Uproar About Oprah Winfrey's 'Private Road' in Hawaii Divides Fans

Oprah Winfrey has come under fire again, despite refuting a viral social-media rumor that she kept a private road closed during tsunami evacuation efforts in Hawaii.
What began as a logistic concern has since evolved into a broader discussion about non-Indigenous billionaire land ownership on the islands.
On Wednesday morning, a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering tsunami warnings across the Pacific. The alerts prompted evacuation efforts from Russia to Hawaii.
Winfrey, who has lived part-time on Maui for over 15 years, owns more than 2,000 acres on the island, including a farm on the slopes of dormant volcano Haleakalā and a private road—now at the center of the controversy.
In a statement to Newsweek on Wednesday, a spokesperson said: "As soon as we heard the tsunami warnings, we contacted local law enforcement and FEMA to ensure the road was opened. Any reports otherwise are false."

A spokesperson has since provided further background regarding the road, which belongs to Haleakalā Ranch.
"While she has the right to improve and use the road, it's an easement, but it is owned by Haleakalā Ranch. Opening the road ultimately falls to the landowner (Haleakalā Ranch), which they were quick to do when the warning was issued to evacuate, working with local officials and Oprah's Ranch," the spokesperson said.
Still, online discussion has shifted from the specifics of emergency access to the ethics of land ownership itself—particularly by non-Indigenous billionaires.
The controversy echoes sentiments raised during the devastating August 2023 wildfires, when Winfrey and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson launched the People's Fund of Maui. Critics at the time questioned why two wealthy celebrities were soliciting donations from the public instead of contributing more from their personal fortunes.
Her spokesperson said: "Ms. Winfrey personally donated over $25 million in wildfire related efforts, in addition to creating a path for others to support the wildfire relief efforts through the People's Fund of Maui.
"Through that fund, nearly $60 million was distributed to over 8,100 residents as direct cash relief to serve as a bridge to support for those impacted," the spokesperson added.
This time, the discourse centers on colonization and land rights.
"I feel like criticism of Oprah should be more than access to a road and should also focus on why she or anyone not Indigenous to Hawaii would have a road," posted @abolitionistdoc, whose Threads post garnered over 27,500 views.
In response to another user who said, "She bought the land and built a road. Not that complicated," @abolitionistdoc replied: "It's not complicated but you may be missing the point: Colonization."
Another user, @allisonmizer, posted: "Just a reminder, Oprah is a billionaire and much like all billionaires our society worships, she does. Not. Care. About. You. (Or me.) PERIOD," with the message amassing over 159,000 views.
Others stepped in to defend Winfrey.
"Oprah is a good person. She's always had a good heart. No rich person has or will ever do anything for me or my family. I'm not expecting that, but I do admire her for her generosity," said Cody Keene.
"I know Oprah opened up her road to help evacuation efforts, but also, like, why do billionaires need private roads?" asked Carly Civello, whose post received over 275,000 views.
"She can have a private road on her own property. She also has security. Why is this an issue for anyone?" added Carolyn Anthony.
The situation has reignited complex questions surrounding land ownership in Hawaii.
Deepak Sarma, a professor in the Department of Religious Studies at Case Western Reserve University, told Newsweek that the issue highlights long-standing tensions in American history stemming from colonialism.
"The issue of land ownership in Hawaii exemplifies so many different issues that have plagued America since its inception by colonial settlers," Sarma said.
Hawaii's annexation and the 1993 Apology Resolution acknowledged the harm caused by colonization, continue to raise questions about who has rightful claims to the land.
Sarma also drew comparisons to Indigenous land rights in the continental United States and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico, where the legacies of colonization remain unresolved.
Sarma questioned whether public figures should own land vital to local communities—either in emergencies or simply for public enjoyment—and cited Vinod Khosla's controversial blocking of public access to Martins Beach in California as another example.
When landowners are among the wealthiest people in the world, Sarma added, the optics become even more complicated—especially in cases like Oprah Winfrey's, where a celebrated advocate for marginalized voices now faces scrutiny herself.
"Does she seem like a hypocrite? Or does celebrating her now seem somewhat counterintuitive for the throngs of her supporters?" Sarma asked.
The broader debate around Indigenous rights is not new. The wildfires that destroyed Lahaina in 2023 left many working-class families homeless, while developers rushed in to snap up properties—often at the expense of Native Hawaiian communities, who were disproportionately affected.

