The prosecution noted that the testimonies of the two men, who were strangers to each other, were strikingly alike.
An Australian state MP allegedly raped a man and sexually assaulted another in two separate incidents that happened two years apart.
The 44-year-old independent MP for Kiama in New South Wales, Gareth Ward, was convicted by a jury on Friday at the Downing Centre District Court.
The court found him guilty of three counts of indecent assault against an 18-year-old man in 2013 and one count of sexual intercourse without consent involving a 24-year-old man in 2015, according to a report by The Independent.
The prosecution noted that the testimonies of the two men, who were strangers to each other, were strikingly alike. However, the defence maintained that the accusations were fabricated.
According to the report, in February 2013, the MP allegedly invited the drunk teenager to his South Coast home and assaulted him thrice in one night, despite the victim protesting.
Ward has denied that the alleged rape in 2015 occurred and contends that the second complainant is misremembering their 2013 encounter.
He has been released on conditional bail and allowed to reside at one of his two listed addresses.
As reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the Crown intends to apply for his detention next Wednesday.
Ward entered state parliament as a Liberal MP in 2011 and became a minister after the 2019 election. He resigned from the ministry and the Liberal Party in 2021 after revealing he was under police investigation, later serving as an independent. In 2023, he was re-elected as the independent MP for Kiama, narrowly beating Labor's Katelin McInerney.

Speeding car rams into tractor-trolley in UPs Gorakhpur; 2 dead, 3 critical

Last Updated: Gorakhpur (UP), Jul 30 (PTI) A late-night joyride turned tragic in Gorakhpur's Gulriha area, when a speeding four-wheeler crashed into a stationary tractor-trolley, killing two and leaving three others critically injured, police said on Wednesday. A group of five youths had set out to celebrate 18-year-old Satyam Nishad's winning Rs 18,000 in an online game. They left in a car owned by Abhay Nishad around 10 pm Tuesday, police said. Near Bhatat, the car allegedly hit a home guard riding a bicycle. In an attempt to flee, Abhay accelerated, lost control, and rammed into a trolley parked outside an Indian Bank branch, police said. The impact crushed the car and sent airbags ballooning, but that was not enough. Abhay Nishad, 22, and Bajrangi Nishad, 21, died on the spot. Satyam suffered an eye injury and deep head wounds, while Sangam and Vijay lost consciousness. The three alive were rushed to the local medical college, where their condition remains critical. 'The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem. The condition of all three injured youths is critical and they are undergoing treatment. The car was at a very high speed," Gulriha SHO Jitendra Singh said. 'The impact of the collision was so severe that the wheel of the roadside parked trolley got dislodged," he added. Trump's Tariff And Penalty Shock Sends GIFT Nifty Tumbling Below 24,700

Last Updated: Indian benchmark indices are expected to open lower on Thursday, July 31, in reaction to the tariff announcement GIFT Nifty fell sharply on Wednesday, dropping 0.70% or 174 points to 24,680, after former US President Donald Trump announced a fresh 25% tariff along with an unspecified penalty on India. The move, linked to India's continued trade ties with Russia, reignited concerns over global protectionism and weighed on market sentiment. Trump made the announcement via his Truth Social account, stating that the tariff and penalty would take effect from August 1. He accused India of maintaining high tariffs and non-monetary trade barriers, even as he described the country as a 'friend" of the United States. 'While India is our friend, we have done relatively little business with them because their tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the world," Trump wrote. 'They also have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary trade barriers of any country." The former US President claimed the new trade penalties were a response to India's large-scale imports of military equipment and energy from Russia. However, he did not clarify the quantum of the penalty beyond the 25% tariff. Indian benchmark indices are expected to open lower on Thursday, July 31, in reaction to the tariff announcement. Export-oriented sectors such as IT, textiles, and engineering may see heightened pressure, analysts said. On Tuesday, July 30, equity markets ended flat despite early gains. The BSE Sensex rose 144 points, or 0.18%, to close at 81,482, while the NSE Nifty50 gained 34 points, or 0.14%, to finish at 24,855. However, concerns around the delayed India-US trade deal and now fresh tariff headwinds are expected to weigh on investor sentiment going forward. Adding to the pressure, the Indian rupee weakened to a four-month low amid fears of a slowdown in exports following the US action. Impact on Economy Could Be Modest, Say Analysts Bhavik Joshi, Business Head at INVasset PMS, said Trump's tariff move has revived concerns around global protectionism just as markets were beginning to stabilize post-slowdown. 'A tariff of this magnitude poses risks, but its macroeconomic dent is likely to be contained," Joshi noted. Preliminary estimates suggest India could suffer a GDP loss of $3–8 billion due to the tariffs. However, that could be offset by $10–15 billion in potential gains from trade realignment and supply chain diversification. 'Markets may reprice risk temporarily, but structurally, India is better positioned than most to absorb and pivot," Joshi said. 'The focus now shifts to execution—on supply chain reconfiguration, INR trade acceleration, and bilateral trade deals. Amid the noise, India's fundamentals remain the clearest signal." view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
