States had the power to decide who would stay and who would go, with live voting taking place during the show. Only eight contestants moved on to compete in Monday night's (May 5) Judge's Song Contest, where the Top 7 will be revealed, making every performance count.
Who made it to the Top 8?
After an exciting round of performances and live voting, the following singers advanced to the Top 8:
John Foster
Jamal Roberts
Mattie Pruitt
Breanna Nix
Thunderstorm Artis
Slater Nalley
Gabby Samone
Josh King
Each of these contestants impressed both the judges and viewers at home, earning enough votes to continue their journey toward becoming the next American Idol.
Who was eliminated?
Unfortunately, the night came to an end for two contestants:
Canaan James Hill
Kolbi Jordan
Both singers delivered heartfelt performances but ultimately did not secure enough votes to move forward.
What's next for contestants?
The Top 8 return to the stage on Monday night for the fan-favourite Judge's Song Contest, where each judge picks a song for the contestants to sing, without revealing who chose which one. By the end of the episode, only seven singers will remain in the competition.
As the finale draws closer, the pressure is rising, and every note counts. Although judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan no longer decide who moves forward, they continue to offer feedback and guidance to help viewers make their voting choices.
American Idol airs Sundays and Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC, with next-day streaming available on Hulu.

Meet the Only Indian Actor in Alien: Earth Who Worked at Tea Stall, Sang with Ilaiyaraaja and is Now Making Waves in Hollywood

Adarsh Gourav is the only Indian actor in Alien: Earth, now streaming on Disney+ Hotstar in India (August 13) after its U.S. debut on Hulu and FX (August 12). He plays 'Slightly,' a synthetic child navigating a dark, dystopian future, an emotionally layered role that critics are already praising. The performance marks a major milestone for the Jamshedpur-born actor-singer and places an Indian talent at the heart of the iconic Alien franchise. From Jamshedpur to the Alien universe Born in July 1994, Gourav grew up in Jamshedpur before moving to Mumbai at 13. He studied at Loyola School, Lilavatibai Podar, and Narsee Monjee College. His early life was rooted in music: nine years of Hindustani classical training, tabla lessons, and fronting indie bands like Steepsky and Oak Island. He performed on MTV Indies and recorded songs, jingles, and ads, building a music-first résumé long before mainstream stardom. Here's how he got his start in front of the camera At Ajivasan (Suresh Wadkar's academy), Padma Wadkar mentored Gourav and gave him multiple stage opportunities across Mumbai. During a 2007 Mumbai festival performance of Vande Mataram, he was noticed by Nazali Karamyoi of Raell Padamsee's company Ace, which led to acting auditions. According to The Times of India, in 2010, he made his screen debut in My Name Is Khan, playing the younger version of Shah Rukh Khan's character, a high-profile first role for a teenager. Music roots with Ilaiyaraaja and Sukhwinder Singh Before acting took center stage, Gourav shared platforms with Ilaiyaraaja and Sukhwinder Singh in 2007-08. He continued to record for films and campaigns, keeping his classical base while exploring contemporary styles. Those stage hours and studio sessions inform the vocal control and emotional precision visible in his screen work today. The White Tiger breakthrough and method grit After training at The Drama School Mumbai (on advice to pursue acting seriously), Gourav worked steadily in Mom, Rukh, Madly, Leila, and Die Trying. His breakout came with The White Tiger (2021). As Balram Halwai, he earned BAFTA and Independent Spirit Award nominations. For realism, he worked at a tea stall during prep. Post-White Tiger, Gourav appeared internationally (including Explorations with Meryl Streep and Kit Harington) and at home in Hostel Daze, Guns & Gulaabs, and Kho Gaye Hum Kahan. With Alien: Earth on Disney+ Hotstar in India and Hulu/FX in the U.S., his portrayal of Slightly positions him as one of the most compelling South Asian actors in the global sci-fi genre.

