Man who tricked his way into Wembley for Champions League final may face jail
Steven Carruthers and his four-year-old son mingled with fashion model Naomi Campbell and heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk when they watched the Champions League final from top-tier seats worth £21,800 'at the lowest', prosecutors said.
The 34-year-old, from Hull in East Yorkshire, appeared at Willesden Magistrates' Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to one count of obtaining services dishonestly.
Rachna Gokani, prosecuting, told the court: 'The defendant involved his young son who was four years old at the time in order to assist his illegal entrance into the stadium.
'He was wearing a suit for the specific purpose of looking like he was entitled to these services.'
Ms Gokani added Carruthers went on to 'advertise his offending' in a national newspaper.
She said: 'He went to the Daily Mail and a football-related publication, essentially boasting about gaining entry – something he said he had done previously.
'Mr Carruthers was boasting precisely that he met Naomi Campbell and the heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk and other celebrities.'
Quoting a probation officer who met Carruthers prior to the hearing, Ms Gokani added: 'He had no shame or remorse and was clearly proud of what he had accomplished.'
The court heard Carruthers and his son enjoyed an exclusive hospitality area which regular members of the public were not able to purchase.
Spanish giants Real Madrid defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the match played on June 1 2024.
Ms Gokani said: 'The most expensive hospitality package available on that day was £10,900 per person.
'The hospitality area which Mr Carruthers entered is on a hospitality package which basically exceeds that.
'It's only available for certain VIPs, members of the public cannot purchase it.
'The Daily Mail article and Mr Carruthers himself refer to a cost of about £20,000 for tickets, so he is plainly aware of the levels we are dealing with.'
Ms Gokani said the offending and its subsequent 'advertisement' in the Daily Mail posed security risks for Wembley Stadium, and prompted the Football Association to prosecute Carruthers.
Referring the 2020 Euro final mass disorder incident, when more than 2,000 people stormed their way into Wembley, she said: 'The devastating events of that day are why they (the FA) take offences such as this seriously.
'There are real risks in terms of disorder, health and safety, and the status of the stadium.'
Carruthers, who represented himself in court, apologised after he was told the offence carried a maximum sentence of three years in jail.
He said: 'I'm regretful of what I did, it really does worry me about jail, to be honest.
'I don't really want to ruin my kids' future.'
Lead magistrate Laura Mee told the defendant the case is to be transferred to crown court for sentence as the serious nature of the offence exceeds the magistrates' sentencing powers.
Carruthers told the panel as he left the dock: 'I think it's excessive, I've not hurt anyone.'
He will be sentenced at Harrow Crown Court at a date yet to be fixed.

Mango's New-In Section Is Full Of Soon-To-Be-Viral Picks - This Is What Will Sell Out First
@Grazia/ Anne Lora Scagliusi Mango has always been my go-to on the high street. I do love Zara, but lately I've found myself reaching for Mango more and more. It's become my saviour, whether I need a last-minute office suit or something easy for a holiday, there's always a piece I can take home with me. What keeps me coming back is Mango's aesthetic: sophisticated, modern, powerful, and luxe-looking without the high price tag. These days, I'll even sneak into the changing rooms on my lunch break just to see the latest drops. And right now, the Spanish label is better than ever. I'm especially obsessed with its new co-ords. The colourways are rich, versatile, and perfect for building an autumn wardrobe that feels fresh but timeless. They're the kind of pieces you'll want to wear on repeat. One of the standouts for me is this brown co-ord - it's unbelievably flattering, it fits like a glove, moves comfortably, and still looks really polished. ©Grazia/ Anne Lora Scagliusi 1. Mango Waistcoat with Gold Jewel Buttons I don't usually gravitate towards sleeveless tops; I tend to prefer halter necks or off-shoulder styles that I find more flattering, but I'd happily make an exception for this one. I love that it comes in this rich, luxurious brown that instantly feels expensive. The straight-cut waistcoat features a V-neckline and jewel-effect buttons at the front fastening. The fit is sleek yet comfortable, and it