Scouting America Troop 529 cleans Spectre Island
FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. (WMBB) – Members of Scouting America Troop 529 (Shalimar) removed hundreds of pounds of trash from Spectre Island in the Santa Rosa Sound. According to a news release, 11 youth scouts and seven adult leaders paddled canoes out to the island for a day of conservation to clean litter and debris. These members collected nearly 300 pounds of trash both inland and on the shores of the island. The island was littered with cans, spent shotgun shells, cigarette butts, a buouy, fishing debris, folding chairs and toys. 'I am extremely proud of these scouts and how they have lived up to the Scout Oath and Law as well as our slogan to Do A Good Turn Daily,' said Troop 529 Scoutmaster Chris Cutler. 'I encourage the community to follow the lead from these young scouts to be conservation-minded.' In addition, the scouts had the opportunity to complete the requirements for the canoeing merit badge, which included challenging deep-water canoeing rescues.
