Aerospace industrial park will help S'wak become competitive hub, says Deputy Premier

KUCHING: Sarawak is considering an aerospace industrial park as part of efforts to develop the industry in the state, says Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
He said the proposed park would include high-value aerospace manufacturing, aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities and conduct sustainable aviation fuel research.

"We are partnering with Airbus to expand the industry, create high-value job opportunities and attract foreign investment," he said when winding up matters related to the state International Trade, Industry and Investment Ministry at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly on Wednesday (May 28).
Awang Tengah said Sarawak aimed to create a dynamic and resilient ecosystem to become a competitive aerospace hub in Asean.
He said the newly-established Sarawak Aerospace Advisory Council would spearhead the development of the industry through education, workforce training and global partnerships to drive future investment.
To develop talent, he said an Aerospace Academy had been launched at the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) in Lundu, while i-CATS University College had set up a faculty of aerospace engineering.

"This will equip future professionals with hands-on expertise and globally recognised qualifications," he said.
Awang Tengah also said Sarawak aspired to be a key contributor to the global semiconductor supply chain by 2030 through the Sarawak Semiconductor Roadmap.
He said the roadmap was expected to create over 3,000 high-skilled jobs, commercialise intellectual property and promote talent development over the next five to 10 years.
"With strong government support and global partnerships, Sarawak is positioned to become a key semiconductor hub in South-East Asia, offering promising investment and trade potential," he added.

(EPA Images pic) NEW DELHI : Indian airline IndiGo said today it had signed an order for 30 more Airbus A350-900s, bringing its shopping list for the widebody aircraft from the European aircraft manufacturer to 60. 'We are placing a firm order for 30 Airbus A350-900s,' said Pieter Elbers, the CEO of IndiGo, a company founded in 2006 and already behind the largest contract by volume in the history of civil aviation – 500 Airbus single-aisle aircraft by 2023. The Indian low-cost carrier, the country's biggest by market share, is positioning itself as a significant player in the long-haul market. 'This strategic move will enable IndiGo to spread its wings further and expand its long-haul international network', the company said in a statement. 'This is yet another step in defining the airline's long-term plans of international expansion'. The A350 planes, with ranges of up to 15,000km, will allow it to further expand its network. Overall, IndiGo has placed orders for around 1,000 aircraft from the A320 family, Airbus's most successful model and rival of the Boeing 737 MAX, which has endured multiple setbacks after a series of safety scares. Willie Walsh, director-general of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which began its annual industry conference in New Delhi today, said 'the development of India's air connectivity in recent years has been nothing short of phenomenal'. Indian domestic air growth is 'running at over 10%' per year, Walsh said, ahead of the conference. The growth of its economy has made India and its 1.4 billion people the world's fourth-largest air market – domestic and international – with IATA projecting it will become the third biggest within the decade. Last year, India's domestic air passenger traffic reached a 'historic milestone, surpassing 500,000 passengers in a single day', according to India's ministry of civil aviation. The ministry boasts of a sector 'experiencing a meteoric rise'. Railways remain hugely popular but travelling by trains crisscrossing a country about three-quarters the area of the European Union is often slow and chaotic. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is slated to address IATA delegates tomorrow, has made the development of the air sector a priority since coming to power in 2014. India has doubled its number of airports in the past decade to 157, with plans to have as many as 400 by 2047.

Sarawak steps up role in ASEAN Power Grid, expands RE vision
OSAKA: Sarawak is stepping up a plan to integrate Borneo into the ASEAN Power Grid (APG), underlining its commitment to regional energy cooperation, said Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan. He said Sarawak has been supplying electricity to West Kalimantan, Indonesia, since 2016 and is currently in the process of supplying power to Brunei. 'We will play our part to contribute to the APG. Sarawak is also actively enhancing its grid infrastructure to strengthen power distribution across the state and beyond,' he said after the opening ceremony of the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, Japan, today. Besides renewable energy (RE), Awang Tengah said Sarawak is transforming its industrial landscape through strategic diversification into hydrogen, carbon capture, utilisation and storage, oil and gas (O&G), petrochemical products, and aerospace. These developments complement the sustainable O&G sector and expansion into high-value petrochemical downstream activities, leveraging advanced technologies and sustainable practices, he said. 'Sarawak is shaping a dynamic economic hub in Southeast Asia, balancing economic growth and environmental responsibility while achieving long-term prosperity,' said Awang Tengah. He said Sarawak is going to be the hub for RE, anchored in hydropower as it has the potential to generate at least 30,000 megawatts (MW) or 30 gigawatts (GW), if fully developed. Currently, Sarawak is targeting an increase in its generating capacity to 10,000 MW or 10 GW by 2030, and to 15,000 MW or 15 GW by 2035. 'Apart from hydropower potential, there is also huge potential for us to develop this RE through solar power and bio-energy from biomass and waste,' he explained. Awang Tengah also revealed that Sarawak will be hosting Sarawak Week with the theme 'Sustainability for Tomorrow' at the Malaysia Pavilion for the World Expo Osaka from August 4-10.
