Alessia Russo: I fell into ‘trap' of scrolling social media at last Euros
On Tuesday tennis player Katie Boulter lifted the lid on the level of abuse aimed at some in her sport and revealed she and her family have received death threats.
Arsenal forward Russo, who is gearing up for next month's Euros, said she could empathise with Boulter and has learned to avoid the platforms for the benefit of both her mental health and her football.
'I think every player might have a different story about that side of the game, but it's definitely one that can be really damaging,' said Russo.
'I have faced it in the past and I think most players here have. When I was younger I probably got sucked into it more. I read it more than I should have and listened to it more than I should have. The only opinions that matter are my team-mates, my coaches and my family.
'I think you have to remember that they are the people you need to lean on in tough times. As I've got older, I understand more what works for me. In my first Euros I was on social media and I would have a look, have a scroll, and I got caught in a trap sometimes.
'Going into the World Cup, I completely came off everything and I had people to run my Instagram. I just focused on the tournament. It's personal preference and whatever works for the team. Staying away from it and staying focused as a team is what works for me.'
Manchester United attacking midfielder Ella Toone added: 'It's individual. Whenever we go to a tournament it's individual. It's what people want to do.

'I know that my decision might be different to someone else's and I have to respect that decision. I do like to scroll on Instagram. But I know other people turn their phones off.
'We have that conversation and all know how each other wants to go through the tournament. We respect each other's decision. If I see something on Instagram I'm not going to tell someone or blurt it out to the team because they don't want to see it. I think it's a personal preference.'
The majority of Sarina Wiegman's squad – save three United States-based players due to link up next week – have now assembled ahead of the start of their European title defence, which kicks off with their Zurich opener against France on July 5.
Much has changed for best friends Russo and Toone – and women's football – since the Lionesses lifted their first major trophy on home soil in 2022 and reached their first World Cup final the following summer.
'We understand this is like a new England,' Russo added.
'We have lots of different players with different strengths and it's about bringing all of that together and using each other's strengths. New players are coming in and you have seen the impact they have made straight away in big games.
'I think we have evolved in many different ways, tactically. But in terms of having that energy from young players coming through, it's something that's really exciting.'

Manchester United fans criticise ticket rises as ‘kick in the teeth' after worst Premier League season
A rise in ticket prices at Manchester United has been described as a 'kick in the teeth' for fans. It comes after the Red Devils finished in 15th place in the Premier League, before losing in the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur. United, owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe recorded both their fewest Premier League points tally in a single season and their lowest finish. However, the announcement of the club's new 'match categorisation model' will lift the cheapest ticket price by over 50% for the majority of games. For around 20,000 tickets, which applies to the club's members, cup match prices will rise from £32 to £52. Premier League prices now range from £60 to £97 instead of £37 to £59, again rising after a record-breaking poor campaign. The Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) has called the move a 'fresh kick in the teeth', claiming that fans were not consulted about the plans. It went on to say the plans would do 'enormous harm', undermining the atmosphere at Old Trafford and pushing away regular supporters in favour of what it called occasional visitors. A spokesperson for the Trust said: 'After how last season went, we might have hoped the club would reconsider their plans for this new ticketing model which will see eye-watering price increases for 20,000 supporters per game who buy tickets on a match-by-match basis. 'When the club said they were introducing this new model for members tickets, we urged them to keep the majority of matches at current levels and only apply the highest price category for a small number of the biggest games, and reduced prices for lower demand games. 'Once again, they have failed to consult any of the fans representative bodies on the details of the decision, and once again they're making choices against the interests of fans and, we believe, the club as a whole.' Ruben Amorim will take change of his first full campaign as United boss after replacing Erik ten Hag early in the 2024/25 term, looking to rebuild the club after seasons of failings on the pitch and anger of it. The MUST statement added: 'What Manchester United needs next season is a united fanbase and club, with the team on the pitch supported by loyal and vocal fans roaring it back after the disaster that was last year. 'These ticketing decisions only push those regular supporters away in favour of occasional visitors and risk pricing out the next generation of younger fans who are the very future of the club.'

"To those who wish me ill, I wish them healing, because nobody who is well in themselves wishes the destruction of another." In his post on the matter, De Hoyos added: "Lamine would not have gone alone to this holiday place but with other Barca team-mates. "Fati probably does have something with another Barca person or is a friend of another team-mate."

Arsenal icon worried about Mikel Arteta's decision after £30m transfer deal
Arsenal hero Theo Walcott has admitted to being "worried" by Chelsea's move to sign Ipswich striker Liam Delap, who he has also tipped to be England's next great No. 9 Arsenal hero Theo Walcott has shared his concerns about the Gunners missing out on the signing of new Chelsea hotshot Liam Delap. The forward made waves in the Premier League with Ipswich last season, netting 12 goals despite the team's relegation after their first spell in the top tier since 2001/02. Delap, 22, had a tempting £30million release clause which Chelsea pounced on to boost their front line for the upcoming Champions League campaign. Manchester United also showed interest, but Delap preferred the Stamford Bridge outfit. The striker sealed a long-term six-year agreement amid the club's battle for firepower up front among existing forwards Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku and Marc Guiu. Amid persistent rumours connecting Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko to a switch to the Emirates this summer, Walcott frankly admitted that Chelsea's deal for Delap puts him on edge. Walcott, who became an analyst on Match Of The Day last summer, articulated his fears during an interview with The Athletic: "When people speculate, clubs look for a No. 9 and the fans get upset or confused saying, 'Why can't we find a No 9?' It's really hard to find them because everyone wants to be that really predictable player... those who like to come inside. "Strikers are selfish, they just want to score goals. But now, all of a sudden, the wingers are starting to get more selfish because they want to cut in and do their thing. They're not connecting like they once did. That's why Delap going to Chelsea worries me as an Arsenal fan." Walcott went on to explain how traditionally, wearing the number nine for Chelsea has been a Herculean task with stars like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Fernando Torres shouldering the burden, yet he tips Delap to succeed and even take over Harry Kane as England's frontman star. "I know they have been going for that No 9, that Didier Drogba type, it's that curse of the No 9. Delap can break that curse because he's a really good striker. He's the next one after Harry Kane for England." Having shared the pitch with legendary goal-scorers at Arsenal, Walcott feels disappointed that Arsenal didn't make a move for someone like Delap, seeing potential and grit in the young striker. "(It) disappoints me as an Arsenal fan if you don't go after someone like that," he added. "You can see it in him as well, you can see his fight. He doesn't care who he plays against." Delap kicked off his career in blue on a high note, coming on as a substitute during their 2-0 triumph over LAFC in the opening match of the FIFA Club World Cup. Delap made an immediate impression, providing the cross that Enzo Fernandez converted to double Chelsea's advantage in the second half.
