Games Inbox: Is there going to be a PS5 State of Play this summer?

The Thursday letters page worries what will happen if the new Marvel games are flops, as one reader laments the slow death of physical games.

Summer schedule
I really hope that Sony is planning to make more first party games but I have a feeling there's no going back to how things were. It's been too long and too much has changed, including Sony still selling tons of PlayStation 5s even without any proper exclusives and Xbox going multiformat.
I think it's reasonable to hope they will do more though. We can't stop them making any more live service games but they do seem to at least be slowing down a bit. The problem is that slowing up doesn't mean they'll speed up with single-player games instead. They could just end up making less overall, like they have over the last few years.
We've got Ghost Of Yōtei this year, which I'm not super excited about (I'd had enough of the last one by halfway through) but I am very interested in seeing Returnal follow-up Saros next year, so hopefully things are slowly turning around.
I want to be optimistic, but the problem is there's no sign of Sony having a not-E3 State of Play showcase this summer. The past two years they've had it at the end of May and I think we've probably gone past the point they were going to announce it if it was happening. I hope I'm wrong, or maybe it's later in June for some reason, but it doesn't look good.

Your story is another castle
I see the Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel has had its name leaked as Super Mario World. I'm not sure your average Joe is going to get that reference, but would they actually bother doing an adaptation of the game's story? Does the game even have a story? I've beaten it twice and I honestly can't remember.
Looking at Wikipedia, apparently it was all in the manual and basically Bowser kidnapped Peach and some dinosaur eggs. There's so little to work with I really have no idea what direction any of these films could do to justify themselves as anything other than a cash-in. The Paper Mario games are the only ones with an actual plot, but even then that's not what's good about them.

Risky business
I've got a bad feeling about these upcoming Marvel games. I imagine Wolverine will be fine, but that Iron Man game will be almost two decades too late by the time it comes out. And I can't believe many people are interested in a Captain America and Black Panther team-up set in World War 2.
Normally I'd just shrug my shoulders and write it off as an incoming flop but nowadays that means the whole studio could go down and how many hundreds of people are working on these two games?
I'm not exaggerating either. Consider what happened to Firaxis after the (excellent) Midnight Suns flopped. All the lead developers left, the studio was fractured (I don't think it was a coincidence that Civilization 7 was a rare dud), and now we'll never get an XCOM 3.
I don't know these developers behind Iron Man and the other one as well, but I do know that lots of jobs are now in danger, just because EA was late jumping on a bandwagon.

Reliable reputation
Glad to hear GC got Power Stone back and I like the sound of all the effort Capcom put into the collection and the reasonable price. I've never really been into fighting games, so it's not really of interest to me. But it Does make me think better of Capcom, for when something else I am interested in comes up.
I wish this was something other publishers thought of, especially as Capcom is doing so well, financially speaking, at the moment. But unfortunately EA and Activision, and even Ubisoft to a degree, just rely on their big franchises and don't really put out much else anyway.
Sony is another example of doing this well, because their reputation for first party games really wasn't that great until the PlayStation 4. They just built it up and became someone to rely on. Them throwing that all away now is so strange.

Money issue
I've been thinking for a while now about this, but Sony could take Xbox out the console market with just one sentence. You can put Game Pass on PlayStation. There wouldn't be any need for an Xbox and we know Phil wants it on there.
Why Sony won't do that I'll never know. It's a win/win for Sony. You never know, Sony might allow them sooner or later and Xbox can go the way of Sega, just with a hell of a lot more money and just to make games.
David
GC: They won't do it because they make more money selling games on their store. Although they may change their mind in time, because they've begun to make more selling microtransactions than actual games.
And another thing
You know, I have been witnessing quite a bit of clamour over the last few days. More or less a lot of complaining and quite a stir of negativity. I've seen GTA 6 fall surprisingly prey to this. Either people have issues with the inevitably violent content, the sex or the aged fable of controversy. My take is my bond and I say that I gladly welcome the gratuitous violence, the sex, and the glory glitz of Leonida.
Because I've waited over 12 years for an evolution and no echoes of bemusement will deter me from my course of securing the collector's edition as soon as possible. If that includes a statue or early access I will be immensely satisfied.
My second point is the Nintendo Switch 2. I've already mentioned that I secured the Mario Kart World bundle from Amazon and I acknowledge the bricking controversy. But modding isn't my cup of tea, so Nintendo has nothing to worry about. I'd rather emulate PlayStation 2 games anyway.
Thirdly, the PlayStation 6. It matters not the price, storage, exclusives or specs. I'm buying this system, as I did the PlayStation 5. Day one. If it arrives in 2027, the merrier it is for me. I will very much take great stride in playing Horizon Zero Dawn 3 and many other titles.

