Cannes mourns Palestinian journalist killed in Gaza airstrike
CANNES, France, May 15 (Reuters) - The Cannes film community mourned Palestinian journalist Fatima Hassouna on Thursday evening, cramming into theatres to watch the documentary about her life in Gaza.
She used to say this would pass, recalled director Sepideh Farsi ahead of a showing of "Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk" in the French Riviera resort town.
"And it will pass. She is not here but yet she is present, they didn't manage to defeat her," Farsi said, her voice breaking.
Hassouna, 25, had been determined to come to the Cannes Film Festival to see the documentary despite the difficulties posed by Israel's blockade, Farsi told Reuters ahead of the screenings.
She was "glowing with joy" the day she learned the film had been selected, Farsi added.
The next day, Hassouna was killed in an Israeli airstrike on her home.
Her death prompted the usually apolitical festival to issue a statement, opens new tab mourning her as one of "the far too many victims of the violence" in the region.
"Although a film is a small thing in the face of such a tragedy," its screening as part of the ACID independent film programme would be a way to honour the journalist, said the festival last month.
The screenings coincide with "Nakba Day" -- when Palestinians commemorate the loss of their land following the 1948 war at the birth of the state of Israel -- as Israeli military operations in Gaza and the occupied West Bank have again displaced hundreds of thousands.
The war has destroyed large swathes of Gaza and forced most of the more than 2 million people who live there to move multiple times, clinging on in tents or bombed-out houses and other makeshift shelters.
Farsi said she was doing all she could to bring the film and exhibition of Hassouna's photos, which document life in Gaza amid the war, to as many people as possible.
"Those who wanted to look away perhaps will now be confronted with her simplicity, her force, and she's gone now, and they know it," said the Tehran-born director.
Farsi added that she received a report this week from the London-based Forensic Architecture research group that had found Hassouna had been a target.
"It's hard to believe, it's like science fiction," she said.
"What many people want, is for this war to stop and for the civilian population not to be targeted like this. Monstrously."
The Israeli army said in a statement on Thursday that it had struck a militant in Gaza City overnight on April 16.
"Prior to the strike, steps were taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians, including the use of precise munitions, aerial surveillance, and additional intelligence," it said.

Media giant Canal+ strikes settlement with French tax authorities
Shares in Canal+ rose on Friday after the London-listed media conglomerate settled a tax dispute with the French Government. The StudioCanal owner, which listed in London last December, told investors it expects no impact on cash from the settlement. French authorities had accused the Paris-based company, formerly a subsidiary of telecoms giant Vivendi, of incorrectly applying lower rates of value-added tax on some of its services. Canal+ had warned that the dispute could have potentially cost it around €655million. It anticipates recording some exceptional charges in its first-half results, but told investors the settlement 'removes uncertainty regarding the possibility of a material additional disbursement'. Alongside this, the firm upheld its full-year outlook on turnover and earnings before nasties, with the latter expected to total approximately €515million. It came as Canal+ said it was on track to achieve organic growth this year because of a 'material one-off cash improvement'. But the business cautioned that this would be offset by the end of some contracts and the closure of terrestrial television channel C8 in February. The group's distribution deal with Disney+ ended at the start of 2025, resulting in its roughly 27 million subscribers losing access to the streaming service. In late February, C8 shut down after regulators revoked its broadcasting licence following accusations of promoting fake news and conspiracy theories. Consequently, its first-quarter turnover fell by 2.5 per cent to €1.55billion, although organic sales increased by 1.5 per cent, thanks to a robust performance by its film studios division. StudioCanal's recent box office successes include the animated sequel Paddington In Peru, horror film The Monkey, romantic drama We Live in Time, and comedy Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy. In a rare victory for the UK capital, Canal+ went public on the London Stock Exchange last year after Vivendi shareholders voted to spin off the group. It debuted with an estimated £2.5billion valuation, making it the LSE's largest flotation in two years. Just 45 businesses applied to join the main London market in 2024, compared to 59 the year before and 111 in 2022, according to the Financial Conduct Authority. By comparison, 88 companies delisted or transferred their primary listing from the LSE, the largest number since the global financial crisis in 2008, figures from EY have shown. Canal+ shares rose 7.1 per cent to 215p on Friday morning, although this is far below its initial public offering price of 290p.

The inside story of Kim Kardashian's infamous robbery to be explored in new documentary coming to BBC Three and BBC iPlayer
BBC Three and BBC Current Affairs have commissioned a new documentary on the inside story of Kim Kardashian's robbery in 2016 and its impact, with those close to the case revealing details about the crime for the first time. Featuring interviews with friends of the family, police officers and journalists who have followed the case, the documentary takes viewers back to that fateful night when the US reality TV star was robbed of millions of dollars' worth of jewellery in Paris at gunpoint nearly ten years ago. The BBC can now reveal new detail and insight into what happened and follow the story up to Kim facing her robbers in court last month, where eight people were found guilty. The Kim Kardashian Diamond Heist will air on BBC Three and BBC One later this month. It will also be available on BBC iPlayer.
