Paediatrician Vinay's poem on stampede victims wins hearts
The doctor, who harbours a passion for writing, composed a 12-line verse comparing the 11 fatalities to the 11 cricket players. His Kannada poem is titled 'Avaru Hannondu, Eavru Hannondu'.
The verses draw a parallel between the cricket match and the stampede with lines such as 'Eleven of them played the game, these eleven climbed the bamboo stretchers (Chatta in Kannada). Cricketers played in the cricket stadium while these eleven fell in the cricket stadium.
Cricketers were congratulated with vermicelli, and these bid farewell with sacred ash. Cricketers received the CM's awards and these received the CM's compensation'.
The poem highlights both the cricket frenzy and the gravity of the losses.
The composition appeared on social media platforms shortly after the incident, initially with an unknown author. Dr Dhanajaya Sarji, chairman of Sarji Hospital and MLC, later revealed the writer's identity.

In conversation with TOI, Dr Vinay said he composed the verse on a prescription pad upon hearing about the tragedy, though space constraints limited additional lines. The poem, initially shared on a doctors' WhatsApp group, gained unexpected widespread circulation. Dr Vinay expressed his disapproval of franchise cricket events like RCB matches that resulted in these fatalities.
The doctor, who has authored numerous poems, is considering publishing his works.
Dr Vinay is from Bhoj village in Chikkodi Taluk, Belagavi district, where he completed his schooling in Kannada medium. After obtaining his MBBS from Vijayapura and a postgraduate degree from Davanagere, he practised in Honnali before joining Sarji Hospital.

All government hospitals in Karnataka to have grief counsellors to boost organ donations
Bengaluru: Karnataka, which ranks third in the country for organ donations, is introducing several initiatives, such as recruiting grief counsellors at all govt hospitals, in its bid to boost organ donations. Initiatives such as one-on-one counselling and felicitating families of donors are already in place in the state to help reduce the stigma associated with organ donations. Karnataka, which trails Tamil Nadu and Telangana, is aiming for the top rank in organ donations this year. Bengaluru (27), Hassan (9), and Tumakuru (7) districts have the highest number of recorded organ donations in the state till Aug this calendar year. The state, with 44,882 pledges, is also ranked third in the country for organ donation pledges, behind Rajasthan (90,238) and Maharashtra (81,080). Dharwad is leading with the highest number of pledges in the state with 11,479 signatories, followed by Ballari (10,724) and Bengaluru (3,010) till Aug this year. Bengaluru has more organ donations as more than 50 hospitals are empanelled under Sotto, he said. As part of its information, education, and communication (IEC) strategy, the state govt focuses on highlighting the positives of organ donations. Dr Arun Kumar, deputy director, e-health and state programme officer for Sotto, said, "IEC activities, such as organ donations, being published in the local newspapers, honouring families of donors with certificates signed by the CM and minister at the district Independence and Republic Day celebrations, encourage others to sign up. In addition to this, NGOs are stepping in to conduct one-on-one IEC activities, and a member from the health department accompanies them. " The govt hospitals will each get one grief counsellor to help counsel families. "We have grief counsellors in govt hospitals in each zone (four districts form one zone) based on donations in the area. In the future, we are planning one grief counsellor in each govt hospital in collaboration with NGOs. We try to rope in medical education department hospitals wherever possible," commissioner of health and family welfare, Sivakumar K B, said. "Sotto is making its best effort and one-to-one connection where there is a possibility of organ donation, and motivating and creating awareness, so families voluntarily come forward to donate organs," he added. There are also many private IEC initiatives in place to help boost organ donations. Filmmaker Maya Chandra, recalled how good storytelling changed public perception of organ donation in 2016 in a small village in Tumakuru, prompting almost the entire village to pledge their organs. "On the 11th day funeral ceremony of Harish, an organ donor from Karegowdanahalli, Tumakuru, we screened a film. It had visuals of Harish lying on the road for a long time without help, but insistent that his organs be donated and someone else be helped through it. An organ donation camp was hosted by the hospital that harvested Harish's eyes. It was such a surprise that about 300 villagers — making 90% of the residents — walked into the camp with the sentiment that 'if Harish could do it, why can't I' and signed up for organ donations. They were touched by what they saw — Harish's gesture," she said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