Mum's the word
I was wondering when we might get some concrete thoughts about the Switch 2 launch games?
Is there an embargo about when Switch 2 games are able to be reviewed? Or perhaps there is an embargo on when you can talk about an embargo, nothing from Nintendo would surprise me.
Mark
GC: There's always an embargo on when we can talk about an embargo, but especially when it involves Nintendo.
Facing defeat
I know the war was lost long ago (shops stopping second-hand games was the end, as far as I see it) but it is so tragic to see how small a part of gaming physical copies are now. I don't know anyone, amongst my friends or family, that buys physical copies anymore and what would be the point anyway, when they're not even stored on the disc?.
Perhaps it was inevitable, since even if the initial game is on the disc it gets distorted and expanded by updates the second you put it in a console but it's the fact that there's literally no benefit to digital. People talk about convenience but what convenience? Not having to change discs is just silly and lazy.
And it takes time to buy a physical copy? I could drive to the shops and back quicker that it takes me to download a modern game. Not that I'm in the habit of paying out £60 on a whim, that I suddenly decide I have to have a new game right then and there.
Gaming got infinitely more expensive as soon as it became more difficult to sell on your games, especially with eBay's new payment rules. But apparently nobody cares. Maybe everyone else is a millionaire all of a sudden, and I didn't get the memo, but the death of physical is just handing more control to publishers and taking more cash out of the wallets of ordinary people.

Inbox also-ransJust watched the Borderlands movie on Amazon. It's no Fallout or The Last Of Us but it's not that bad. I particularly liked Jack Black as the annoying android Claptrap. They should make a Brütal Legend movie – it would have a great soundtrack. Think I will check out the Like A Dragon movie next.

Thanks for the heads-up on Very, I managed to get my bundle with a camera so I'm very excited now. I went back and checked and it's still live though, which seems weird given no one else has any stock at all.

Sacha Baron Cohen doesn't realise his midlife post-divorce body is repellent to most women

'From Borat to buff,' the caption reads on the cover of Men's Fitness, along with a topless shot of… wait, that can't be Sacha Baron Cohen, can it? My first thought was oily biltong. My second thought was one of those comedy cooking aprons featuring a male torso. My third thought was: ooh, hench, what do you bench? No, of course it wasn't. It was this: I get the 53-year-old actor and comedy writer is now officially divorced from his wife, Isla Fisher, 49, but I'm not sure the revenge body thing is really working. Back in the day (1994, to be precise), Diana, Princess of Wales, stole the show with a daring off-the-shoulder black dress to signal her couldn't-care-less-but-actually-care-a-lot insouciance. I can't see why a Celine Homme polo shirt and Tom Ford linens wouldn't have done the trick for Baron Cohen. He's a dad with two daughters and a son, and therefore absolutely entitled – some would say obliged – to rock a dad bod. What his Australian ex-wife makes of it all is anyone's guess. The couple met at a party in 2001 and were engaged in 2004. The Wedding Crashers actress converted to Judaism to marry Baron Cohen in 2010. Although they announced their separation in 2024, they said it had happened a year previously. Both have been at pains to keep their personal lives private. But now that the privately educated Cambridge graduate has joined the Hollywood elite, he happily admits he brought in a crack team for his ripped glow-up, which he describes as 'a midlife crisis'. Plus, he has been cast as Marvel's supervillain devil Mephisto, who makes evil pacts with mortals in order to acquire their souls, which concentrated his mind. 'Some celebs use Ozempic, some use private chefs, some use personal trainers. I did all three,' he told the magazine. 'This is not AI, I really am egotistical enough to do this.' Given he was put through his daily workouts by someone called @theangrytrainer, his dedication, appropriately enough, verged on the demonic. It's a far cry from his wannabe gangsta Ali G character back in the 1990s, which led to his film about his shockingly inappropriate Kazakh journalist, Borat, in 2006, and then his mockumentary about monstrous Austrian fashionista Brüno three years later. In 2012, he played Admiral General Aladeen in The Dictator, billed as 'the heroic story of a dictator who risked his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed'. Now a bona fide A-lister, Baron Cohen has clearly fallen prey to the literal arms race dominating the big franchises, which has seen male actors (and their body doubles) push their physiques into superhero proportions. Having presumably forgotten that superheroes aren't real. These days, muscle mass equals star power. On screen, at any rate. In Men's Fitness, Baron Cohen has found the perfect body-conscious audience for his great reveal, but I'm not sure how many women will find his pumped-up pecs a thing of beauty. It's great for any midlifers to have a stimulating hobby, and there's something deeply attractive about a man pursuing a passion. But there's something troubling when that passion turns out to be sculpting himself in the image of a cartoon character.