Dog Can't Hide Her Suspicion Visiting Stranger's House for the First Time
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The day owners bring home their new pet is filled with nothing but excitement and joy, from everyone involved, but one dog showed how skeptical the animals might be of strangers. Reddit user ChrisCrashOut shared on the subreddit channel r/dogpictures earlier this week how his relationship with his new pup started a bit rocky. From the moment he brought her into the car and began the drive home, she showed her skepticism. In the picture, the tiny dog sat on his lap. She first looked up at him with big, round eyes that seemed hopeful for what this new adventure would bring. However, red flags began to rise; who was this human? Squinting her eyes, she looked into his soul, trying to get a read on what his intentions were with her. Little did she know, his only plan was to bring her into her forever home. The owner didn't seem to mind the dog's reservations. He called it a "fair reaction" in the caption because, well, she didn't know him, realizing the potential stranger danger. Plus, she was going to an unfamiliar home. Screenshots from a July 27 Reddit post of a dog sitting in her new owner's lap, giving him a side eye because he's a stranger. ChrisCrashOut/Reddit Her hesitations continued once they arrived home, as she was greeted by unfamiliar dogs in an unfamiliar environment and unfamiliar smells. The entire day became overwhelming. "My other two dogs were very excited to meet her, but she was tired and slept all day," he told Newsweek via Reddit. But after a good night's rest, she knew there was nothing to worry about while being with this so-called stranger. It finally clicked for her: she was home. "By the next day, she was already playing/bullying my other two grown dogs and felt integrated into her new family," he said. What Do the Comments Say? The Reddit post quickly melted viewers' hearts, bringing in 643 upvotes and 17 comments as of Friday. They fell in love with her suspicious reaction and kept calling her adorable. "Bless her little face. I hope she settles fast and you have a peaceful night," commented one person. Another jokingly wrote what the dog was likely thinking: "I mean, you seem nice, but we'll see what kinds of foods and such await. A third said: "How dare you! Unacceptable!" Dog Finds Out They Skipped Starbucks—His No Pup Cup Reaction Says It All
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A golden retriever's glaring side-eye is sparking laughter among viewers online, after his disappointed reaction to missing out on a Starbucks pup cup went viral. Beau, a golden retriever in California, was captured on video by his owner sitting in the passenger seat of a car, visibly sulking. In the short TikTok clip, Beau stares ahead, refusing to look at his owner, before glancing back with unmistakable judgment in his eyes. An overlaid caption on the video added more context: "Someone's very upset we passed Starbucks without stopping for a pup cup." The post, shared to TikTok by @_beauthegoldenboy on July 30, has racked up more than 2.8 million views and over 609,000 likes to date. It has left viewers on the platform in stitches over Beau's dramatic display of canine disappointment. "His side eye! Don't worry he got his pup cup!" the video's caption added. A pup cup is a small, dog-friendly treat typically offered at coffee chains like Starbucks—usually a serving of whipped cream in an espresso-sized cup. While not officially on the menu, many locations provide them for free upon request, making them a popular ritual among dog owners during drive-thru visits. The treat is often shown in social media videos, with countless clips showing eager dogs lighting up at the sight of their pup cup, cementing its place as a beloved indulgence in the pet community. The brief video quickly struck a chord with TikTok users, who were quick to comment on Beau's expressive reaction. Several jokingly jumped to his support, pressuring his owner to get him the treat. "Better go back for a pup cup," a third viewer commented. "Hey, I don't like that," another commenter said. "Turn around." "Go back and get this baby a pup cup," one TikToker wrote. "When my [boyfriend] says no to a Starbucks," another said. "This face could ask me to commit wire fraud, and I would have a hard time saying no," a commenter said. "If you didn't turn around for a pup help me dog," said one commenter. "I would fall for that every time," another added. Pet Parents Play Dog a Recording of Her Cries—Her Response Is Priceless
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A dog's priceless reaction to watching a recording of her response while being home alone left viewers cracking up. It is hard to know how a dog feels or acts when they're home alone, which is why pet parents often install a camera that allows them to check in through a phone app. And, the curious owners of Duffy the maltipoo, a Maltese and poodle mix, wanted to join the trend of staying in the loop of their pup's response, especially since they recently welcomed her home. Duffy's owner told Newsweek that the pup cries and whines even when they're at home and in another room. They figured she'd be upset when home alone, but after setting up the pet camera, they learned the extent of the small dog's sadness. They jokingly shared a recording from the pet camera of Duffy's dramatic cries with the dog, which they later posted in an Instagram video to the account @ Her cries pierced through the recording. She howled in desperation that her humans would return. The moment Duffy heard the recording, her eyes bulged. She tilted her head in confusion. She couldn't believe the sounds and acted as if she weren't responsible. Screenshots from an Instagram video of a maltipoo watching a recording of herself when she cried while her owners left the house. Screenshots from an Instagram video of a maltipoo watching a recording of herself when she cried while her owners left the house. @ Duffy's owners were just as confused by the amount of noise she made, and the stress of leaving her at home alone caused her. "...I didn't know that she cried that hysterically when we left the house," one of her owners said. While the dog's stress hurt to hear, Duffy's reaction to the recording had her owners laughing, especially as she kept tilting her head side to side. And thankfully, Dufffy grew out of this separation anxiety phase. She understands that her owners always return, greeting them with nothing but happiness. She'll even remain calm when they leave. Viewer Reactions The Instagram video reached over 464,000 views as of Friday, as people flooded the comment section with mixed emotions. They felt horrible for Duffy experiencing the stress of being home, but her reaction became priceless. "The 'not me' look," pointed out one viewer. "She is like, 'That's not me, I don't know that another Instagram user commented. A third person jokingly wrote from Duffy's point of view: "Doesn't sound like something I would do, you must have me confused."
