"It was state-orchestrated": BJP MP Tejasvi Surya slams govt over Bengaluru stampede

India Gazette05-06-2025
Washington, DC (USA) June 5 (ANI): BJP MP Tejasvi Surya has strongly criticised the state government over the stampede in which 11 people were killed near the Chinnaswamy stadium during RCB's IPL win celebration in Bengaluru.
Surya alleged that the Chief Minister's decision to invite fans to join the celebration without adequate security arrangements was 'state-orchestrated' and led to the tragedy.
While speaking to ANI, MP Surya said, ' The stampede was completely avoidable. It was state-orchestrated... Yesterday, the CM put out a tweet giving out an open invitation to everyone, knowing fully well, the frenzy of the crowd of fans. He gives this open invitation without making adequate security, safety, and crowd management arrangements.'
Surya criticised the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister for trying to 'hog the undeserving limelight' and making the event a 'family function' of Congress leaders. He demanded that the state government take responsibility for the lives lost and provide monetary compensation to the families of the victims.
Surya questioned the purpose of a magisterial inquiry announced by the state government, saying it would take 15 days to submit a report. 'Keep this 15-day report yourself in your house. Who cares? Will this 15-day magisterial report help these families?' he asked.
'You cannot blame RCB, Virat Kohli, or even the fans. If there is anyone responsible, it is the CM and the DCM who wanted to hog undeserving limelight and made this an entire family function of the Congress leaders... On stage, we see Congress leaders, their children, their daughter-in-law, son-in-law, everybody trying to take selfies with these people and hog the limelight. At whose cost? Lives that have been lost cannot be brought back.
Now, the state government must own up and monetarily compensate the families of those who lost their lives. Some young breadwinners have died in this stampede... The state government must take care of all the expenses of the injured. The government must also compensate generously to all the families who have suffered losses..', Surya demanded.
Surya also requested that the RCB management compensate the stampede victims as the team's moral responsibility towards its fans.
'No other team enjoys the kind of loyalty and fanfare as the RCB. Bengalurians treat RCB and RCB team members as a part of our own family, extended family. We have been there with you in terms of joy, in terms of, in times of celebration. Now it is time for RCB to also be in terms of distress and challenge with the fans and their families. RCB and RCB's superstar cricketers have made hundreds of crores from the love of fans over the last so many years. I think it is the moral responsibility of RCB to also generously compensate the victims of this stampede. And this is my request to the management of the RCB...' Surya said.
On Wednesday, Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy accused Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar of being responsible for the stampede, alleging that the incident was caused by the Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister's 'impatience, immaturity, and irresponsibility.'
Addressing a late-night press conference at his official residence in New Delhi, the Union Minister demanded that 'the person responsible for this tragedy must be immediately sacked from the cabinet.'
He criticised the Congress government in Karnataka as being run by 'arrogant fools' and said, 'We have a Chief Minister who is completely inactive. He has no control over the Deputy CM. As for the State Home Minister, there's no point in discussing it. He merely obeys commands.'
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar offered an apology. Speaking to ANI, DK Shivakumar said, 'This should not have happened and we never expected such a big crowd...The stadium's capacity is 35,000, but more than 3 lakh people were there...Gates (of the stadium) have been broken...We apologise for this incident...We want to know the facts and give a clear message...'
He accused the BJP of politicising the incident. 'BJP is doing politics...We are very sorry for the incident. We will work out a better solution in the future...'The Congress leader also said that all government events scheduled for tomorrow have been postponed after the tragedy.'...Tomorrow, except the cabinet meeting, all programmes have been postponed. No celebrations, including the World Environment Day...'
Shivakumar complimented the state police force for controlling the massive influx of people during the RCB celebrations.'Again, I'm telling on record. I should compliment my Police officers...morning also, they wanted to have a procession, they wanted to bring a vehicle from the airport itself...Police guided us not to...that's why I rushed to the airport and ensured nothing went wrong...in Vidhana Soudha, also we were very cautious...,' DK Shivakumar said.
Meanwhile, IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal expressed his condolences to families who lost their members in the stampede and said BCCI had no information that such an event was being planned.'This is a very unfortunate incident... We had no information that such an event was being planned... If such events are planned in the future, then proper arrangements should be made... Those who were sitting inside the stadium had no information about the incident,' Arun Dhumal told ANI.
The incident occurred near the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium when thousands of fans gathered to catch a glimpse of their favourite players ahead of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL victory celebrations.
The Karnataka government announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased killed in the stampede. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah addressed a press conference and said the government would also provide free treatment to the injured.
'A major tragedy occurred during the victory celebrations. It happened near the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The government has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the deceased. The government will provide free treatment to the injured,' the CM said.
Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, CM Siddaramaiah said, '11 died and 33 were injured in the stampede. This tragedy should not have happened. The government expresses deep sorrow over this incident.'The Karnataka CM further asserted that he has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the matter.'I don't want to defend this incident. Our government will not do politics on this. I have ordered a magisterial inquiry and given 15 days' time. People even broke the gates of the stadium. There was a stampede. No one expected such a huge crowd. The stadium has a capacity of only 35,000 people, but 2-3 lakh people came,' CM Siddaramaiah said.
RCB finally ended an 18-year wait for the coveted IPL trophy, defeating Punjab Kings by six wickets in the finals of IPL 2025, held on Tuesday at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. (ANI)

