Man who tricked his way into Wembley for Champions League final may face jail
A man who blagged his way into the VIP area of Wembley Stadium to watch the Champions League final with his young son could face jail, a court heard.
Steven Carruthers and his four-year-old son mingled with fashion model Naomi Campbell and heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk when they watched the Champions League final from top-tier seats worth £21,800 'at the lowest', prosecutors said.
The 34-year-old, from Hull in East Yorkshire, appeared at Willesden Magistrates' Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to one count of obtaining services dishonestly.
Rachna Gokani, prosecuting, told the court: 'The defendant involved his young son who was four years old at the time in order to assist his illegal entrance into the stadium.
'He was wearing a suit for the specific purpose of looking like he was entitled to these services.'
Ms Gokani added Carruthers went on to 'advertise his offending' in a national newspaper.
She said: 'He went to the Daily Mail and a football-related publication, essentially boasting about gaining entry – something he said he had done previously.
'Mr Carruthers was boasting precisely that he met Naomi Campbell and the heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk and other celebrities.'
Quoting a probation officer who met Carruthers prior to the hearing, Ms Gokani added: 'He had no shame or remorse and was clearly proud of what he had accomplished.'
The court heard Carruthers and his son enjoyed an exclusive hospitality area which regular members of the public were not able to purchase.
Spanish giants Real Madrid defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the match played on June 1 2024.
Ms Gokani said: 'The most expensive hospitality package available on that day was £10,900 per person.
'The hospitality area which Mr Carruthers entered is on a hospitality package which basically exceeds that.
'It's only available for certain VIPs, members of the public cannot purchase it.
'The Daily Mail article and Mr Carruthers himself refer to a cost of about £20,000 for tickets, so he is plainly aware of the levels we are dealing with.'
Ms Gokani said the offending and its subsequent 'advertisement' in the Daily Mail posed security risks for Wembley Stadium, and prompted the Football Association to prosecute Carruthers.
Referring the 2020 Euro final mass disorder incident, when more than 2,000 people stormed their way into Wembley, she said: 'The devastating events of that day are why they (the FA) take offences such as this seriously.
'There are real risks in terms of disorder, health and safety, and the status of the stadium.'
Carruthers, who represented himself in court, apologised after he was told the offence carried a maximum sentence of three years in jail.
He said: 'I'm regretful of what I did, it really does worry me about jail, to be honest.
'I don't really want to ruin my kids' future.'
Lead magistrate Laura Mee told the defendant the case is to be transferred to crown court for sentence as the serious nature of the offence exceeds the magistrates' sentencing powers.
Carruthers told the panel as he left the dock: 'I think it's excessive, I've not hurt anyone.'
He will be sentenced at Harrow Crown Court at a date yet to be fixed.

Police have tried to track down several people needed for providing witness testimony at Jay Slater's inquest - but several of them failed to turn up to proceedings Tragic Jay Slater 's mates have been tracked down after they seemed to disappear into the wind when the late teen's inquest was opened in May after an urgent witness appeal was launched by police. Missing Jay, 19, was found dead last year following a month-long search in the mountains of Tenerife, having disappeared following a night out on the Spanish territory with several friends on June 17. Lucy Law, Brandon Hargreaves, Brandon Hodgson and two men with whom he stayed at a rented AirBnB the night before he went missing, spoke to local and British media about the teen. But they failed to appear at an inquest into his death launched in late May, which was paused following a desperate plea from Jay's mum to find them. Some of those mates have now been tracked down, with the Daily Mail reporting their last known locations as the inquest prepares to resume. Several of them have been traced to sunkissed overseas destinations not unlike the territory where he went missing last year. Lucy Law Lucy Law was one of two friends who came on holiday with Jay from his native Lancashire last year, and the 18-year-old helped get early search efforts off the ground, assisting the teen's family when they arrived to help. She posted a heartfelt tribute to her late friend when his body was found, writing: "Always the happiest and most smiley person in the room, you was one of a kind Jay and you'll be missed more than you know. "I'm sure you'll 'have your dancing shoes polished and ready' waiting for us all. We all love you buddy. Fly high.' and attended his funeral, but failed to appear at the inquest." She also attended Jay's funeral. She has reportedly returned to Tenerife for a holiday, her stepfather has said. He added that she was also on holiday when she was called to give witness testimony at the inquest earlier this year, with her family unaware it was going on at the time. Bradley Hargreaves Another friend from Lancashire who travelled to Tenerife with Jay, Bradley Hargreaves also regularly spoke with the press after search efforts were launched. When Jay went missing on June 17, Bradley, also known as Bradley Geoghegan, was sent his location, identifying him as being in the small village of Masca. He also posted a tribute when his body was found, saying: "Nothing be the same without you. Rest easy brother. Love you always." He did not appear as a witness at the inquest, having informed the coroner's office he would be abroad on a holiday book last October. He is believed to be in Greece. Brandon Hodgson Brandon Hodgson was the third Lancashire friend to jet to Tenerife alongside Jay, and was one of the last people with whom Jay spoke before going missing. Investigator Mark Williams-Thomas said Brandon, now 20, had received a text from the teen saying: "I've started walking." Brandon added: "He was laughing at first, then he sent me his location. On the phone he said to me 'I've been walking for half an hour', I told him to go back and he said, 'I've already been walking for half an hour, I'm not going back, I don't want to go back, I just want to go home." Brandon is now "liasing with police" after Lancashire Police officers attended his address in the run up to the hearing with a witness summons without answer. Like Jay's other mates, it has been discovered that he is currently on holiday, also abroad but in an undisclosed location. Ayub Qassim Ayub Qassim, a fellow Brit but not a friend from home, had invited Jay back to his rented AirBnB in the Tenerife mountain village of Masca the night before he went missing. The 31-year-old, a convicted drug dealer also known as "Johnny Vegas" had let him stay overnight, and claimed he told Jay he would drive him home after the teen told him "this woman told me I can get a bus every 10 minutes". Mr Qassim told Mark Williams-Thomas: "I told him that he's mad, there's no bus that's coming here every 10 minutes, chill out for a bit and I'll drop you off later on "He said, 'No, no I've got to go to Los Cristianos, I need to scram, I need to chip out'. There's nothing more that I could do. "I saw him walk off maybe down the steps. I maybe shut the door and said if you need me..." The Metropolitan Police had tried to serve him a witness summons at his last known address in Barking, East London, but neighbours informed the service that he was no longer at the address and living abroad. Steven Roccas Steven "Rocky" Roccas was staying with Mr Qassim at the Masca AirBnB, but little more is known about the man beyond this. He kept his head down while Mr Qassim spoke about his last contact with Jay, and his identity was revealed for the first time at the teen's inquest. Met Police officers had tried to serve him a witness summons at his address in London, but found he was no longer residing there before later tracking him to a business via an email address he had provided Spanish police. But the business was shuttered - having reportedly been closed for three years - and Mr Roccas has not been found.

