Rybakina advances to WTA Canadian Open semis
World number 12 Rybakina led 6-1, 2-1 when Kostyuk stopped the match, sending the Kazakhstan star into a semi-final against the winner of a later match between Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro and Canadian teen Victoria Mboko.
The top five seeds and seven of the top 10 seeds were ousted before the quarter-finals at Montreal, opening the door for such upstarts as 18-year-old Mboko, who eliminated top seed Coco Gauff.
Rybakina, seeded ninth, seeks her third WTA title after Rome and Indian Wells in 2023. She has not reached a final since last year at Miami.
Rybakina broke 24th-seeded Kostyuk to open the match and led 2-1 when Kostyuk received medical treatment on her right wrist and forearm.
Kostyuk netted a backhand to surrender another break in the fifth game and Rybakina broke again to claim the first set in 37 minutes when Kostyuk sent a forehand long.
In the second set, Rybakina held twice before Kostyuk retired after 54 minutes due to her wrist issues.

The Carolina Panthers will seemingly give us a better preview of their first-string squads this preseason. Head coach Dave Canales chatted with Kay Adams, host of Up & Adams, from the site of the team's training camp on Friday. Adams, when talking about the growing connection between quarterback Bryce Young and 2025 first-round pick Tetairoa McMillan, asked Canales if we'll get to see the starters during upcoming exhibition play. "Absolutely," he replied. "My plan is to play a series or two with the starters for the first two preseason games. So, I'm excited to get them out there. It goes beyond just the reps in the game. It's the night before, it's the morning of, it's what you eat, it's how you mentally prepare, it's going through your process of body readiness going into the game. Those are valuable reps—as much as going out there actually playing the game. "So, I'm excited to kinda throw that at the guys—especially some of the younger players, the rookies and all that. But certainly our starters, just playing together and feeling what that feels like to prep from the night before all the way going up to it." That was not the case last summer, when Canales opted to hold much of his starters out from the first two preseason outings. The first-year head coach was questioned for that decision, especially after the Panthers were thoroughly thrashed in their regular-season opener against the New Orleans Saints. Canales did roll out the first-team offense in their 2024 preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills. Panthers rookie K Ryan Fitzgerald has rough performance at Fan Fest scrimmage
The Carolina Panthers' kicking battle isn't exactly booming at the moment. Friday night's Fan Fest, held in front of a buzzing Bank of America Stadium crowd, featured the team's first big scrimmage of training camp. The kicking duties for the session belonged to undrafted rookie Ryan Fitzgerald, who got the nod over veteran Matthew Wright. But unfortunately for the 24-year-old youngster, this practice wouldn't be one to remember, at least fondly. Head coach Dave Canales was asked about Fitzgerald's performance afterwards. "Yeah, he missed a couple," Canales told reporters. "So we're just learning about the guys that we have." Fitzgerald successfully converted on just one of his three field goal attempts on the evening. His misses, per Joe Person of The Athletic, came from 48 yards and around 40 yards. Canales was then asked if it was nice to see Fitzgerald work on the regular field goal posts instead of the skinny posts, which have been used in the practices prior. "Yeah, it was good to see him with the whole environment," he replied. "And even right there, that situation was down three [points], to tie it up, to go to overtime. So a little extra added pressure." Fitzgerald kicked at Florida State University for five seasons. He missed on only two of his 34 field goal tries over the past two years.
