Honda's MotoGP rider Marini suffers severe injuries in crash while testing

Honda rider Luca Marini suffered a nasty crash while testing in Japan, sustaining injuries to his hip, knee, chest and shoulder as well as a collapsed lung, the Japanese team said on Wednesday.
Marini had travelled to the Suzuka Circuit after the British Grand Prix that was held over the weekend and the Italian was testing Honda's bike for the Suzuka 8-Hour endurance race when he crashed heavily on the second day of testing.
"Suffering from a dislocated left hip, damage to the ligaments in his left knee, fractures in the sternum and left collarbone and a right-sided pneumothorax, Marini was transferred to local hospital and stabilised," Honda said.
"Marini will remain under observation in Japan until he is deemed fit to travel."
Honda did not give a timeline for Marini's return. The 27-year-old is 13th in the MotoGP riders' standings after seven rounds.
The next MotoGP round is the Aragon Grand Prix in Spain on June 7-8. REUTERS

Swiatek, who won the last three titles in Paris, has had a troubled pre-tournament swing, but the Polish player has been in fine form since Roland Garros started, reinforcing indeed her status as a favourite. World number one Sabalenka has also been steamrolling her opponents, conceding only 10 games and she powered into the fourth round with a 6-2 6-3 victory against Serbia's Olga Danilovic on Friday. The Belarusian dominated her opponent from the start and although she faced some brief resistance in the second set, she easily set up a meeting with 16th seed Amanda Anisimova of the United States as well as strengthening her title credentials. "I am super happy with the win, Olga is a fighter and I knew it would be a fight. She played like a top 10 player; pretty soon she will be in the top 10," said Sabalenka. Sabalenka started in ruthless fashion, racing to a 5-0 lead but Danilovic avoided the bagel by winning the sixth game on serve, going on to pull a break back. The resurgence was shortlived, however, as Sabalenka wrapped up the opening set with another break of serve. Danilovic put up a decent fight in the second set but there was no comeback on the cards as Sabalenka broke for 5-3. The three-time Grand Slam champion wrapped it up with an unreturnable serve on a half-empty Court Philippe Chatrier - a common occurrence on early matches at the French Open. Is that enough to make her the top favourite for a maiden French Open title? "It's tough to predict in women's tennis, you know. Let's just leave it (the favourite tag) on Iga since she won it, what, three times in a row, really, right?," she said. "Let's just... I will just leave it for her." Sabalenka experienced late resistance in her meeting with unseeded Olga Danilovic but won 6-2 6-3 and kept alive her hopes of winning a maiden Roland Garros trophy after major successes on the hardcourts of the Australian Open and U.S. Open. The three-time Grand Slam champion looked in ruthless form while racing ahead 5-0 but Danilovic avoided the bagel by taking the sixth game on serve and pulled a break back to give herself a small chance to come back. That match was halted briefly when the 18-year-old Mboko was down 5-3 in the second set as a fan needed medical attention but Zheng ensured her momentum was not affected when play resumed and quickly completed the victory over the Canadian. Former semi-finalist Amanda Anisimova required treatment for a blister on her right hand before the American secured a 7-6(4) 6-4 victory over Denmark's Clara Tauson to reach the last 16 of the major where she announced herself in 2019. Anisimova, seeded 16th, takes on Sabalenka in the next round aiming to improve her 5-2 win-loss record against the Belarusian top seed. "We're both big hitters, so I'm sure we're going to be going at it back and forth," Anisimova said. "Obviously she's one of the best right now. She's number one. I feel it's always a good matchup. I really enjoy the fight and the challenge she brings on. "I'm just looking forward to it. Hopefully I can bring my 'A' game. Hopefully it'll be a good match." Liudmila Samsonova will also expect to be fully tested when she meets Zheng after seeing off Dayana Yastremska 6-2 6-3. The takeover has been approved by the Scottish Football Association, Rangers said in a statement, adding that the new leadership has committed to invest 20 million pounds ($26.95 million) into the club. "This new ownership phase represents a significant step forward for Rangers FC," said Rangers chairman Fraser Thornton. "The incoming shareholders bring not only funding but also deep expertise in strategic planning, infrastructure development, and sporting excellence." Rangers finished their domestic campaign second behind champions Celtic for the fourth consecutive year, last winning the league in 2020-21. Both teams are tied on 55 championships. "This club's history and traditions speak for themselves, but history doesn't win matches," health insurance tycoon Cavenagh said. "We know that the true way to honour the club's heritage will be to drive performance. Our focus is simple: elevate performance, deliver results, and bring Rangers back to where it belongs - at the top." Rangers will compete in the Champions League second qualifying round for a chance to play in next season's competition.