comes with matching trousers, so you can grab it as a ready-to-go co-ord set. 2. Mango Straight-Fit Trouser with Elastic Waist The matching trousers are designed to complement your figure, offering subtle tummy support that keeps everything looking neat and polished. They're elegant yet flexible, making them ideal for both office hours and evening plans. One thing to note for petite frames, like me, the length can run a little long, so a quick tailor or a pair of heels might be all you need to make them perfect. ©Grazia/ Anne Lora Scagliusi Another piece that caught my eye was this ultra-chic green blazer, reminiscent of Kate Middleton's transitional green suit that sold out in a flash. If you're looking to step away from neutrals and add a pop of colour, this set is a winning choice. 3. Mango Green Linen-Blend Suit Jacket The blazer balances structure with ease, the linen-blend satin-finish fabric gives it a subtle luxe sheen, while the slightly oversized fit keeps it modern and wearable. It's versatile enough to work as a fashion-forward office ensemble or a polished outfit for dressier events. 4. Mango Straight-Fit Linen-Blend Suit Trousers The matching straight-leg trousers continue the relaxed yet elegant vibe. Sitting at a comfortable mid-rise, they fall into a straight cut with a slightly relaxed fit. The satin-finish fabric adds a subtle shine, while the front pleat detail keeps the silhouette refined. Worn together, the blazer and trousers create a coordinated, polished set that's perfect for events, weddings, or any occasion where you want to feel confident and put-together. 5. Mango Linen-Blend Top If you're not feeling the blazer, you could opt for Mango's Linen-blend top instead, it offers the same elevated feel in a more understated way, perfect for pairing with the trousers or even your favourite jeans for a chic, effortless look. Lately, I've been rediscovering denim. Monsoon's Tamsin Button Denim Midi Dress recently reminded me that casual fabrics can still feel structured and polished, exactly how I like my dresses. So when I spotted Mango's new-in denim lineup, complete with a fitted jacket, mini skirt, and mid-rise balloon jeans, I knew this was a set we'd soon be seeing everywhere on feeds. Denim might feel like it's fading as we edge into autumn, but honestly, I'd happily extend my season-long wear if it's styled as sharply as this. Each piece elevates the classic fabric: the jacket's clean lines and practical pockets, the mini skirt's flirty, versatile cut, and the balloon jeans' relaxed yet structured silhouette. Together, they make a denim coordinate that's effortless, modern, and impossible not to fall for. Ready to shop the rest of Mango's new-in section (including my new denim faves)? Here are the products that caught my eye while wandering the store and are guaranteed to be instant hits. They're so good that I'm predicting that sizes will run out quickly, so if you like them, be quick. 6. Mango Fitted Denim Jacket The jacket is all about structure done right, fitted just enough to feel tailored, with a crisp shirt collar, long sleeves with buttoned cuffs, and subtle decorative seams that elevate the look. The adjustable side straps let you fine-tune the fit, so it works perfectly over the skirt or jeans, making it a versatile go-to for polished, fuss-free styling. 7. Mango Mid-Rise Balloon Jeans These balloon jeans strike the ideal balance between relaxed and refined. The mid-rise waist and structured silhouette make them flattering, while the five-pocket design keeps them practical. Wear them with the matching jacket for a full coordinated look, or on their own with a crisp shirt or knit for effortless style that doesn't feel overthought. 8. Mango Denim Mini Skirt And then there's the mini skirt, the piece that turns the set into something truly special. Its A-line shape and low-rise waist give a playful lift, while the back zip keeps it neat and polished. Styled with the jacket, it's an instant ready-to-go outfit; paired with sneakers or a chunky knit, it proves this denim set works beautifully solo, too. 9. Mango Burgundy Midi-Dress A dress that should be in your wardrobe this season, this romantic burgundy midi-dress instantly feels elevated yet effortless. The A-line midi design and low neckline are flattering, while the sleeveless cut with wide straps gives it a modern, elegant touch. Decorative seams and a back zip ensure it sits beautifully, and the fully lined fabric adds comfort. Also available in a festive lime green, perfect for injecting some colour into your rotation. 