AI is making online shopping scams harder to spot

Yahoo16-04-2025
Online scams are nothing new, but artificial intelligence is making it easier than ever to dupe people.
What used to take days now takes a scammer only minutes to create.
A new report from Microsoft highlights the scale of the problem. The company says it took down almost 500 malicious web domains last year and stopped approximately 1.6 million bot signup attempts every hour.
"Last year we were tracking 300 unique nation-state and financial crime groups. This year, we're tracking 1,500," Vasu Jakkal, corporate vice president of Microsoft Security told CBS News Confirmed.
The company attributes much of the rise in this type of crime to generative AI which has streamlined the process to make a website.
"You can just buy a kit off the web," Jakkal explained. "It's an assembly line. Someone builds the malware. Someone builds the infrastructure. Someone hosts the website."
Jakkal explained that AI isn't just helping set up fraudulent sites, it also helps make them more believable. She said scammers use generative AI to create product descriptions, images, reviews and even influencer videos as part of a social engineering strategy to dupe shoppers into believing they're scrolling through a legitimate business, when in reality they're being lured into a digital trap.
Another tactic outlined in Microsoft's report is domain impersonation. Jakkal said scammers make a near-perfect copy of a legitimate website's address, sometimes changing just a single letter, to trick consumers into giving up money and information.
As well as raising awareness of these scams, the company is introducing new tools to help safeguard their customers. Microsoft's web browser, Microsoft Edge, now features typo and domain impersonation protection which prompts users to check the website's URL if the program suspects there may be a misspelling. The browser also uses machine learning to block potentially malicious sites before consumers reach the homepage.
"We're trying to combat at every place where we see there's a potential of someone being vulnerable to a fraud attempt," Jakkal said. The idea is to put checks and balances in place so people are able to pause and reevaluate, he said.
Scott Shackelford, executive director at the Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research at Indiana University, commended Microsoft for being one of the most proactive companies in fraud prevention, but said more action needed to come from both the private and public sector.
"Having the backing of big tech as part of this kind of public, private partnership would be a really great way to show that they do take it seriously."
No matter where you're browsing, CBS News Confirmed compiled some tips to spot sham sites.
Tips to stay safe while shopping onlineBe wary of impulse buying: Scammers will try to use pressure tactics like "limited-time" deals and countdown timers to get you to shop fast. Take a moment to pause and make sure the site you're on is the real deal.Check for typos in the URL: Some scam sites will try to mimic real companies. But since they don't own the domain, it's common to see a url that's just slightly off from what you'd expect.Don't rely on social media links: If you're going from an app to a shopping site, close out of the page that opens automatically and try to find it independently on a web browser. Check the reviews: Fraudulent sites will use fake reviews to make the products seem real. Watch out for similar phrases or wording in the reviews, or an overwhelming number of five-star reviews.Use a credit card: This allows you to dispute the payment or claim fraud if it turns out the deal really was too good to be true.

Stanley Druckenmiller ramps up health-care stock exposure, gets back into Microsoft

Billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller 's top three biggest holdings at the end of June were all health-care stocks and he also invested back into one of his favorite artificial intelligence plays, Microsoft , according to a regulatory filing. The former lead portfolio manager for George Soros' Quantum Fund, who now runs his own Duquesne Family Office, hiked his stakes in Teva Pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical company Insmed last quarter, making them his fund's second and third largest holdings, the filing showed. Clinical genetic testing company Natera remained Druckenmiller's top bet, worth more than half a billion at the end of June. The legendary investor, who has never had a down year in the markets, took a $100 million stake in Microsoft in the second quarter, after exiting the tech position in the third quarter of 2024. Druckenmiller was applauded for his big win on key AI player Nvidia in 2022 as he was one of the earliest investors to see the potential in the burgeoning industry, comparing the power of AI to the internet. He once called Nvidia and Microsoft his favored names to play the theme. However, he exited the winning bet last year, later admitting it was a "big mistake" as Jensen Huang's company continued its rally. Still, Microsoft is outperforming the market again this year, up 22% year to date. The stock topped a $4 trillion market cap on July 30 for the first time ever. Druckenmiller shot to fame after helping make a $10 billion bet against the British pound in 1992. He later oversaw $12 billion as president of Duquesne Capital Management before closing his firm in 2010.

Microsoft hints at ‘more affordable' Xbox Cloud Gaming plan

Two years ago we learned, thanks to the FTC, that Microsoft was working on a separate 'dedicated' version of Xbox Cloud Gaming. Microsoft Gaming CFO Tim Stuart then hinted, a few months later, that there could be a free version Xbox Cloud Gaming in exchange for ads. Now, Microsoft is hinting at making Xbox Cloud Gaming 'more affordable' again. Jason Ronald, Microsoft's VP of Next Generation, has appeared on the company's official Xbox podcast today, to discuss Xbox Cloud Gaming, Xbox Play Anywhere, and Microsoft's next-gen chip partnership with AMD. At the moment Xbox Cloud Gaming is only part of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, meaning you have to pay $19.99 a month to get access to xCloud. 'One of the things we see is there's a lot of players who use Game Pass Ultimate to access the cloud, whether that's the primary way they play, or an additional way to play on the go,' says Ronald. 'I think for us, it really opens up the opportunity to make it much more affordable, and make it more accessible to players. Whether that's going into new regions, or new ways to actually access the [Xbox] cloud.' Microsoft's hints of a more affordable version of Xbox Cloud Gaming come just hours before Nvidia has some 'major' GeForce Now news. Nvidia's cloud gaming service is far superior to Xbox Cloud Gaming, thanks to PC-powered performance, better bitrates, higher resolution gameplay, and lower latency. Microsoft has even integrated GeForce Now into its own Xbox game pages. Ronald stops short of announcing a new Xbox Cloud Gaming tier, but it's clear that's been Microsoft's thinking for a few years now. Microsoft started expanding Xbox Cloud Gaming beyond just the Game Pass library last year, with the ability to stream games you own as long as you're an Ultimate subscriber. There's an opportunity to bring that Ultimate paywall down, especially for mobile streaming. Microsoft had planned to sell games directly in its Xbox app for Android and allow customers to immediately stream those games directly to their phones and tablets, but a legal battle has put those plans on hold. Microsoft is currently preparing the next generation of Xbox Cloud Gaming, alongside its next-gen Xbox console work. 'Together with AMD, we're designing dedicated silicon and hardware to enable the next generation of gaming experiences,' says Ronald. 'We're investing deeply in the next generation of rendering technologies, such as neural rendering, which will bring a new level of quality to the games that you're having.' That next generation of Xbox hardware will likely see Xbox and Windows move even closer together, alongside the choice of different stores for Xbox owners. It's also an opportunity for Microsoft to bring more AI-powered features to the next Xbox. 'We're also investing in dedicated silicon to enable the next generation of AI capabilities, that will be transformative in how you actually experience your gameplay,' says Ronald. Microsoft will 'start experimenting' with some of these AI-powered features on the upcoming Xbox Ally X device, because it has a dedicated NPU chip just like Microsoft's Copilot Plus PCs.