BJP's counter to Rahul Gandhi's ‘Vote Chori' charge - ‘Sonia Gandhi was on electoral rolls before Indian citizenship'

The Bharatiya Janata Party launched a counterattack on the Congress party on Wednesday by claiming that the former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi had been illegally, though briefly, added to the voter list 45 years ago, before she was an Indian citizen. Former Union Minister Anurag Thakur claimed Gandhi—born Sonia Maino in Italy in 1946 — was added to the list from 1980 to 1982, a year before she became an Indian citizen, NDTV reported. The allegation comes amid 'vote chori' charges by Rahul Gandhi, accusing the Election Commission of India of colluding with the BJP Thakur's allegations were first shared by BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya, who had posted on X hours earlier. Sharing a 'photocopy of what appeared to be an extract from electoral rolls of 1980, indicating Sonia Gandhi was a voter when she did not yet acquire the citizenship of Bharat'. "If this isn't blatant electoral malpractice, what is?" Malviya claimed Gandhi, who married Rajiv Gandhi in 1968, had been added to the voter list while the Gandhi family lived at the official residence of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. In response, Congress leader Tariq Anwar told NDTV that Sonia Gandhi had not asked for her name to be included in the voter roll. Anwar said that it was the poll body officials of the time who did so. "See... the Election Commission is responsible. Sonia Gandhi did not say 'my name should be included in the voter registration list'. In the end it was the Election Commission that included her...," he said. Anwar said, Gandhi never made a request to be added to the voter list. The BJP also alleged Congress defeated Bhimrao Ambedkar, regarded as the father of the Indian Constitution, in the 1952 general election through electoral fraud. If we start from 1952, Congress and CPI together defeated Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, a constitution maker and a saint-like leader, in the election. Congress laid the foundation of electoral corruption in the very first election of 1952," BJP MP Anurag Thakur said at a press conference held in the party's headquarters here. "Check the records: 74,333 votes were rejected, while Ambedkar ji lost by just 14,561 votes. Congress ensured that a constitution maker, a Dalit leader, was eliminated in the very first election. Imagine, the one who created the constitution was defeated by the Congress family through electoral fraud," he added. Sonia Gandhi did not say 'my name should be included in the voter registration list'. The BJP MP alleged that Rahul Gandhi and his family had a history of questioning the Election Commission when they lost elections. "This family and party have had a tradition from the beginning that if you lose an election, you raise questions about the Election Commission, the voters, or the functioning of the Election Commission. Indira Gandhi had said, Voters are a bunch of fools. When Rajiv Gandhi lost the election, he blamed the ballot paper. Rahul Gandhi's father used to say, conduct elections with voting machines, and Rahul Gandhi says, conduct elections with ballot papers," he said.