10. Mango Suit Waistcoat with Button If you're on the hunt for a versatile layering piece, this white suit-style waistcoat is it. The straight-cut, open round neckline and wide straps create a sleek silhouette, while the front buttons add subtle polish. Fully lined, it works effortlessly over blazers, with jeans, or paired with matching trousers or skirts for a pulled-together look. 11. Mango Pleated Midi-Skirt With the matching white waistcoat, this pleated midi-skirt is the kind of piece that feels Dior couture. Made from 100% cotton, the A-line silhouette and mid-rise waist flatter the figure, while the side zip ensures a comfortable fit. The pleats add a feminine, elegant movement that elevates any outfit. 12. Mango Draped Neck Printed Dress This Draped Neck Printed Dress feels both playful and sophisticated. The ecru base with abstract brown and burgundy shapes gives it a warm, autumn-ready palette. Draped neckline, short sleeves, and subtle side ruffles bring personality, while the fitted short silhouette makes it perfect for layering or wearing on its own. Concealed back zip and inner lining keep it comfortable and effortless. 13. Zebra-Print Dress With Flared Sleeves The chicest girls on Instagram are rocking zebra print, and Mango is taking charge. This zebra-print dress is bold yet effortless, with a striking black-and-white pattern that instantly makes a statement. The boat neckline and long flared sleeves add a touch of drama while keeping the look elegant, and the A-line silhouette skims the body beautifully without clinging. The short length is perfect for showing off your favourite shoes, and the fully lined design ensures comfort from day to night. Jewish air passengers served meals with ‘Free Palestine' graffiti
Jewish passengers received kosher meals with 'Free Palestine' graffiti on a Spanish airline. The Delegación de Asociaciones Israelitas Argentinas (DAIA), Argentina's umbrella Jewish organisation, said the incident happened on an Iberia flight from Buenos Aires to Madrid on Monday. One passenger, Salvador Auday, received a kosher meal with ' Free Palestine ' daubed on its packaging, while other Jewish passengers received trays with the initials 'FP'. 'I reported the incident to the head flight attendant, who took down the complaint, took photos etc. They tried to apologise in every possible way,' Mr Auday told Vis á Vis, an Argentinian Jewish newspaper. He added that he believed that the words were written by one of the food supplier's employees rather than a member of the aircrew. 'Apparently, it wasn't any of the crew members, so if it came from outside, I'd imagine that Iberia will conduct an internal investigation of its suppliers and procedures. That's precisely why I reported it, so that it doesn't get forgotten,' said Mr Auday. 'Discriminatory act' The DAIA said it condemned ' this discriminatory act ' and had contacted Iberia officials to demand an explanation and action. A spokesman for Iberia said on Wednesday: 'During the flight, some passengers who had ordered kosher food reported that handwritten pro-Palestinian messages appeared on their trays. 'The Iberia crew documented what had happened and got involved to assist those affected. The captain personally approached them to apologise on behalf of the airline. 'Iberia is conducting a thorough investigation, both internally and with the external suppliers responsible for catering, intending to clarify what happened and take all appropriate measures. 'At Iberia, we categorically reject any form of discrimination, incitement to hatred or conduct that violates the dignity of individuals. Such behaviour is unacceptable and contrary to the values of respect and inclusion that are integral to our company's identity.' The Iberia incident comes after a group of Jewish children returning to France from a summer camp in Spain were escorted off a Vueling flight to Paris last month after at least one child sang a Hebrew song. Vueling allegedly removed the director of a Jewish summer camp and approximately 50 children from the flight to Paris, according to footage shared on social media on Wednesday. The airline said the group had 'compromised passenger safety'. The incident prompted Sir Michael Ellis KC, a former attorney general, to say he was 'deeply concerned'. He called for the Civil Aviation Authority to investigate. A spokesperson for Campaign Against Antisemitism said: 'We understand that this was not an isolated incident connected to this supplier, nor is it the first incident over the past fortnight relating to a Spanish carrier. 'Incidents on airlines involving Jewish victims are becoming unacceptably common, with aviation yet another front in the war on the Jews... Jewish passengers deserve to feel safe and respected when flying, just like everybody else.'
