Banque Misr, EBRD sign Egypt's first $100 mln sustainability-linked loan - Economy

Egypt's Ministry of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation announced on Thursday the signing of the country's first sustainability-linked loan agreement, valued at $100 million, between the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Banque Misr. The agreement was signed in the presence of the Minister of Planning and Egypt's Governor at the EBRD, Rania Al-Mashat; Banque Misr CEO Hisham Okasha; EBRD Managing Director for Financial Institutions Francis Malige; and EBRD Regional Director for the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean Mark Davis. 'This agreement aligns with our broader strategy to integrate sustainability into our financing framework,' stated Al-Mashat. 'We are committed to working with international partners to increase access to green finance and empower the private sector to contribute to sustainable development.' She noted that since 2020, Egypt has secured over $15.6 billion in concessional financing for the private sector, with more than 40 per cent directed toward financial institutions. The loan is part of Egypt's broader effort to expand access to international financing for local banks and businesses. The Ministry recently signed a cooperation protocol with the Federation of Egyptian Banks to strengthen financing tools through the Hafiz platform, which connects lenders with private sector projects seeking financial and technical support. The EBRD, which dedicates more than 80 percent of its global portfolio to the private sector, has directed over 28 percent of its operations in Egypt toward financial institutions—an approach Al-Mashat said reflects 'a deep understanding of local market needs and the banking sector's capabilities.' She also praised the efforts of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) and the Financial Regulatory Authority in fostering an enabling environment for innovation in financial products and services. Al-Mashat cited the success of Egypt's NWFE platform—its flagship climate-finance initiative—as an example of an integrated finance strategy. The platform, she said, has gained international recognition, most recently at the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development. Despite regional and global economic challenges, Egypt recorded 4.7 percent GDP growth in the third quarter of 2025. Private investments now account for more than 60 percent of total investment, according to the Ministry. The Ministry's new cooperation model with Egyptian banks aims to expand access to concessional financing, particularly for SMEs, by facilitating data sharing, streamlining application processes, and enhancing advisory support through digital platforms. 'This is not just about funding,' Al-Mashat said. 'It's about embedding sustainable finance into the national development fabric.' Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Egypt's agricultural exports hit 5.8 million tons to date

Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa Farouq affirmed that the recent growth in Egypt's agricultural exports constitutes clear evidence of the sector's resilience, strength, and increasing competitiveness on the global stage. Farouq added that these results reflect the concerted efforts undertaken at all levels to ensure that Egyptian agricultural products reach international markets at the highest standards of quality, thereby further solidifying Egypt's position as a regional and global agricultural hub. He reiterated the Ministry of Agriculture's commitment to sustaining efforts aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity, improving crop quality, and broadening the range of export markets, initiatives designed to support both the national economy and the livelihoods of Egyptian farmers. The minister also announced a notable increase in Egypt's agricultural exports, which have surpassed 5.8 million tons to date, with citrus fruits and potatoes maintaining their positions at the top of the country's export list. This information was detailed in a report submitted on Friday 11/7/2025 to the minister by Ahmed Ozzam, Head of the Agricultural Services and Monitoring Sector. The report, based on statistics from the Central Administration of Plant Quarantine (CAPQ), outlined the continued progress of Egyptian agricultural exports in international markets. According to the report, citrus exports have surpassed 1.9 million tons, maintaining their position as Egypt's leading agricultural export. Potatoes ranked second, with approximately 1.3 million tons exported, reflecting sustained international demand for both crops, attributed to their consistently high quality. According to the same statistics, exports of fresh onions reached approximately 209,000 tons, while fresh and dry beans accounted for around 160,000 tons. Grape exports totaled approximately 120,000 tons, securing the fifth position among Egyptian agricultural exports, followed by sweet potatoes in sixth place with about 115,000 tons exported. The list of top Egyptian agricultural exports also includes, in descending order: fresh garlic, fresh strawberries, fresh tomatoes, guava, mangoes, and pomegranates. Farouq underlined that his ministry is continuously working to support exporters by removing obstacles and enhancing the global competitiveness of Egyptian products. He highlighted the pivotal role of the agricultural sector in Egypt's economy and its significant contribution to the country's comprehensive development plans. Minister Farouq further explained that the exceptional performance of the agro export system stems from collaboration among farmers, producers, and exporters, all dedicated to cultivating high-quality crops in accordance with best agricultural practices. He noted that this collaborative effort is supported by ongoing oversight from agricultural engineers and researchers, the Central Administration of Plant Quarantine (CAPQ), central reference laboratories within the ministry, and the Department of Foreign Agricultural Relations. 'Together, these entities work to open new markets for Egyptian produce and to ensure thorough monitoring of the entire supply chain, from the farm to international markets,' he added.

