Arne Slot feels no ‘bad intention' in Crystal Palace fan noise during Diogo Jota tribute

ITV News7 days ago
Liverpool FC head coach Arne Slot has said he feels no 'bad intention' in the interruption of a minute's silence during a tribute to Diogo Jota.
Liverpool forward Jota died in a car crash along with his brother Andrew Silva in Spain in July. The pair were honoured with wreaths laid on the pitch and a minute's silence.
The moment was interrupted by a minority of fans from the Palace end, creating a strong response from both the home end and other Eagles supporters who tried to silence them.
About the incident, Reds boss Arne Slot said: 'I don't think this was planned, or this was the idea of the fan that made some noise. Maybe he wasn't aware of the fact that it was the minute of silence.
'He was just still happy and tried to cheer for his team. And I think then the fans of Palace were trying to calm that person or those persons down, so I don't think he had a bad intention, the guy or people that made noise.
'I don't think there's a bad intention to it, because the fans of Crystal Palace and everywhere around the world have paid huge respect to Diogo and Andre and this was, I think, unlucky.'
Liverpool fans paid their respects with a rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' as the wreaths were brought out. They also raised a white banner reading 'Diogo J' that featured the forward's image and number 20.
Liverpool great Ian Rush, Palace chairman Steve Parish and Football Association chair Debbie Hewitt laid the wreaths in the Liverpool end.
Fans from both clubs expressed their respect with a standing ovation as the late siblings' images were displayed on the big screens inside the stadium.
But the minute's silence at Wembley had to be cut short due to some shouting from a small number of Crystal Palace fans.

Arsenal transfer news: Crystal Palace boss gives Eberechi Eze update as Gunners eye Barcelona swoop

Mikel Arteta and his Arsenal players are celebrating a winning start to the Premier League season but the final two weeks of the transfer window could bring fresh developments Arsenal made a winning start to their Premier League season on Sunday but there are still some questions left unanswered. Riccardo Calafiori's close-range effort made the difference against Manchester United, but Mikel Arteta's side weren't at their best in every area. ‌ New big-money signing Viktor Gyokeres was unconvincing on his first start in England's top flight, managing just an hour before making way for Kai Havertz. It may well be that Arteta decides the Swede needs more support before deadline day. ‌ Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze is one of those who has been linked all summer long, though Tottenham appear in pole position with Arsenal cooling their interest Whether Eze's impressive performance for Palace at Chelsea on Sunday could change things remains to be seen. ‌ Gyokeres wasn't the only new signing involved for Arsenal at Old Trafford, with Gyokeres joined by Martin Zubimendi in the starting XI and Noni Madueke coming off the bench. Kepa Arrizabalaga and Cristhian Mosquera were unused substitutes, while Christian Norgaard missed out with a minor injury. Arsenal have two weeks left to make any final additions to their squad for the first half of the season. Here, Mirror Football looks at how things are shaping up. Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has issued an update on Eberechi Eze's short-term future. The England star got more than 80 minutes on Sunday despite links with Arsenal and Tottenham during the window, and is expected to be available for Palace's Conference League play-off on Tursday. "The 15, 16 players who had the most minutes last year are still here," Glasner told Sky Sports after his team earned a goalless draw at Chelsea. "There are a lot of rumours about Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi but they were 100 per cent with this group in Crystal Palace and they have proved that in a big way. "Eb should have scored a goal today, he had one and it was disallowed. He will come tomorrow to the Crystal Palace training ground, Tuesday off, we take Wednesday and I expect him to be back playing for us against Fredrikstad." ‌ Arsenal's De Jong links Reports in Spain suggest Arsenal could be in the running to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona. The move would likely not be until next summer, when the Dutch international's deal in Catalunya expires. Manchester United have long been linked with a swoop for De Jong, predominantly when his former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag was at the helm. With United dropping down the league and appointing Ruben Amorim, though, that chat has gone cold. ‌ We'd still probably take the Arsenal links with a pinch of salt. De Jong hasn't expressed any desire to leave his current club, even if the much-publicised financial situation affecting Barca could force them to make tweaks to their squad in 2026. Zinchenko breakthrough Arsenal utility man Oleksandr Zinchenko is set for Fenerbahce, according to reports in Turkey. The Ukraine international is expected to move on an initial loan with an option to buy, with the package worth a reported £11m. ‌ The 28-year-old has featured for Arsenal in pre-season but wasn't in the matchday squad on Sunday. The arrival of Calafiori and the emergence of Myles Lewis-Skelly saw his opportunities limited last term, though he did get some game time in midfield. ZInchenko's current Arsenal deal expires in 2026. It is unclear whether the Gunners would urge him to sign an extension before agreeing to a loan exit, having reportedly explored a permanent sale earlier this summer.