Games Inbox: Are gamers too entitled about video games?

The Friday letters page tries to figure out Nintendo's future plans for Mario Kart World, as one reader wishes Battlefield 6 didn't have a story mode. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@ Value for money I had a good laugh at the story about the fan trying to get a refund after playing a game for 35,000 hours but I think there's a serious point to be made here, in that it shows just how entitled most gamers are. We've seen on these pages the total lack of empathy from some people, towards the developers that make their game, but there's also this strange insistence that once you buy a game the publisher is honour bound to change it in any way you demand and make sure it works online for all eternity. There is absolutely no other product in the world that is treated this way, especially not at that price level. I'm not defending publishers for stopping support of a game early but there's got to be a sensible limit here. A video game is less than £100, often half that, and you're looking for lifetime support and instant changes? If this guy paid £40 for a video game four years ago, and he's put 35,000 hours into, I'd say he's had his money's worth. Coolsbane Split opinion I just finished Split Fiction with my girlfriend and we really enjoyed it. That developer is really good at these co-op games and I'm now automatically interested in anything else they do. But is it just me but is the story and characters kind of bad? Making writers your main characters is always a danger, just ask Alan Wake, but these two weirdos seem to have invented the least original fantasy and sci-fi worlds imaginable. The dialogue is also pretty bad. Not funny bad or anything, just really boring and obvious. Maybe it's meant to be that way on purpose, so as to not put off casual gamers, but it's so bland it really feels like a trick has been missed. Even the bad guy is terrible, and his plan is so obvious and also stupid. It Takes Two wasn't really much better either, it was just the game that was good. I hope they do better for next time. Firegon Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. Unwanted story I get the negativity around Battlefield 6 but I am looking forward to the game and I think that it probably will be good, despite EA. I'm a bit worried about how they're going to handle classes, but other than that I like what I'm hearing and seeing (given the amount of footage that has leaked). The other reader was right that it's not a complicated game, but you wouldn't have thought that given how many times it's been messed up over the years. The only thing that really worries me about this game is that they're once again wasting time on a story campaign. Stop it! They've never been good, nobody cares whether they exist or not, and you're just wasting time and money on something that could be used for more important stuff. Other than that though, I'll give it a chance. Bosley Email your comments to: gamecentral@ Link to the photorealism Personally, I'm optimistic about the live action Zelda movie. Not for the film itself but a realistic portrayal of Link, if received well, could pave the way for a realistic looking game. Don't get me wrong I've loved the recent Zelda games, and The Wind Waker is one of my all-time favourite games ever, but Ocarina Of Time, at the time, just felt so groundbreaking. The game sure, but the graphics were for the time the best around. I understand why Nintendo have gone the path they chose but I long for that Link from the Space World demo. And yes, I know we subsequently got that with Twilight Princess but it's not aged well and wasn't really cutting edge at the time. Imagine a Zelda game that looks like the Demon's Souls remake, looking up and a dragon flying over the volcano in that style. With a more story driven game, where the Zelda and Link interact like Ellie and Joel. The swordplay could be exactly the same and I'll leave it to Nintendo to find that gameplay hook they do so well. Or at least an Ocarina Of Time remake will do, just give us one more realistic 4K Link, please. Phil No reason I am actually glad to hear that people are not buying Mario Kart World separately on digital. If you want a physical copy then fine but I can't see one single reason why you'd buy a Switch 2 and then, days or weeks later, buy Mario Kart digitally. You'd have to either hate Mario Kart and then suddenly come round to it (after playing it on someone else's Switch 2?) or… not know it was out and then act shocked when you find out? To be honest, I'm surprised it was even the third most popular game on the eShop, because every single person that bought it really needs to think about their money saving skills. Renton It's the children who are wrong People