In much-delayed Haryana revamp, Congress gives equal share to Hooda, Selja factions

The Haryana Congress has taken the first step to set its house in order, announcing a list of presidents for 32 districts late on Tuesday, in what is the party's first organisational revamp at the block- and district-level in over a decade. Through the appointments, which were announced by AICC general secretary K C Venugopal after two earlier deadlines were put off in June and July, the Congress has attempted to balance two rival party factions – the one led by former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and the other by Sirsa MP Kumari Selja. The party has also tried to balance caste equations by attempting to shun its pro-Jat image, and to sharpen its focus on rural and urban outreach. 'I want to convey my best wishes to all the new appointees. The new district chiefs will ensure that the Congress is rejuvenated and has a new-found strength on the ground,' Hooda said. Around 15 of the new district chiefs are said to be from the Hooda camp while 12 are seen to be close to Selja. A known detractor of the former CM, Shamsher Singh Gogi, who is seen to be close to Selja, said the appointments were made 'purely on the basis of merit'. 'The new chiefs have been appointed on the basis of the workers' performance. They will give immense strength to the party at the grassroots-level. We are all party workers and will work together,' he said. In a bid to counter Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini's influence, who belongs to the OBC community, the party has picked 10 OBC faces as district chiefs. Six others are Jats and five each belong to the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Brahmin communities. The Punjabi, Rajput, Muslim and Sikh communities are represented by one member each. In cities like Ambala, the party has appointed three district chiefs – city, rural and urban – while it has gone for two district presidents (urban and rural) in nine districts. Three Congress candidates – Parvinder Pari (Ambala Cantt), Anirudh Chaudhary (Bhiwani Rural) and Vardhan Yadav (Gurugram Rural) – who lost last year's Assembly polls also made the cut. While Pari lost the Ambala Cantt seat, Chaudhary and Vardhan lost the Tosham and Badshahpur seats respectively. Others leaders who have been elevated include Pawan Agarwal (Ambala City), Dushyant Chauhan (Ambala rural), Pradeep Gulia (Bhiwani Urban), Sushil Dhanak (Charkhi Dadri), Baljeet Kaushik (Faridabad), Arvind Sharma (Fatehabad), Pankaj Dawar (Gurugram Urban), Brij Lal Khoval (Hisar Rural), Bajrang Das Garg (Hisar Urban), Sanjay Yadav (Jhajjar), Rishi Pal (Jind), Ramchander Gujjar (Kaithal), Rajesh Vaid (Karnal Rural), Parag Gaba (Karnal Urban), Mewa Singh (Kurukshetra), Satyavir Yadav (Mahendragarh), Shahida Khan (Mewat, Nuh), Netrapal Adhana (Palwal), Sanjay Chauhan (Panchkula), Ramesh Malik (Panipat Rural), Subhash Chand Chawri (Rewari Rural), Praveen Chaudhary (Rewari Urban), Balwan Singh Ranga (Rohtak Rural), Kuldeep Singh (Rohtak Urban), Santosh Beniwal (Sirsa), Sanjeev Kumar Dahiya (Sonipat Rural), Kamal Dewan (Sonipat Urban), Nar Pal Singh (Yamunanagar Rural) and Devendra Singh (Yamunanagar Urban). The appointments come two months after Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi met the state leadership in Chandigarh, where he said candidates who work for the party and 'not a particular leader' must be identified and shortlisted for the posts of district presidents. Following the meeting, held as a part of the party's nationwide Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan, AICC Haryana in-charge B K Hariprasad announced a list of 69 observers, who were tasked with building the party's organisational cadre across the state. Since it first lost power to the BJP in 2014, the party's state unit has been riven with fissures, with five AICC in-charges appointed in the last six years. Senior BJP leader and minister Anil Vij said little seems to have changed. Likening the process of appointing district presidents in the Congress to 'distribution of ghee agency rights', Vij said, 'In democratic parties, elections are first held at the block level, then at the district, state, and finally the national-level. However, in the Congress, the process starts from appointing a national (ghee) distributor, then state-level distributors, and finally district-level distributors. Now, it has appointed its district presidents. They will appoint office-bearers at the local level now,' he said.

