Mavericks' D'Angelo Russell speaks on impact of Nets organization
"It's crazy. Obviously, the city's one thing, but the organization of Brooklyn is different. It's unlike any other. the performance team, coach, everything about Brooklyn is different than you would expect," Russell said when discussing what playing in Brooklyn is like. Russell, the host of "The Backyard" podcast collaborated with Dwyane Wade, the host of "The Time Out" podcast, as part of Fanatics Fest.
"I've been around a league where I came from the Lakers where the structure is not the same," Russell continued. "Then, I go to Brooklyn where it's all structure and it taught me how to be a professional. I always approached the game to where I just was kind of nonchalant and I felt like I could just wing it. When I got to Brooklyn, it taught me how to be a professional."
Russell, 29, spent the first two years of his career with the Lakers after being selected with the second overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft out of Ohio State. Russell's first stint with the Nets began with the 2017-18 season after Los Angeles traded him to Brooklyn in the offseason. Russell went on to be one of the main reasons for the Nets' turnaround during that time and he even made his first and only All-Star appearance during the 2018-19 season.
Russell's second stint in Brooklyn happened during the 2024-25 season in which his acquisition from the Lakers was regarded as the Nets trying to get draft capital and/or young players in exchange for taking on players with fairly-high salaries like Russell. Despite how much he talked about wanting to stay in Brooklyn, Russell signed with the Mavericks earlier this summer as it looks like he will have more of a chance to play while Kyrie Irving is rehabbing his knee injury.

NFL Analyst Defends Disgruntled Cowboys Star in Fiery Rant
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Once again, the Dallas Cowboys find themselves caught up in off-field drama regarding the contract situation of a key player. As things continue to unravel, one analyst sounded off on Jerry Jones for how he's conducted business thus far. Earlier this year, Micah Parsons and Jones reportedly had talks about an extension for the All-Pro linebacker. Despite things almost being worked out at one point, it's slowly evolved into a worst-case scenario for the Cowboys. The front office has had little to no talks with Parsons' agent, resulting in a growing frustration that led to a stunning trade request last week. Although the Cowboys have no plans of moving on from the homegrown star, the end of this saga appears to be nowhere in sight. He went on a fiery rant about Jones, bashing him for trying to get things done without involving the necessary parties. "You can't say I came to a handshake agreement with a non-negotiating party," Wright said. "Micah is not the negotiating party for Micah Parsons. Jerry is the negotiating party for the Cowboys. It's not his business. It is outrageous to me for Jerry to spring on Micah a contract discussion. They get to wherever it seems okay, and then be like it's done we negotiated. He knows better than that." 'You can't say 'I came to a handshake agreement' with a non-negotiating party. That said, things with Parsons continue to move towards a point of no return. Earlier this week, it was reported that Parsons and the Cowboys' owner haven't spoken since he voiced his trade request. Since Micah Parsons issued his trade request, he has not spoken to Jerry Jones. — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) August 5, 2025 Despite how things look at the moment, Jones doesn't seem to be worried about Parsons' future in Dallas. When recently talking about the defensive star, he had nothing but good things to say about him while hinting at him still being part of the Cowboys' future. "I think the world of Micah," Jones said after Tuesday's practice, via The Athletic. "He's one of the brightest people I've ever been around. He's very, very talented. Now, how we ultimately meld him in with our future is a challenge. I'm built for it and he's built for it." With the start of the regular season less than a month away, the Cowboys are running out of time to put this situation behind them before the 2025 campaign gets underway. Nets' Egor Dёmin pointed to the draft for inspiration behind jersey number choice
After wearing No. 3 as a freshman in college, rookie guard Egor Dёmin will begin his career in the NBA with the Brooklyn Nets with a new look on the court. Before becoming the first five-star recruit to commit to BYU, Dёmin donned No. 9 with Real Madrid and No. 3 with Russia in the 2021 FIBA U16 European Challengers. With both numbers open on the Nets, Dёmin opted to go with No. 8. The 19-year-old hasn't had the opportunity to wear it throughout his basketball journey up until this point, despite it being one of his favorite numbers. In a video posted by the Nets on X, Dёmin appears to be excited to finally be able to wear it. My draft pick, I would say, is the biggest part of it. I also just really like No. 8; I always liked it. I never really had the chance to take it because I was always playing for No. 3, and it is my number all of the time. Then I played for nine because I couldn't get three, so I took three times three is nine. Then I got back to three in college. I just also think it is pretty good, and then it is infinity. Dёmin was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team last season, averaging 10.6 points, 5.5 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.2 steals on 41.2% shooting from the field. He dazzled as a playmaker, ranking third in the conference in assists after setting the freshman program record (180). The 6-foot-9 Russian debuted in the NBA Summer League, averaging 11.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists and one steal on 43.5% shooting from 3-point range in three appearances. He finished in double figures twice, including a 14-point, five-rebound performance on July 16. Dёmin is among a crowded draft class for the Nets, joining Nolan Traoré (19th pick), Drake Powell (22nd pick), Ben Saraf (26th pick) and Danny Wolf (27th pick). The Nets became the first team in history to select five players in the first round of the draft. Note: Throughout August, Rookie Wire is looking at every first-round pick and why each player selected their respective jersey number as they make the jump to the NBA. Nets projected to take G Dylan Mingo third overall in 2027 NBA Draft
The Brooklyn Nets are still in the early stages of their latest rebuild and they are hoping that one of their five picks in the 2025 NBA Draft will hit. Brooklyn general manager Sean Marks most likely has his eyes set on the 2026 NBA Draft, but if the Nets' rebuild doesn't get them their franchise player in that class, they could look towards the 2027 class. Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman recently put out his mock for the 2027 NBA Draft, a class that will mostly consist of players heading into their senior year of high school. Most of the attention related to the draft will be on AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, and Cameron Boozer, three players expected to be the top of the 2026 class. However, Brooklyn could potentially select another guard of the future in 2027 in Dylan Mingo. "The NBPA Top 100 Camp MVP, Dylan Mingo has been on a gradual, upward trajectory," Wasserman wrote when discussing who the Nets could take with the third overall pick in the 2027 Draft. "And with his outstanding positional, unteachable driving/scoring talent and defensive tools, improving correctable skills like shooting could unlock top-five type of upside in 2027." According to ESPN, Mingo has a 94 scout grade and is considered to be the eighth-best player in his class as described by being ranked eighth in ESPN's top-100. With the 2027 class still two years away from being drafted into the NBA, it will be interesting how the class will change between now and when that draft finally comes around. Mingo could be the right choice for the Nets depending on how players like Egor Demin play in the next two seasons. One interesting tidbit about Brooklyn's 2027 first-round pick is that the Houston Rockets have swap rights so there is a possibility that the Nets would try to avoid giving the Rockets a premium pick. If Houston is still a good team by 2027, they will only be able to add another impact young player to their roster while Brooklyn would be stuck with a player that isn't expected to be as valuable. That's something for Marks to consider along the way.
