ICC Women's ODI World Cup: Fit-again Renuka returns, Shafali overlooked
For coach Amol Muzumdar, captain Harmanpreet Kaur and her deputy Smriti Mandhana, there will be comfort in the familiarity. The Indian squad is one they know best, a reflection of the core that had been fine-tuned over the past year. Pacer Renuka Singh Thakur's return to fitness and the ODI squad is crucial while a decision with great clarity was made regarding opener Shafali Verma.
Shafali, over the past year, had been knocking on the door with brilliant performances in the domestic circuit after her lean patch with the Indian team. She did return to the fold but it seems like the selection committee was not convinced to lock her in just yet.
Pratika Rawal, who has scored a whopping 703 runs at an average of 54.07 since her ODI debut in December last year, has done pretty much everything right to seal the opener's spot alongside Smriti Mandhana and it was only fair that they stuck to Muzumdar's word about prioritising her. Stability and consistency over explosiveness was what the selectors sought.
'Shafali played the Australia A series. She's in the system, (it's) not like she's not,' David said of the Haryana batter's exclusion in the press conference. 'We've got our eyes on her. Hope she plays a lot more and garners experience, it'll help serve India in the 50-overs format.'
While the Indian batting fared well against England and the tri-series against South Africa and Sri Lanka earlier, the bowling needed a spur. Now, India's spin attack, comprising Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana, Radha Yadav and N Sree Charani has it all – variety, experience and novelty.
'Spinners have always done well for the team even when we played in England, which is why we kept (most of them) in the playing XI,' said Harmanpreet.
However, the pace bowling department needed a shot in the arm. Renuka Singh Thakur, India's pace spearhead, had been out of action due to a stress fracture she sustained in December last year. She was back to her old self in WPL in March but did not play any India matches since then.
In her absence, many pacers were tested and rotated across both white-ball formats and some stood up to fill the void but Arundhati Reddy, Kranti Gaud and Amanjot Kaur made lasting impressions. Expectedly, each of them are rewarded with a spot in the World Cup team and with fit-again Renuka returning to the squad, India have their missing spur.
'Renuka has been a precious player for us. She had (some) niggles and was out of the game, but is now available. She is (one of) our main players. This is the main event and it is great that she is a part of the team,' David said.
Seam-bowling all-rounders are a luxury in cricket and especially in the Indian women's cricket team. When Amanjot impressed in the Women's Premier League and Indian colours both, it was clear that she would be treated like she is precious. Although she will not feature against Australia in the ODI series – the last bilateral assignment before the World Cup – due to a 'few small niggles', she is expected to be a key player for India. It also helps that she has the backing of captain Harmanpreet.
While there seems to be comfort in the stability that seniors such as Mandhana, Harmanpreet, Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti, Richa Ghosh, Renuka and Rana have to offer, there is also a sense of excitement around what newcomers Rawal, Amanjot, Sree Charani and Kranti have to offer.
'This squad has experience but also a lot of young blood. They are also enthusiastic. Amanjot being one of them. I am happy for her and have high expectations,' former India captain Anjum Chopra told HT. 'Some performances on the ground are down to an individual's exuberance. Kranti has it, Shree Charani has the excitement. It was their first time in England and you could see that they were thinking, 'Oh I am in England, I must perform'.'
All eyes will now be on the team to validate the trust that was placed in continuity and a safe route rather than a risky adventure.