Manchester United have focussed their attentions on signing Hugo Ekitike after conceding defeat in the race for Viktor Gyokeres – but Eintracht Frankfurt's current asking price could prove problematic for the Red Devils. Following a largely underwhelming spell at Paris Saint-Germain, Ekitike has established himself as one of the most in-demand strikers in European football this summer. The sought-after 22-year-old racked up 22 goals and 12 assists in all competitions for Eintracht last season, helping the club secure Champions League football with a third-placed finish in the Bundesliga. However, there has been mounting speculation that Ekitike could be on his way out of the Waldstadion, with the Premier League's elite circling for the Frenchman. It's understood Liverpool and Chelsea have both held talks over a potential move, while Old Trafford has also emerged as a possible destination, with United forced to give up their pursuit of the seemingly Arsenal-bound Gyokeres. 'We don't have to sell Hugo.' Ekitike's current contract, which he signed upon arrival in Frankfurt, runs through to June 2029. 'In terms of Ekitike, I've spoken to Thierry Henry about him a lot,' former Manchester City and England defender Micah Richards said of Ekitike on a recent episode of The Rest is Football. 'He says he's not [necessarily] a frustrating player, but one minute he looks amazing and the next minute he doesn't really do the basics very well. 'But he said if he gets it right and improves then his ceiling could be very, very high.' With Liverpool mulling over a possible a bid for Ekitike, Richards feels the youngster has more than enough talent to add a new dimension to Arne Slot's attack. 'It depends on how they want to play,' Richards explained. 'Do they want a striker who can stretch or they do they want a striker who is going to come to feet and interlink play? 'Ekitike is not bad on the ball but he's more of a stretch striker than a [Roberto] Firmino coming in deep and linking play. 'Where does Florian Wirtz fit into that? Where does Dominik Szoboszlai fit into that? Where does Luis Diaz potentially fit into that. 'If they get Wirtz I think they may be looking for more a player who can drop and Diaz can play a little bit deeper. He played a lot as a No.9 this season. Club World Cup humiliation as FIFA take action to cover up empty stadiums
FIFA are making plans to protect the optics of their Club World Cup with fans being moved around stadiums to ensure cameras don't show waves of empty seats with sales not going as planned FIFA are having to move fans at stadiums so that they face the television camera to ensure matches at the Club World Cup looks as if they're at capacity. The sport's governing body are shifting supporters ahead of the tournament's opening games to avoid potential embarrassment. They maintained that the strategy is standard at major sporting events and will also aid the atmosphere. However the move raises questions over the appetite for FIFA's new tournament, which has been expanded, but is seen as a financially-motivated decision. The Daily Mail reports that fans who bought tickets will not be short changed and movement of seats will see them placed in the same price point or even upgraded in some cases. Ticket prices have been heavily cut and it is understood that many of those who bought seats early have been given substantial part-refunds to allow for this. The Club World Cup in its new format is yet to be trialed but a seat map for a last 16 match at the 74,867-capacity Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte is effectively split in half. One section is almost filled but the other is virtually empty, but that won't be shown by the camera. For the opening game between Lionel Messi 's Inter Miami and Egypt's Al-Ahly at Miami's 65,326 Hard Rock Stadium, which ended goalless, students at a local college were being offered five tickets for as little as $20 (£14.70). When the draw was first made in December the cheapest seats were advertised for $349 (£257). FIFA, who signed a $1bn deal with DAZN to broadcast the competition across the world, need their newly expanded tournament to be a success. It previously included seven teams and last a week - now there are 32 teams and it will be played over a month. This week alone, Spanish La Liga president Javier Tebas described the Club World Cup as "absurd" and said FIFA had not "consulted us about anything" as players continue to express concern over the amount of games they're required to play. Tickets for the tournament have been sold using a dynamic pricing model and the prices are determined by demand. A lower price suggests less interest, potentially because of the teams available. There are still tickets available for every match, with the majority of fixtures having seats for as little as £45 - and some even as low as £25.