Chelsea reject European giants loan offer for out-of-favour star - as Blues insist on permanent move to fund for attacker

Chelsea have rebuffed Bayern Munich 's attempt to sign forward Christopher Nkunku on loan. Chelsea and the player would prefer a permanent move and talks are ongoing. The Blues want to offload Nkunku, Nicolas Jackson, Carney Chukwuemeka and Ben Chilwell among others before bringing in a wide player and an attacking midfielder. Manchester United 's Alejandro Garnacho, Xavi Simons of RB Leipzig and Manchester City 's Savinho, who is a target for Tottenham, have been discussed to varying degrees. The London club made an underwhelming start to the Premier League season as Crystal Palace ground out a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. After a truncated pre-season following victory in the Club World Cup, everything pointed to a Chelsea side lacking both preparation and rest as Oliver Glasner 's team coped relative easily with a new-look yet disjointed attack. Eberechi Eze started for Palace despite speculation he is about to leave and, if there were doubts about how supporters felt about the player whose goal won them the FA Cup in May, they were dispelled when he was substituted to a standing ovation late on. The England international provided the game with its only major talking point, lashing in a brilliant free-kick in the first half that was ruled out after Marc Guehi obstructed Chelsea's wall, drawing a furious response from Palace fans. As expected, Nicolas Jackson was not in Enzo Maresca's squad after being made surplus to requirements, with Newcastle considering a bid, while Joao Pedro was preferred at number nine to fellow new signing Liam Delap. Chelsea were playing 35 days after their win over Paris St Germain in the Club World Cup final in the United States and showed signs of mental fatigue in a first-half display low on creativity.

Marc Guehi snubs Oliver Glasner to throw Crystal Palace future into more doubt

Liverpool target Marc Guéhi appeared to ignore a greeting from his Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner after the goalless draw at Chelsea. Guéhi seemingly snubbed Glasner's call for a handshake on the pitch as he instead walked head down towards the Stamford Bridge tunnel. Roy Keane said later that Glasner only had himself to blame, however. During Sky Sports' coverage, Keane attacked the trend of managers wanting to shake hands with their players on the pitch, describing it as 'the new garlic bread'. 🗣️ "It's like the new garlic bread" Roy Keane's thoughts on that Oliver Glasner and Marc Guehi interaction at full-time of Chelsea vs Crystal Palace... — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) August 17, 2025 The incident went unexplained by Palace on Sunday night although Jean-Philippe Mateta appeared to discuss the incident with Glasner as they walked off. Telegraph Sport reported last week how Liverpool are in talks with Palace over a deal for Guehi. The club have indicated they want to sell this summer rather than lose their captain for free when his contract expires but the clubs have so far been apart on their valuation. An agreement could be reached between the clubs for around £35m for a player who will hope to be part of Thomas Tuchel's England squad at the 2026 World Cup. Keane said Guehi was within his rights to not want to talk to Glasner in full gaze of the fans and TV cameras. He said the incident underlines why managers should go back to a quick handshake with their counterpart before leaving the field. He added: 'Where does this all happen over the last year or two, where managers come on the pitch and shake hands with everybody, the opposition players? When you're playing... you've just had a tough match. He's [Guehi] physically exhausted. He's walking up – the manager's probably coming for a little chit-chat, knowing that there's, there's talk about him leaving. 'As a player, you don't want to get involved in that as well. I've had managers come up after a game. You go, 'let's get down the tunnel, we'll do it inside'. This idea of managers all wanting to do something on the pitch – that's come in the last few years... It's like the new garlic bread. Just get down the tunnel. It's just a league match.' However, both Guehi and team-mate Eberechi Eze remain 'aligned with Palace' amid rising transfer speculation, Glasner insisted on Sunday night. 'Ebs and Marc, there has been a lot of noise about these two players in the last week. Everyone could see the performances against Liverpool and today they were 100 per cent aligned with this team and Crystal Palace,' Glasner told BBC Match of the Day. 'As long as they are 100 per cent committed, they will play as they are so good. I watched them all week in training, I spoke to them almost daily, maybe more than my kids and wife, but it's been worth it to talk to them. They didn't just show they are great footballers, but they are great people and that's what I expected.'
