Fire erupts on a cargo ship carrying 3,000 electric vehicles off Alaska's coast. The US Coast Guard had to let the vessel burn off for more than 24 hours read more
A fire on a cargo ship carrying electric vehicles that contained highly flammable lithium-ion batteries burned off the coast in Alaska on Wednesday night. The fire kept on burning for more than 24 hours after it first broke out, said the US Coast Guard and the ship's manager.
According to The New York Times, the vessel carrying the cars began smoking on Tuesday afternoon when the ship was approximately 1,200 miles from Anchorage. The crew onboard were enable to contain it and sent a distress call 15 minutes after the smoke started emerging. The cargo ship belongs to the London-based shipping company Zodiac Maritime.

After the authorities reached the site, all 22 members left the 600-foot ship on a lifeboat and were rescued by a nearby commercial vessel, the Coast Guard said in a statement. A spokesperson for the US Coast Guard told local reporters that it was allowing the fire to burn out and was monitoring the ship from a safe distance since the lithium-ion batteries in the cars have a risk of exploding.

Why was the fire not prevented at the start?
Dustin Eno, a spokesman for Zodiac Maritime, said there were no firefighting vessels nearby to help put out the blaze, and that a salvage team was expected to arrive on Monday. Petty Officer First Class Shannon Kearney of the Coast Guard's 17th District in Alaska said that the American agency is planning to investigate the cause of the fire.
It is pertinent to note that Electric vehicles contain lithium-ion batteries that can overheat and cause fires that spread rapidly and produce toxic gases. This is what makes them difficult and dangerous to extinguish. According to the NYT, the vessel named Morning Midas was carrying 3,000 cars, including 800 electric vehicles, and had been expected to arrive at Lázaro Cárdenas in Mexico on June 15.

The ship left Yantai, China, on May 26, and stopped at Shanghai and Nansha, two major hubs for Chinese electric vehicle exports, before it set off across the Pacific. The trip was not unusual since imports from China dominate the electric vehicle market in Latin America. According to the International Energy Agency, more than 60 per cent of electric vehicles sold in Mexico in 2023 and 2024 were from China.

Electricity consumption by Public EV charging stations in T.N. increased 20% in financial year 2024-2025

Tamil Nadu's public electric vehicle charging stations (EV-PCS) used 16.17 million units (MU) of electricity in financial year 2024-2025, up about 20.8% from 13.383 MU in 2023-2024, as per data from Central Electricity Authority. However, Tamil Nadu lagged behind certain regions. Delhi had the maximum EV-PCS electricity consumption at 328.03 MU, followed by Maharashtra 216.82 MU, Karnataka 79.61 MU and Gujarat (64.11 MU), as per the data. According to data from Climate Trends, Tamil Nadu's total EV sales stood at 76,359 units in the financial year 2024-2025, with penetration of about 3.94 per cent. The two-wheeler EV penetration stood at about 4.12%, three wheeler penetration stood at about 14.27% and four-wheeler penetration stood at about 1.65 per cent. Ragavendra Ravichandran, co-founder and COO, Plugzmart, a Chennai-based EV charger manufacturer for high-power charging, said one of the challenges for charging infrastructure in the State was that the electricity tariff (fixed and variable tariff) was higher when compared to other States. Sriram J, senior manager, charging infrastructure at said higher electricity tariffs for charging stations when compared to other States was one of the challenges. However, he said with the establishment of Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Ltd. there had been a lot of improvements with feedback regularly being sought on challenges faced by the charging operators. 'For Tamil Nadu to enhance its position in the EV market, it must prioritize expanding charging infrastructure, implement consumer and manufacturer incentives and increase public awareness about the benefits of electric vehicles,' Archit Fursule, research associate, e-mobility, Climate Trends, said. Collaborating with stakeholders and aligning EV incentives with sustainability goals will further strengthen the State's commitment to green transition, he said. 'As Tamil Nadu continues to enhance its charging network and implement supportive policies, we can expect a significant increase in EV adoption. The State's proactive approach towards renewable energy integration makes it well placed to meet the growing demand for electricity from EVs. This growth phase is not just about numbers; it represents a strategic shift towards a more sustainable energy mode,' Mr. Fursule said. The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) report titled 'Electric Vehicle Public Charging Infrastructure: 2030 Roadmap' released in December 2024, said there was a high variability of electricity tariffs across States and stressed on the need to shift to single tariff with consistency across States.

Road near Delhi-Noida-Direct Flyway to be widened to ease snarls

The Noida authority will soon widen the road between Sector 95 and the Delhi-Noida-Direct (DND) Flyway, to ease persistent traffic congestion near the Rashtriya Dalit Prerna Sthal on the Noida Expressway by adding a 600-metre-long and 5.5-metre-wide carriageway, officials said on Saturday. The total width of the expressway will increase from 39.5 metres to 45 metres, as per the Noida authority, following recommendations from a survey conducted by a consultant hired specifically to study this high-traffic stretch, officials said. 'After the survey, the study recommended the removal of a one-metre-wide side paver, a 1.4-metre-wide footpath, and a 3.1-metre-wide paved surface to create the new 5.5-metre-wide carriageway,' the Authority said in a statement. To implement the project, the Noida authority had sought a no-objection certificate (NOC) on September 26, 2024, from the Lucknow-based committee responsible for the management, security, and maintenance of memorials, museums, institutions, parks, and gardens across the state. The committee granted the NOC on June 5, 2025, paving the way for the project. The Rashtriya Dalit Prerna Stha has long been a major traffic choke point, as traffic from the Sector 62–18 Elevated Road, Sector 18, Film City Flyover Loop, and Noida-Greater Noida Expressway abruptly merges from four lanes into three in front of the memorial, officials said. This abrupt lane drop causes daily slowdowns and peak-hour gridlocks, requiring extra traffic police deployment. To mitigate the situation, police had recently initiated a stop-and-go traffic control exercise using barricades near the Film City loop, but this led to congestion spilling backward onto the loop itself, traffic officials said. Further complicating matters is lane indiscipline near the DND Flyway loop, with many drivers abruptly switching lanes to either access the flyway or continue toward the Chilla Border, creating long vehicle queues and erratic flow. 'The new widening will help alleviate these issues by improving lane continuity and reducing bottlenecks. The work plan is pending final approval from the Authority. After clearance, the tender process will begin, and construction is expected to commence soon,' said an official, requesting anonymity. The plan mirrors a recently completed widening effort on the Noida-Greater Noida arm of the Expressway between the DND Flyway loop and Film City, where an additional lane was added to ease traffic congestion in that section.