Egypt and China sign 1st phase of debt-for-development swap program

Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, Rania al-Mashat, and the Chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), Chen Xiaodong on Thursday signed five new cooperation documents aimed at boosting Egyptian-Chinese strategic relations. These include a Memorandum of Understanding for the first development cooperation strategy between the two countries for 2025/2029, and the first phase of the debt-for-development swap program. The documents were signed at the Cabinet headquarters in the New Administrative Capital. The signing was witnessed by Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, and Premier of the State Council of China, Li Qiang. The two sides signed an MoU on the first development cooperation strategy between Egypt and China from 2025-2029. This aims to promote development cooperation between the two countries in line with Egypt's National Development Strategy 2030 and the Global Development Initiative (GDI). The MoU stipulates enhancing cooperation in priority areas for both sides, including healthcare, connectivity, climate change and green development, digital economy, space, education, and industrial localization, which will serve as an opportunity for joint initiatives, as well as any other areas that the two sides may agree upon during this period. The strategy also encourages exploration of additional projects that align with the GDI and Egypt's Vision 2030, including those that promote green transformation and industrial localization. This initiative builds upon the MoU signed by Mashat during her participation in the GDI meetings in July 2023. The two parties also signed the framework agreement for the first phase of a Debt Swap for Development Program, activating an MoU originally signed in October 2023. Egypt is the first country with which CIDCA has entered into this kind of development financing agreement. The Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) Hassan Abdalla also signed a MoU with Governor of the People's Bank of China (PBOC) Pan Gongsheng, on Friday, to boost joint collaboration across various areas of mutual interest between the two banks. The signing ceremony at the Egyptian Cabinet was witnessed by the Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, and Li Qiang, Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, alongside senior officials from both countries. The MoU aims to promote the use of local currency settlements for cross-border financial and trade transactions, while facilitating direct investments between both sides to foster economic integration. It also includes provisions to strengthen cooperation on Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDC). Additionally, it supports financial innovation using modern technology through conducting joint research and studies, as well as exchanging technical information and expertise. Abdalla affirmed that 'This MoU reflects the evolution of the historic ties between Egypt and China. It demonstrates both institutions' commitment to strengthening partnerships between their respective financial institutions in light of global economic developments.' Further agreements Mashat also signed the exchange of letters for a feasibility study grant for the national project to develop the prosthetics system, amounting to 1,520,000 Chinese Yuan. This project aims to make Egypt a regional hub in the Middle East and Africa for providing prosthetic limbs and assistive devices for people with disabilities, as well as possessing the manufacturing capability for them according to internationally approved standard specifications. Mashat, and the Chairman of the CIDCA, also signed an MoU on strengthening cooperation in human resources development, complementing the Ministry's role as a national coordinator for the annual training program provided by the Chinese side to the Egyptian government. Through this, the Chinese side will provide up to 2,000 training opportunities for Egypt in bilateral and multilateral training programs during the period from 2025-2027. The two sides also signed exchange of letters for the grant for the establishment of a Level-III Biosafety Laboratory, which will provide a secure environment for research, diagnosis, and the development of control measures for highly hazardous pathogens that require strict containment procedures, such as highly infectious viruses like COVID-19 and its variants.
