Educator applied for 8 promotions, but N.J. district blocked her, lawsuit claims
A Belleville school administrator has filed a lawsuit accusing district officials of discrimination, harassment and retaliation tied to her gender and sexual orientation. Aida Cardona, assistant principal at Belleville Middle School, claims she has endured a hostile work environment created by Business Administrator Matthew Paladino, and a former state monitor. Cardona, who has worked in the district since 2011, was repeatedly denied promotions and professional opportunities despite positive evaluations, alleges the suit, filed July 15 in Superior Court of Essex County. She says she was demoted from principal to assistant principal in 2015 — just one day before she would have earned tenure as a principal — and has since been passed over for at least eight administrative positions. The complaint also accuses Paladino of making an obscene gesture about her sexual orientation during a 2023 staff orientation. Cardona says she filed two internal affirmative action complaints in 2024 and 2025, but the district failed to act or replace Paladino, who also serves as its affirmative action officer. Paladino was not in the office on Tuesday and unavailable to comment. District officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Cardona also alleges she was denied compensation for work tied to the district's new Junior ROTC program at the Belleville Military Science Academy. She contends Paladino and the monitor blocked her appointment to lead the program, despite assurances from administrators at the time that she would be promoted. The lawsuit seeks monetary damages, including back pay, attorney's fees and other relief under the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination. Anthony G.
