Philadelphia's Julia R. Masterman School again makes Top 10 in U.S. News & World Report high school rankings
Philly's Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School placed 8th in the national rankings, and Downingtown STEM Academy in Chester County placed 22nd.
BASIS Tucson North, in Tucson, Arizona, placed first in the 2025 rankings. BASIS Peoria in Peoria, Arizona, placed first in the 2024 rankings. Both are operated by BASIS Charter Schools Inc.
U.S. News' annual rankings of public high schools and charter schools rate schools on their graduation rates and students' performance on state assessment tests, and AP and IB exams.
Masterman, a Philadelphia "magnet school" with a highly selective admissions process and a regular top performer, finished 4th in the 2024 rankings.
Demographic data attached to the rankings shows most of the schools in the top 25% were in suburbs of cities. Of those top performers, 29.2% were in cities, 44% were in suburbs of cities, and 26.8% were in rural areas or towns distant from urban areas.
Among all ranked schools, 25.4% were in cities, 25.8% were in suburbs and 48.8% were in rural areas.

Near-term chances of an eruption at Alaska's Mount Spurr volcano now considered 'extremely low'
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Officials lowered the alert level for a volcano near Alaska's largest city to normal Wednesday, which they said indicates that Mount Spurr is 'quiet' months after showing signs of activity that raised the possibility of an eruption. Over the past few months, signs of unrest at the 11,070-foot (3,374-meter) volcano near Anchorage have gradually decreased, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory, which added that no ground deformation has been detected since March. The observatory characterized the near-term chances of an eruption as 'extremely low.' It said small earthquakes continued to occur more frequently than before a period of unrest began in early 2024, and that volcanic gases were still being released. But the center said this is normal for volcanoes where magma has moved upward but has not erupted. 'Minor gas emissions and a slightly higher number of small earthquakes could persist for many months to several years,' the observatory said. Mount Spurr is one of 53 volcanoes in Alaska that have been active within the last 250 years. The volcano has two main vents: the last known eruption from the summit vent was more than 5,000 years ago, while there were eruptions from the Crater Peak vent in 1953 and 1992, the observatory has said. In October, the observatory raised its alert status for Mount Spurr from green, or normal, to a yellow advisory status when an increase in seismic activity became pronounced and a ground deformation was spotted in satellite data. In March, the observatory said it had measured 'significantly elevated volcanic gas emissions' from Mount Spurr and said signs indicated an eruption was likely, though not certain, in the weeks or months ahead. That prompted Anchorage's mayor to encourage residents to be prepared in case of an eruption that could produce ashfall in the city. Anchorage is about 80 miles (129 kilometers) from the volcano. Volcanic ash is angular and sharp and has been used as an industrial abrasive. The powdered rock can cause a jet engine to shut down.

Maryland researchers find that otter poop can tell important information about the ecosystem
Otters may look adorable, but scientists say their poop is a goldmine of information. A new study from the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater, Maryland, found that otter poop, or "scat," serves as a natural report card for the ecosystem. A team of scientists at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center spent the past few years collecting and studying otter poop from these latrines along the Rhode River. Their study, published last week, found otter scat contains important clues about what's going on in our waterways. "As an apex predator and a disease sentinel, river otters can serve as a sort of an indicator of the health of the ecosystem and if things are or are not going well," said Calli Wise, the lead author of the study. By testing the droppings, researchers found that otters are eating fish and a lot of crustaceans, along with smaller mammals and birds, most importantly parasites. "The fact that river otters eat so many parasites is actually really important for the health of the ecosystem, and the people that rely on this ecosystem for a living." Wise says parasites help balance the food chain, and because otters live both on land and in water, the parasites in their prey can be an early warning system for environmental changes. "Seeing if that changes over time can be a flag, a signal to people when things are going well or poorly in the water," Wise said. Otters can even warn of potential risks to humans. "Those would be things that we'd look at as indicators of poor water quality or sewage or other things in the water column." The team hopes their findings will aid restoration efforts in the future. "It's been really fun to see otters popping up in more urban spaces and see people get excited about conservation related to this species."