" Sochke Mooh Kholna": Jasprit Bumrah's Critics Sent Clear Message After "We Lost vs England When He Played" Remark
Jasprit Bumrah, despite being the best bowler of the current generation, came under criticism after he missed two out of five matches against England in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy despite being fit. Following India's Asia Cup squad announcement, ex-Indian cricketer Mohammed Kaif welcomed pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah's return to the T20I set-up following a mixed outing in England where he struggled with fitness in the fourth Manchester Test, telling his critics to "open their mouths carefully" on the "promising diamond of India". Bumrah will be returning to the T20I set-up after over a year of heavy red-ball grind, which saw him also feature in tours to Australia and England. Following a record-breaking tour to Australia with 32 wickets, Bumrah took 14 wickets in three matches during the England tour, including two five-wicket hauls, but his lack of success with the new ball throughout the series and fitness issues during the fourth Manchester Test raised questions over his workload once again and whether he would play the Asia Cup for India in T20I format. Speaking about the pace spearhead's return, Kaif pointed out how Bumrah's critics pointed out that whenever he played a Test during the recently concluded England tour, India did not win. "Sochke mooh kholna (Open your mouth carefully) because you mentioned that whatever matches we played in England, we lost when he played. You better look at how many matches he has played and India won them, go and find out that as well, regardless of the format. When he plays, how many times does he give match-winning performances? Go and find that stat as well. Bumrah is a promising diamond of India. You do not report him. There are no stains on him," he said on his YouTube channel. Kaif said that as he had said in one of his previous videos, Bumrah could not be seen playing Tests for too long after his recent injury struggles, he could play white-ball games as the workload would be lesser and recovery time would be good enough too, especially if he gets rest during matches against smaller teams like Oman, UAE. "I already said that Bumrah might not be seen playing long in Tests, but in white-ball cricket, if India comes in the Asia Cup final, then he might play seven games. He will bowl 28 overs (four overs per match), and I am speaking about a two or three-week-long tournament. There is no problem in bowling 28 overs; he will get time to recover. You can rest him in one odd match against Oman or weaker teams. After workload management and a break, he will be used. I think he would not face any issues in bowling four overs. You need Bumrah in T20 because he can change the course of the game with his bowling," he added. Kaif, however, was disappointed with no Mohammed Siraj in the team sheet, saying that he will be missed because of his form, having emerged as the leading wicket-taker during the England tour with 23 scalps in five matches and bowling lengthy spells in each game. "There is no Mohammed Siraj as well, and he will be missed because of the form he was in, the way he bowled in England, bowled longer spells in each game. By bowling that much, you have the bowling form. He plays IPL and picked up wickets as well. If you see, he is bowling exceedingly well in the first 10-12 matches. So, I am surprised he was not in the 20-member side," he said. "I am disappointed because he finished the series 2-2 on his own. We know how well he bowled, and when you have the form, you want to back that bowler, and that is why I am disappointed not to see him in the Asia Cup. He is an equally brilliant bowler even in white-ball cricket," he added. During IPL 2025 for the Gujarat Titans (GT), he took 16 wickets in 15 matches at an average of 32.93, with best figures of 4/17. For India, he has taken 14 wickets in 16 T20Is at an average of 32.28, with best figures of 4/17. His last T20I for India came against Sri Lanka in July last year. India will kick off their campaign against the UAE on September 10, while the high-voltage game against Pakistan is scheduled for September 14, with both fixtures set to be played in Dubai. India will play their final group stage fixture against Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi. After the group stage, the tournament will proceed to the Super 4, where the top two teams from each group will qualify. If India finishes at the top of Group A, then all of their Super 4 matches will be held in Dubai. If India finishes second, then one of their Super 4 clashes will be held in Abu Dhabi and the remaining two in Dubai. The Super 4 stage will run from September 20 to 26. Dubai will host the final, which is scheduled for September 28.

Is BCCI above national interest? Aaditya on proposed India-Pak match in Asia Cup
Agency: Mumbai, Aug 20 (PTI) Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Wednesday wrote to Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya against a proposed match between India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup and asked whether the BCCI is above the national interest. The letter said many nations have been isolated in sports over a cause that is for the greater good of humanity. Terrorism is one such cause that prevents either of our nations from progressing peacefully. In the past decade, time and again, the country and its citizens have faced terrorist attacks based out of Pakistan, and the Union Government has reiterated it constantly, Thackeray stated. Recently, the Prime Minister also said water and blood cannot flow together from the ramparts of the Red Fort. Yet, only because of BCCI's insistence and desire for the money and ad revenue, probably, it holds the 'sindoor", and lives of our jawans as negligible, he said. 'Yet, sadly enough, and shamelessly, the BCCI is sending a team to play Pakistan in the Asia Cup. Is the BCCI above national interest? Is it above the sacrifice of our Jawans? Is it above the Sindoor of those who faced the attack in Pahalgham?" Thackeray said. 'We sent out delegations to the world, saying Pakistan is behind Pahalgam. Now, will we send out delegations to the world to justify why we are playing cricket with them?" Thackeray asked. It is truly a shameful act, when Pakistan has backed out of playing hockey in India, citing security reasons, that the BCCI plays Pakistan for selfish interest, the former Maharashtra minister said. The two marquee India versus Pakistan games will be held in Dubai during the upcoming Asia Cup, which is scheduled to start in the UAE from September 9. India and Pakistan will square off on September 14 in Dubai and one more time, potentially on September 21, at the same venue. The final on September 29 will also be held in Dubai. The tournament will be held in T20I format, keeping in mind the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka early next year.