are right to question exactly how much the PlayStation 6 is going to cost, if it's both a portable and a home console. A PS5 Pro and a PlayStation Portal is already £900 and I don't see any chance that the PlayStation 6 combo is going to be any cheaper. I really don't see how there's that many people that're going to be interested in throwing down that sort of money for a console whose graphics are barely going to look any better and probably won't have many exclusives. At the very least a Switch style hybrid approach seems a better idea, but none of the rumours seem to say that at all. Either I'm completely out of the loop or Sony are getting high on their own fumes. I just cannot imagine any situation where they suddenly announce the PlayStation 6 and everyone goes crazy for it and starts pre-ordering. What games are they going to use to promote it? How are they going to do or look anything different to the PlayStation 5? Maybe I'm missing something. Maybe Sony has a secret plan that's definitely going to work but I don't see it at all. To be honest I'm kind of worried about the future of gaming right now. Mapes Gonna take you for a ride Bargain alert: Marvel Vs. Capcom Fighting Collection for PlayStation 4 is on sale for £23.80 (usual price £44.99) on Amazon for a limited time. The Switch version is on sale too but it is a digital code in a box. Andrew J. PS: The people who made the Rubber Keyed Wonder documentary about the Spectrum and the documentary about the PlayStation, called the PlayStation Revolution, are now making an expanded Blu-ray of the ZX Spectrum computer, covering various topics about the Spectrum including its games, the hardware design, and peripherals. It's on sale for £25 plus postage for the next seven days. Wider World Everything tells me that Mario Kart World is definitely going to be treated like a live service game, that's constantly updated with characters from upcoming games. I'd almost bet on it, except I can't think of any reason why Nintendo hasn't already told us about it. It seems so obvious that something is going on with Donkey Kong, but it's been out for a week now so why haven't they announced it? Maybe it'll be at the rumoured Nintendo Direct this month but why did it have to wait till then? I don't get it. But if it does happen, it could explain everything. It would explain all the missing characters that were in Mario Kart 8 (maybe we're getting a new game with the Koopalings!) and it would be a way to slowly introduce characters from other franchises. You could use Hyrule Warriors to add Zelda characters, Kirby Air Riders to add Kirby, and Metroid Prime 4 to add Samus, ideally with custom cars. I don't know if they'd do that many at once, maybe they'd want to wait until mainline entries, but they could just add extra costumes and cars for that. Whether they'd go as far as adding new areas of the map I don't know but if they don't I'm not sure how else bigger DLC is going to work. The ones on Mario Kart 8 did great, so they're going to want to copy that, but are they going to start plugging in new areas on the map, like a jigsaw? Or maybe this is all just too much of a good idea and they're going to do nothing. With Nintendo you just never know. Occo Inbox also-rans As usual with Nintendo I can't tell if they're being purposefully evil in cheaping out over the Switch 2 version of Mario Party or if they just didn't see how it would come across. Either way I'm definitely not getting it, if it's so half-assed. Lurch That Lego Game Boy is amazing. I imagine it'd be really easy to make it actually work too. The innards of a Game Boy must be something you could make a system on a chip for that's the size of a pinhead nowadays. All you'd have to do is get the buttons working, which I bet you can do with Lego. Marvel's First Family are teaming up to take on a supersized threat this summer. Fans had long wondered when Mr Fantastic, The Thing, The Invisible Women and the Human Torch would join the MCU. Marvel regained the rights to the characters after the Disney and Fox merger - along with other big names like the X-Men. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Disney initially dropped movies in cinemas and on streaming at the same time - at an extra price. Black Widow was one such film to experience this kind of release. The Hollywood giant then went back to exclusively releasing films in cinema, but was still relatively quick with the turn around from the big screen to streaming. Encanto, for example, released in cinema on November 24 2021 and arrived on Disney Plus a month later - December 24 - just in time for Christmas. Captain America: Brave New World for example flew into cinemas on February 14 but didn't release on the platform until May 28 - more than three months later.
