Kota Kinabalu: A 43-year-old contractor was charged with abusing his 11-year-old son by hitting and kicking the child. Shahnawan Jacob pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan to the charge against him.
Advertisement He is accused of physically abusing the boy at 7pm on July 24 this year at a house in Kg Inanam Laut. The offence Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 carries a fine of up to RM50,000 or a jail term of up to 20 years, or both, on conviction. The court set Sept 9 for mention and no bail was offered to Shahnawan who was ordered remanded further pending the disposal of his case. Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Bryan Francis objected to bail for Shahnawab on the grounds that it was a serious offence and she might tamper with the witnesses especially the boy as they were living in the same house.
Advertisement Shahnawab who was not represented, asked for bail to be granted as he needed to continue to work. In another case, a 19-year-old teenager pleaded guilty to causing grievous hurt to his neighbour by using a sword. Sessions Court Judge Hurman Hussain deferred Aidil Rahim's sentencing to Oct 13 this year pending the medical report of the alleged victim. Aidil is accused of voluntarily causing hurt one Abd Basa Akub with the weapon at 6.40pm on July 24 this year at a house in Kg Saga, here. Pending the date, Aidil was ordered remanded. Contractor fined after three workers electrocuted
The Kota Kinabalu Court Complex. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 7): A contractor was fined RM15,000, in default 12 months' jail, by the Sessions Court here for installing a solar lamp near a high-voltage electricity installation, which resulted in the deaths of three workers. E. Royston Tan, 36, pleaded guilty before judge Hurman Hussain to a charge under Sub-Section 55(1) of the Electricity Supply Enactment 2024, punishable under Sub-Section 55(2) of the same Enactment. The charge carries a maximum fine of RM300,000 or imprisonment of up to three years, or both, upon conviction. The offence took place in Ranau on December 13, 2024. Tan was the appointed contractor responsible for the lighting upgrade project. The court was told that two workers who were on scaffolding were electrocuted and fell to the ground when a solar panel they were installing came into contact with a high-voltage electricity line. A third worker, who tried to assist, was also electrocuted. Tan was unrepresented in court.

Housewife charged with 205 passports, fake MyKad in Shah Alam
SHAH ALAM: A 41-year-old housewife denied three charges related to possessing 205 Malaysian passports and fake identity cards in court today. N Paarvathy entered her plea before Magistrate Muhammad Syafiq Sulaiman at the Magistrates' Court here. The first charge involved possession of 205 passports under Section 12(1)(f) of the Passports Act 1966. If convicted, she faces a maximum fine of RM10,000, up to five years' jail, or both. The second and third charges involved a fake MyKad and three genuine MyKads belonging to other individuals. The offences allegedly occurred at a condominium in Taman Puchong Hartamas on July 11. The second charge falls under Regulation 25(1)(o) of the National Registration Regulations 1990. The third charge was framed under Regulation 25(1)(e) of the same law. Conviction under these regulations carries up to three years' jail, a RM20,000 fine, or both. Deputy public prosecutor Norhidayah Abdullah Sani proposed RM30,000 bail with monthly police reporting. Defence counsel Yogamani M Marappan requested lower bail, citing the accused's unemployment and financial dependence. Magistrate Muhammad Syafiq set bail at RM15,000 with one surety. The case will be mentioned again on Sept 22. - Bernama

JB clerk loses over RM90,000 in online job scam
JOHOR BARU: A clerk has lost RM92,163 after she was duped into taking a part-time online job which promised high profits. Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the victim received a link to an advertisement via WhatsApp on July 31 and clicked on it. He said the victim was connected to an individual named "Faniza" on Telegram and was added to a "Hadiah & Feedback" WhatsApp group, which promised commissions of 10% to 15% for completing a task. ACP Raub said the victim later made 10 transactions amounting to RM92,393 to six accounts at different banks from Aug 2 to 6. "The victim only received RM230 in return and realised she was being cheated when told to make more payments," he said, adding the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code. ACP Raub said searches done via the Commercial Crime Investigation System (CCIS) found the victim's money was channelled into three different bank accounts. He reminded the public to be careful especially in matters involving financial transactions with unknown persons.
