AB de Villiers
commemorated former India captain
MS Dhoni
's 44th birthday by remembering him as an intimidating opponent with a remarkable career.
MS Dhoni's international cricket journey was marked by his captaincy success in winning three major ICC tournaments - the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup, and 2013 Champions Trophy, alongside various bilateral and continental achievements.
"It was very difficult to plan for MS Dhoni. When he was on song, nothing worked. Later on, we discovered that sometimes you could get away with wide deliveries with the seam, especially in the back end of his innings. We tried it. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't," De Villiers said on JioHotstar's '7 Shades of MS Dhoni'.

"The guy's class - not many game plans worked against him.
I have a lot of respect for him and his achievements throughout his career. He was definitely an intimidating player to play against. What a fantastic career he had."
Former India selector and cricketer Kiran More shared his initial impressions of Dhoni, noting the unique spark he saw in the wicketkeeper-batsman.
"At that time, if you looked at our batting order, you had Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman - all these players.

Yuvraj Singh was also there. But I felt we needed an aggressive player, who could come and hit fours and sixes, utilise the Powerplay, make runs in 15 overs, and also in the middle overs," he added.
"We were looking for someone who could hit sixes and boundaries — that kind of aggressive player wasn't visible. See, the top players were all of one mold. But MS Dhoni's strength — that power-hitting — we were looking for a different kind of player like that, to balance the batting order.

"If you want to make 100 in 10 overs, you can. We gave many wicketkeepers chances, but the spark we saw in Dhoni — I felt this boy is something special, something different. We were taking chances. He was raw. From there, we picked him and gave him a chance."
Dhoni was recently inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame alongside Hashim Amla, Matthew Hayden, Graeme Smith, Daniel Vettori, Sana Mir, and Sarah Taylor.
His international career statistics show 17,266 runs across formats, 829 dismissals as wicketkeeper, and 538 international matches played.
"It is an honour to be named in the ICC Hall of Fame, which recognises the contributions of cricketers across generations and from all over the world. To have your name remembered alongside such all-time greats is a wonderful feeling. It is something that I will cherish forever," Dhoni remarked on achieving this feat.
Although retired from international cricket, Dhoni continues to play in the Indian Premier League with
Chennai Super Kings
, leading them to five titles.

IND vs ENG 3rd Test: Rishabh Pant could make history at Lord's – Here's what to watch for
Rishabh Pant (Photo by) India's wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is on the verge of scripting history in the longest format. With 86 sixes from just 45 Test matches, Pant now needs just five more to surpass Virender Sehwag 's long-standing record of 91 sixes — the most by an Indian in Test cricket. What makes Pant's feat even more astonishing is the pace at which he's climbed the list. Chris Gayle SLAMS Wiaan Mulder for passing up chance to break iconic Brian Lara's 400-run Test record
Wiaan Mulder. New Delhi: West Indies legend Chris Gayle has lamented South Africa stand-in-captain Wiaan Mulder letting go a golden chance to stamp his name into the annals of test record-books by breaking one of the most iconic test records set by Brian Lara. At lunch on Day 2 of the second Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, Mulder was 367 not out as South Africa were the commanding side. As Lara, with his stellar 400 not-out inches away, Gayle thinks Mulder ought to have strived to achieve it instead of stopping just before reaching the milestone. Mulder pays respect to Brian Lara But Mulder opted not to take the record and had declared the first innings score of South Africa at lunch on 626/5, only 34 runs short of beating Lara mammoth record of 400 not out. His call made sure that the record of the West Indian cricketing legend as to the highest individual score in the Test cricket remained there. 'You never know what is destined for me, but Brian Lara keeping that record (of the highest score in Tests) is exactly the way it should be. Brian Lara is a legend. He got 400 against England – for someone of that stature, to keep that record is pretty special,' said Mulder. Chris Gayle blasts Mulder However, Chris Gayle, the West Indies great was not happy with the choice Mulder had made as he said that the South African had 'panicked and blundered' by opting against going after the historic milestone. According to Gayle, Mulder had a golden opportunity to make his name in the record books. 'If I could get the chance to get 400, I would get 400. That doesn't happen often. You don't know when you're going to get to a triple century again. Any time you get a chance like that, you try and make the best out of it,' Gayle said to talkSPORT. 'But he was so generous and said he wanted the record to stay with Brian Lara. Maybe he panicked; he didn't know what to do in that situation. Come on, you're on 367, automatically you have to take a chance at the record. If you want to be a legend, how are you going to become a legend? Records come with being a legend,' he said. 'I think it was an error from his part not to try and go to get it. We don't know if he would go on and get it or not. But he declared on 367 and he said what he had to say. But listen, it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get 400 runs in a Test match. Come on, youngster, you've blown it big time! 'It doesn't matter the opponent, if you get 100 against any team, that's a Test century. If you get a double or triple, 400, that's Test cricket. That's the ultimate game. He panicked, and he blundered, straight up,' Gayle added. His monumental innings in which he hit an unbelievable 49 boundaries and four sixes has now become the record of the highest individual score ever achieved by a South African in Test cricket.
