Bankrupt Claire's to keep around 800 stores open after selling North American business for $104M

New York Posta day ago
Jewelry retailer Claire's said Wednesday it would sell its North American business to private equity firm Ames Watson for $104 million in cash, in a deal that will keep at least 795 retail locations in business.
The sale agreement will 'allow the Claire's brand to remain a prominent retailer for teens, tweens, and young girls around the world,' Claire's said in a court document filed on Wednesday.
Ames Watson, a private holding company that owns athletic apparel brands including Champion Teamwear and Lids, is acquiring Claire's brand and up to 950 Claire's stores, according to court documents.

Claire's has halted 'going out of business sales' at all stores that could be sold, but it will continue liquidation sales at other locations.
Claire's, which sells earrings and fashion accessories for teens and young girls, filed for bankruptcy in Delaware earlier this month with more than $690 million in debt. The company, which previously filed for bankruptcy in 2018, operates more than 2,300 stores across 17 countries in North America and Europe.

Ames Watson co-founder Lawrence Berger said in a statement that the firm was 'committed to investing in its (Claire's) future by preserving a significant retail footprint across North America.'
Ames Watson will also provide noncash considerations as part of the sale, such as taking on liabilities owed to Claire's vendors and landlords, continuing to employ current retail staff at acquired Claire's stores, and extending $36 million in credit that the bankrupt company can use to address some of its pre-existing debt.
Claire's will seek approval of the sale on Thursday at a court hearing in Wilmington, Del.

Claire's has suffered in recent years from increased competition, high rent costs, and new tariffs on imports from supplier nations such as China, Thailand and Vietnam.

Hundreds of Claire's stores aren't closing anymore—here's why

Claire's has found a buyer just two weeks after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. It announced on Wednesday, August 20, that it plans to sell its North America business and IP to Ames Watson, a private equity firm. Courts in the U.S. and Canada must approve the sale for it to proceed. Zillow changes course on home prices: Updated forecast for 400 housing markets When is Apple's iPhone 17 launch event? According to the sale motion, Ames Watson will pay $104 million in cash, plus a $36 million seller note for the assets. Finding a buyer has been a critical goal for Claire's. At the time of filing, Claire's CEO Chris Cramer said the company was in 'active discussions with potential strategic and financial partners' to find alternatives to shutting down stores. Claire's had claimed its North American stores would stay open during bankruptcy proceedings, but named 18 locations across the country that would likely close soon. It said another 1,236 stores could close by October 31 if the company didn't find a buyer in time. In light of the agreement, 'Claire's has paused the liquidation process at a significant number of stores.' The stores that will stay open could total as many as 950 in North America, though some stores in the region will continue with liquidation. 'We are pleased to have the opportunity to partner with Claire's and support the next chapter for this iconic brand,' Ames Watson CEO Lawrence Berger said in a statement. 'We are committed to investing in its future by preserving a significant retail footprint across North America, working closely with the Claire's team to ensure a seamless transition and creating a renewed path to growth based on our deep experience working with consumer brands.'
