hailed the improvement in India's ranking, from having only 11 universities in the QS world university rankings in 2014 to 54 Higher Educational Institutes (HEIs) being included this year.

highlighted it as a "testament to the transformative educational reforms ushered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi."
The Union Minister underlined that India has the "fastest growing education system" among the G20 countries, and the fourth most represented, only behind the United States, the United Kingdom, and China.
"With a record 54 HEIs featuring among the global best, India hits a new high in the QS World University 2026 Rankings. From just 11 universities in 2014 to 54 in the latest rankings, this five-fold jump is a testament to the transformative educational reforms ushered in by the PM Narendra Modi govt. in the last decade. NEP 2020 is not just changing our educational landscape, it is revolutionising it," Pradhan mentioned in a post on X.
According to QS World University Rankings 2026, the Indian Institute of Technology (
IIT
) Delhi has emerged as the country's top-ranked institution, securing the 123rd spot globally -- a jump of 27 places from last year's position of 150.
IIT Bombay and IIT Madras followed at 129th and 180th, respectively. Notably, IIT Madras entered the global top 200 for the first time.
The rankings, released by global higher education analysts QS (Quacquarelli Symonds), cover over 1,500 universities from 106 countries and territories. India is now the fourth most represented country, behind only the United States (192), the United Kingdom (90), and Mainland China (72).

The Telangana Government has sought a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Union Jal Shakti Ministry and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh allowing it to utilise 1,000 tmc ft of Godavari and 500 tmc ft of Krishna water. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has urged Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil to ensure that the Central Government gives its consent for the NOC allowing Telangana to utilise 1,500 tmc ft water as it would suffice to realise the goal of irrigating 1.5 crore acres of land. 'We have no objection if the Centre examines the clearances for projects proposed by Andhra Pradesh after allocating 1,500 tmc ft water from the two rivers,' the Chief Minister told the Union Minister. He termed as inappropriate the Centre's attitude in responding speedily to the projects proposed by the neighbouring State and neglecting Telangana's projects. This would give scope for apprehensions between the two States that could in turn lead to problematic situations, he said, seeking the Union Minister's cooperation in according clearances to Palamuru-Rangareddy, Tummidihatti and Sammakka-Sarakka projects at the earliest. Funds for Musi project The Centre should consider granting funds for the Musi rejuvenation project proposed by the Telangana Government on the lines of similar projects taken up on Ganga and Yamuna rivers. Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, who briefed reporters after the meeting, said that the Jal Shakti Minister responded positively to the State's request. Mr. Patil told the Chief Minister and the Irrigation Minister that the Centre was yet to receive the detailed project report pertaining to the Godavari-Banakacharla project. The Union Minister also assured the State delegation that he would take the initiative in convening the meeting of the Apex Council headed by him and comprising the Chief Ministers of the two Telugu States as members soon.

RBI issues project finance norms for banks, NBFCs
The Reserve Bank on Thursday issued norms to provide a harmonised framework for financing of projects in infrastructure and non-infrastructure sectors by banks, NBFCs and other regulated entities. The Reserve Bank of India (Project Finance) Directions, 2025 lay down the revised regulatory treatment upon change in the 'date of commencement of commercial operations' (DCCO) of such projects in the backdrop of a review of the extant instructions and analysis of the risks inherent in such financing. For the purpose of application of prudential guidelines contained in the latest norms, projects have been broadly divided into three phases -- design phase, construction phase, and operational phase. Live Events "In under-construction projects where the aggregate exposure of the lenders is up to Rs 1,500 crore, no individual lender shall have an exposure which is less than 10 per cent of the aggregate exposure," the RBI said. For projects where aggregate exposure of all lenders is more than Rs 1,500 crore, the exposure floor for an individual lender shall be 5 per cent or Rs 150 crore, whichever is higher. Further, a lender shall ensure that all applicable approvals/clearances for implementing/constructing the project are obtained before financial closure. An indicative list of such pre-requisite approvals/clearances includes environmental clearance, legal clearance, regulatory clearances, as applicable to the project, the RBI said. On resolution of stress, it said a lender shall monitor the performance of the project and any buildup of stress on an ongoing basis and shall be expected to initiate a resolution plan well in advance. "Occurrence of a credit event with any of the lenders during the construction phase, shall trigger a collective resolution in terms of the prudential framework," RBI said and added the reference to 'default' in the prudential framework shall be read as 'credit event' for the purpose of project finance accounts, unless specified otherwise. The RBI also said that a project finance account downgraded to NPA for non-compliance can be upgraded only after the account performs satisfactorily post actual DCCO. It further said a lender may recognise income on accrual basis in respect of project finance exposures which are classified as 'Standard'. For NPAs, income recognition shall be as per extant instructions. The Reserve Bank of India (Project Finance) Directions, 2025 shall come into force with effect from October 1, 2025, the central bank said. In May 2024, the RBI had issued draft guidelines on 'Prudential Framework for Income Recognition, Asset Classification and Provisioning pertaining to Advances - Projects Under Implementation'. As part of the stakeholder consultation exercise, inputs/ feedback were received from around 70 entities, including banks, NBFCs, industry associations, academicians, law firms, individuals and the Central Government, the RBI said. The RBI said the inputs/ feedback received were examined and suitably incorporated while formalising the final directions.