Trump's takeover of DC police: Can he, why now, and is it necessary?

United States President Donald Trump has announced that he is temporarily taking control of the Washington, DC, police department, while deploying 800 National Guard troops to the city, saying the measures are needed to 'rescue' the US capital from a surge in crime. During a 78-minute news conference, Trump declared that the US government would take control of the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department to address what he called 'surging crime.' 'I'm announcing a historic action to rescue our nation's capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor and worse,' Trump said, joined by US Attorney General Pam Bondi, who will oversee the force. 'This is Liberation Day in DC, and we're going to take our capital back. We're taking it back.' 'Under the authorities vested in me as the President of the United States, I'm officially invoking section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act… and placing the DC Metropolitan and Police Department under direct federal control,' he said. He also announced the deployment of the National Guard: 'I'm deploying the National Guard to help reestablish law, order and public safety in Washington, DC, and they're going to be allowed to do their job properly.' Trump added he intends to remove the capital's homeless population, without giving details. The 1973 law granted DC a degree of self-government, allowing residents to elect a mayor and council, while keeping certain powers with Congress and the president. The Act allows the president to take control of the police if 'special conditions of an emergency nature exist.' Trump previously threatened to do this in 2020. The president can take control for 48 hours, or up to 30 days if Congress is notified. Trump said he plans to extend the takeover beyond 48 hours. DC Mayor Muriel Bowser pushed back: 'Let me be clear. Chief Pamela Smith is the chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, and its 3,100 members work under her direction. Nothing about our organisational chart has changed. And nothing in the executive order would indicate otherwise.' The US Army said 'between 100-200 soldiers will be supporting law enforcement at any given time,' handling administrative, logistics, and public safety tasks. The Guard will operate under Title 32 status — federally funded but locally controlled — and not bound by the Posse Comitatus Act. US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said Guard units will begin arriving this week, likely without openly carrying rifles, though weapons will be accessible. Hegseth said the Pentagon was 'prepared to bring in other National Guard units – other specialised units.' When asked about removing homeless people, Hegseth said: 'Our job is to stand alongside law enforcement.' Trump's order states that 'rising violence in the capital now urgently endangers public servants, citizens, and tourists' and disrupts government functions. It calls DC 'among the most violent jurisdictions in the United States.' The move appears linked to the August 3 assault on Edward Coristine, a former Department of Government Efficiency staffer and protege of Elon Musk. Police say 10 teenagers attacked Coristine and his partner; two 15-year-olds were arrested. Days later, Trump wrote on Truth Social: 'If DC doesn't get its act together, and quickly, we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the City, and run this City how it should be run.' He added that the takeover 'should have been done a long time ago.' Mayor Bowser questioned the need for the National Guard, suggesting more funding for prosecutors would be more effective. 'It is true that those were more challenging times related to some issues. It is also true that we experienced a crime spike post-COVID, but we worked quickly to put laws in place and tactics that got violent offenders off our streets, and gave our police officers more tools,' she said. According to Bowser, violent crime is now at a 30-year low. DC crime statistics show violent offences fell from 2023 to 2024, with 2025 continuing the trend: homicides down 12 per cent, assaults with dangerous weapons down 20 per cent. The FBI also reported a nationwide drop in violent crime of 4.5 per cent in 2024 compared with 2023. (With inputs from The Guardian, BBC)
