PUTRAJAYA, May 25 (Bernama) -- Vandara Siphadone, spouse of Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, went on a cruise around Putrajaya Lake here today.
Arriving at 10.30 am, she was warmly welcomed by Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, the wife of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Vandara spent about 45 minutes in friendly conversation with Dr Wan Azizah while admiring the iconic buildings surrounding the national administrative centre.
She also took the opportunity to view intricately carved wooden wall decorations featuring hibiscus motifs, crafted by artisans from Kraftangan Malaysia.
Siphandone and his wife arrived in Putrajaya today on his first official visit to Malaysia ahead of the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings in Kuala Lumpur.
The special aircraft carrying Siphandone, Vandara and the Lao delegation landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport's Bunga Raya Complex at 9.05 am, where they were greeted by Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick.
Upon arrival, Siphandone inspected a guard of honour comprising 28 officers and members of the First Battalion Royal Ranger Regiment, led by Captain J Lingesri Rao.
According to Wisma Putra, this marks Siphandone's first official visit to Malaysia since his appointment as Prime Minister of Laos in December 2022.
The official visit coincides with the 46th ASEAN Summit, the 2nd ASEAN-GCC Summit and the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit, scheduled to take place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on May 26 and 27, which reflect the strong and enduring relationship between Malaysia and Laos.

PM Immunity: Anwar Files Appeal Notice Against Decision On Legal Questions Referral

KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has filed a notice of appeal against the High Court's decision to dismiss his application to refer eight legal questions to the Federal Court, including whether a sitting Prime Minister enjoys immunity from civil lawsuits. Anwar's lawyer, Datuk Seri K. Rajasegaran, when contacted, confirmed the filing of the notice by Messrs Zain Megat & Murad. 'The notice of appeal was filed immediately after the proceedings ended yesterday. We hope to secure a hearing date before June 16,' he said. Yesterday, High Court judge Roz Mawar Rozain dismissed Anwar's bid to refer the eight legal questions after finding that none of the articles of a Federal Constitution (FC) cited by Anwar's legal team give rise to any real, substantial or justiciable question of constitutional law requiring determination by the Federal Court under Article 128(2) of the FC or Section 84 of Courts of Judicature Act 1964. On May 23, the Prime Minister filed the application to refer the eight legal questions, which also include whether, under Articles 39, 40 and 43 of the Federal Constitution, a sitting Prime Minister enjoys limited immunity from lawsuits concerning allegations of personal conduct that occurred before his appointment. The legal questions relate to a lawsuit filed by Anwar's former research assistant, Muhammed Yusoff Rawther, concerning an alleged sexual assault seven years ago. However, the Attorney General's Chambers on Jan 14, 2020, announced that it would not pursue the matter further, citing insufficient evidence and contradictions of material facts that could not support the prosecution of any person under Section 354 of the Penal Code. The High Court, which is hearing the lawsuit, had earlier set the hearing dates from June 16 to 19, and from June 23 to 25. -- BERNAMA

MACC first enforcement agency to step forward as HAWANA 2025 strategic partner

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is the first enforcement agency to step forward to become a strategic partner for the National Journalists Day (HAWANA) 2025, marking a significant step in strengthening collaboration between the media and public institutions. The strategic partnership was announced during the HAWANA 2025 Strategic Partners Appreciation Ceremony held at Wisma Bernama last Tuesday. Representing Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, MACC Director of Strategic Communications Hisyam Mohd Yusoff handed over a mock sponsorship cheque to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who officiated the event. Hisyam said the sponsorship reflects MACC's recognition of the media's critical role in disseminating accurate and timely information to the public. 'This strategic partnership is a gesture of support to media organisations for their contribution and collaboration in delivering important information to society. 'Insya-Allah, although this is MACC's first time as a strategic partner, it will set a benchmark for broader and deeper cooperation between the Commission and media organisations in the future,' he said in a statement. HAWANA 2025 has attracted the participation of 79 public and private entities as its strategic partners, including the Malaysian Technology Development Corporation (MTDC), Federal Land Development Authority (FELDA), Human Resources Ministry (KESUMA), Department of Veterinary Services, Malaysian Foundation for Innovation, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, National Art Gallery, as well as MK Curtain Berhad and GM Klang. HAWANA 2025 will take place at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur from June 13 to 15, with the highlight of the celebration, to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, scheduled for June 14. More than 1,000 media practitioners, representatives of local journalist associations, and media delegates from ASEAN member states are expected to attend, bringing together the professional media fraternity and industry experts to exchange ideas and forge strategic partnerships. HAWANA 2025, organised by the Ministry of Communications through Bernama as the implementing agency, will feature various events, including a media forum jointly organised with the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) on June 14 and a two-day HAWANA carnival and exhibition at Sunway Putra Mall starting June 13. There will also be sporting activities incorporating traditional elements, as well as visits to leading polytechnics in Selangor, Perak and Johor. HAWANA, now in its fifth edition since its debut in 2018, is organised annually to recognise the essential role of journalists in national development.