Danielle Spencer, What's Happening!! Star and Veterinarian, Passes Away at 60 After Cancer Battle

Trigger Warning: This article contains references to an individual's death. Danielle Spencer, best known for playing Dee Thomas on the 1970s sitcom What's Happening!!, has passed away at the age of 60. According to family spokesperson Sandra Jones, Spencer died Monday, August 11, 2025, at a Richmond, Virginia hospital after a yearslong battle with cancer. According to ABC News, Spencer became a household name as Dee Thomas, the witty and clever younger sister who often delivered deadpan roasts to her big brother Roger 'Raj' Thomas and his friends Dwayne Nelson and Freddie 'Rerun' Stubbs. Her catchphrase, 'Ooh, I'm gonna tell mama,' became iconic. The show, which aired on ABC from 1976 to 1979, was among the first television series to focus on the lives of Black teenagers in Los Angeles' Watts neighborhood and was inspired by the 1975 film Cooley High. Here's how Danielle Spencer overcame life challenges Born in Trenton, New Jersey, and raised in New York, Spencer started acting at the age of nine. What's Happening!! was her first credited role. Early in the show's first season, the then-12-year-old Spencer was involved in a severe car accident on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California. The crash left her in a three-week coma and killed her stepfather, Tim Pelt. She experienced long-term spinal and neurological problems that required multiple surgeries over the years. Despite her health struggles, Spencer pursued education and a career in veterinary medicine. She attended the University of California, Davis, and UCLA before earning a doctorate in veterinary medicine from Tuskegee University in 1993. Spencer became a veterinarian and an advocate for animal rights, while occasionally returning to acting, including a role as a veterinarian in the 1997 Jack Nicholson film As Good as It Gets. Tributes from co-stars and legacy Haywood Nelson, who played Dwayne on What's Happening!!, paid tribute on Instagram, calling Spencer 'Dr. Dee, our brilliant, loving, positive, pragmatic warrior.' He added, 'We have lost a daughter, sister, family member, 'What's Happening' cast member, veterinarian, animal rights proponent and healer, and cancer heroine. Our Shero. Danielle is loved.' Spencer also appeared in the 1980s reboot, What's Happening Now!!, which ran for three seasons. She survived a bleeding hematoma in 2018, linked to her 1977 car crash, and had been managing mobility issues since at least 2004. In 2014, she underwent a double mastectomy following a breast cancer diagnosis.

Vahbbiz Dorabjee Reacts to Supreme Court Stray Dog Ruling: 'Caging These Voices Is Not a Solution'

TV actress Vahbbiz Dorabjee has strongly criticized the Supreme Court's order to move stray dogs to shelters, calling it an "absolute shock" and "absolute nonsense." She questions the compassion behind the decision and the suitability of existing shelter homes. TV fame Vahbbiz Dorabjee has reacted to the Supreme Court Stray Dog Ruling. In an exclusive chat with Times of India TV, television actress-model Vahbbiz Dorabjee, best known for roles in Pyaar Kii Ye Ek Kahaani, Saraswatichandra, and Bahu Hamari Rajni Kant, shared her reaction to the Supreme Court's newly issued directive on stray dogs. Vahbbiz described the court's order as 'an absolute shock,' adding that the country has more important things to deal with than to leave it all and pass an order on the voiceless — it's nothing but trying to be a bully. She felt strongly that 'caging these voices is not a solution at all.' She stressed that tiny lives don't deserve punishment and instead suggested that adoption campaigns or sterilisation efforts could offer real, humane solutions. 'A punishment like this is not deserved by these babies at all,' she said, her concern clear and heartfelt. Giving more of her view, Vahbbiz called the order 'absolute nonsense,' saying she strongly disagrees with it because she is 'a huge animal lover.' She added, 'Is compassion no longer there in our courts? How could anyone think of such harsh ways to treat innocent souls?' She also questioned the shelter homes named in the directive: 'How many have seen these centres? Do they even exist, and are they good or bad?' Why does this matter now? On August 11, 2025, the Supreme Court directed authorities in Delhi and nearby areas to move all stray dogs to shelters within eight weeks, warning that anyone who tries to stop the process could face legal action. The court said the step was necessary due to rising dog-bite cases and concerns about rabies. However, the decision has faced strong opposition from animal welfare groups, experts, and celebrities, who have called it inhumane and against the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules 2023. These rules focus on sterilisation, vaccination, and allowing stray dogs to live safely in their own communities. In Delhi, protests have taken place in several areas, with activists and dog lovers demanding the order be reconsidered. There are also questions about the shelter facilities themselves, with many wondering if they even exist in good enough condition to house so many animals.
