Tottenham sacks Postecoglou days after Europa League title win
Australian coach Ange Postecoglou has been sacked by Tottenham, days after he led the Premier League club to the UEFA Europa League title.
'Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties,' the club said in a statement.
Tottenham defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final on May 22 to end a 17-year title drought. However, the North London side finished a lowly 17th - just above the relegated teams - with 38 points in as many matches in the Premier League.
'We are extremely grateful to Ange for his commitment and contribution during his two years at the Club,' the club added. Postecoglou joined Spurs in 2023 on a four-year contract from Celtic.
'However, the Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place. Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the Club's greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph,' the statement read.
Shortly after winning Europe's second-tier of club football, Postecoglou had promised the fans more success in the future. 'I told them, and they laughed. I told them, and they didn't believe. And here we are. I'll leave you with this: all the best television series, season three is better than season two,' he had said.

Labuschagne is preparing for Australia's title defence in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa, which is scheduled to kick off at Lord's on Wednesday. The 30-year-old Australian outlined the factors that make WTC an 'exciting' affair, a tournament that has worked 'great'. 'It is an exciting tournament. It means every Test you play has something on it, it brings all the countries into play, and anyone can make the final. You're playing for a trophy at the end of a two-year cycle. I think it has worked great. Two years ago, when we beat India, it was awesome.
