Bloemfontein hopes for teen's return as accused officer's case postponed
'The only thing you actually have left is hope, which is instrumental and fundamental because if you lose hope you lose everything,' he expressed as he addressed the teachers and officials from the Free State Department of Education who came to the school to show their support.
Bloemfontein Courant reports the head of the Department of Education, Adv Tsoarelo Malakoane, echoed this sentiment by highlighting that the kidnapping of the learner brings up many questions about the morality of society.
'Our moral conscience is judged by how well we treat our children, especially children who are vulnerable. Who in their right mind would actually harbour an idea of harming someone who needed our support as a society?' he questioned. Malakoane encouraged the public to continue to stand by those who are directly affected during this time, as the department and school will provide counselling. 'If you feel like you need the support, please take advantage of what is provided to you,' he said.
Baukudi was kidnapped by two males impersonating police officers in Vereeniging Drive in Bloemfontein after he was fetched at school last Thursday. At the time of print, police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele confirmed that there are no new developments in the case.
The case of the 42-year-old police officer, Philemon Adoon, who has been arrested and charged with kidnapping and extortion, was postponed to yesterday, after the matter was brought forward on Monday. The suspect made calls to Baukudi's mother asking for a ransom. 'Specifically, what we focused on was the issue of kidnapping and in between, while the investigation was continuing, there was a ransom demand which kicked in,' Makhele explained.
Free State Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae commended the police for their swift response and for not being biased by arresting one of their own. 'What is key to us is to find Kamogelo, what is heartbreaking is the whereabouts of Kamogelo. We are here to support the family, to say we are with you in prayers,' she expressed after the court proceedings.
As the search continues, members of the public who might have any information that can help the police find Baukudi are requested to contact Captain Sabata Jafta Moseme at 082 526 2713, use the MySAPS app, or call the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111 with additional information.
The Citizen reports that the police officer's case has stalled after the court heard that the missing teenager, who is needed to identify the accused in an identification parade, has not been found.
The case against Adoon, charged with kidnapping and extortion in connection with the disappearance of Kamogelo, was postponed to June 24.

A 40-year-old man, suspected of vehicle theft, was denied bail at the Pretoria Magistrate's court on August 18. The case has been referred for further investigation. Limpopo police are on the hunt for suspects linked to the cold-blooded killing of two Zimbabwean nationals in Ha-Rangani Village, Limpopo, on Sunday. Responding to a call in the early hours, officers discovered a white Toyota Hilux 2.8 GD abandoned in the bush. Inside was the body of a 30-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds. Authorities also found the second man, aged 28, nearby, also shot dead. 'One of the victims was seated in the driver's seat with multiple gunshot wounds while the second was found a short distance away, also fatally wounded,' police said in a statement. Police recovered ballistic evidence and a cellphone at the crime scene. Both men were originally from Bulawayo. One had been staying in Musina Location while the other lived in Ha-Rangani Village. The case has been classified as a double murder and referred to the Provincial Organised Crime Unit. Atteridgeville crime sweep nets hundreds of suspects for various crimes A high-impact crime-combatting initiative, involving multiple law enforcement agencies led to the arrest of 319 suspects for various crimes in Atteridgeville this past weekend. The operation formed part of the district's ongoing initiative to combat crime with a focus on enhancing visibility, restoring order, and improving community safety. According to police spokesperson, Captain Johan van Dyk, the operation follows a structured approach that includes roadblocks, stop-and-searches, compliance inspections, and tracing of wanted suspects. 'Its main objective is to make communities safer through co-ordinated, visible policing and partnerships with stakeholders,' Van Dyk said. Spearheaded by the Acting District Commissioner of Tshwane, Brigadier Moses Dladla, the operation was supported by members of SAPS and comprised different stakeholders. Home Affairs, TMPD, Gauteng Traffic Police, and Community Safety departments assisted. Van Dyk said the detectives were responsible for the arrest of over 200 suspects for different criminal offences. 'Several suspects were arrested for a variety of criminal offences, which include 251 arrests by detectives, 66 for gender-based violence-related offences, two for murder, five for attempted murder, three for armed robbery and five for rape.' He said about 31 undocumented foreign nationals were detained, and they are now being processed by immigration authorities. Van Dyk emphasised that the multidisciplinary operation saw thousands of people, and hundreds of vehicles searched. '[A total of] 1 210 people and 890 vehicles were searched, which led to the arrest of 18 persons for driving under the influence of alcohol, with 86 traffic infringement notices issued, amounting to R47 050,' he said. He stated that the weekend operation specifically targeted crime hotspot areas. 'The police patrolled and searched 33 crime hotspots, leading to the arrests of 10 suspects for public drinking, with one suspect arrested for drug possession when four bags containing various drugs and a ball of crystal meth were found in his possession,' said Van Dyk. Police inspected 33 liquor outlets, leading to the closure of six for non-compliance, and liquor and a gambling machine were confiscated and seized, with two arrests made for illegal gambling. Dladla commended the teamwork of all participating departments and highlighted the importance of community support.
