Chandigarh: Amid the heightened security in the state to ensure peaceful
Independence Day celebrations
, the Punjab Police on Friday conducted a cordon and search operation (CASO) at 151 railway stations across the state.
Special DGP (Law & Order) Arpit Shukla said 72 suspicious persons were rounded up for questioning during the operation.

hukla further said the police teams also continued their drive against drugs on Day 160 of the 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' campaign and conducted raids at 352 locations on Friday, leading to the arrest of 96 drug smugglers after the registration of 59 first information reports (FIRs) across the state.
"With this, the total number of drug smugglers arrested has reached 25,149 within 160 days," he said.
Shukla informed that the raids also resulted in the recovery of 1.2 kg of heroin, 1.1 kg of opium, 12,627 intoxicant pills, and Rs 2.3 lakhs of drug money.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state govt will build a new house for the family of Mithun, a Class VIII student who was electrocuted at Thevalakkara Boys High School in Kollam. The govt will also fund the education of Mithun's younger brother. Minister of General Education V Sivankutty laid the foundation stone for the house at the location where the family currently resides. The house, being built with the support of the public education department and Kerala Scouts and Guides, is expected to be completed and handed over in four months. He said that thb e govt will fund the education of Mithun's younger brother. The house will be built over an area of 1,000 square feet at a cost of Rs 20 lakh. It will have three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room, kitchen, dining area, sit-out, and staircase. In addition to the house, the govt has announced various financial aids for Mithun's family. These include Rs 10 lakh from the state govt, Rs 3 lakh from the Department of Public Education, Rs 10 lakh from KSEB, and Rs 11 lakh from the Kerala State Teachers Association. Mithun, who was playing with friends, accidentally touched an electric cable when he tried to retrieve a slipper that fell atop a parking shed on July 17. CBI busts fake call centre operating out of Nashik resort, 5 arrested

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recently busted a call centre racket, allegedly run by six people in the rented premises of a resort at Igatpuri in Maharashtra's Nashik. The CBI registered a cyber fraud case on August 8 against the six accused, all residents of Mumbai, as well as unknown people and bank officials. The agency arrested five of the accused, identified as Vishal Yadav, Abhay Raj, Sameer, Shebaz and Durgesh. The accused allegedly entered into criminal conspiracy with each other and other unknown people, and committed financial fraud by impersonation and making phishing calls/deceptive calls, from an illegal call centre, posing as Amazon support services call centre. As per the CBI, the accused have been cheating citizens of the US, Canada and other countries and fraudulently obtaining proceeds of crime via gift cards/cryptocurrency. The accused allegedly recruited around 60 operators comprising dialers, verifiers and closers for running the illegal call centre. The investigation conducted by the CBI led to the recovery of 44 laptops, 71 mobile phones, and other incriminating digital evidence. Additionally, it recovered unaccounted cash amounting to Rs 1.20 crore, 500 grams of gold, and seven luxury cars valued at Rs 1 crore. Transactions of approximately 5,000 USDT cryptocurrency (Rs 5 lakh) and 2,000 Canadian dollar worth of gift vouchers (Rs 1.26 lakhs) were detected. During the searches, 62 employees working at the call centre were found to be operating live, and the process of cheating foreign nationals was in progress.

The CBI has arrested five cyber conmen based in Mumbai and seized seven luxury cars worth Rs one crore, 44 laptops, Rs 1.20 crore cash and 500 gm gold during a raid on an illegal international call centre operating from a resort in Maharashtra's Nashik, an official said on Sunday. Rainforest Resort in Igatpuri was raided after the CBI registered a cyber fraud case on August 8 against six accused, all residents of Mumbai, as well as unknown private persons and bank officials for duping victims in the US and Canada. Five accused arrested during the operation were identified as Vishal Yadav, Shehbaz, Durgesh, Abhay Raj and Sameer alias Kalia alias Sohail, the official said. It was alleged in the FIR that the accused entered into a criminal conspiracy to commit financial fraud by impersonation and making phishing calls/deceptive calls from their illegal call centre, posing as Amazon Support Services Call Centre. They were operating from rented premises in Igatpuri's Rainforest Resort, the CBI said. The FIR said that the accused have been cheating citizens of the US, Canada and other countries and fraudulently obtaining proceeds of crime via gift cards/cryptocurrency. The call centre was run with the help of 60 operators comprising diallers, verifiers and closers, the CBI said. Investigation by the CBI has resulted in the recovery of 44 laptops and 71 mobile phones and other incriminating digital evidence, as well as the recovery of unaccounted cash of Rs 1.20 crore, 500 gm of gold and seven luxury cars worth Rs one crore. Transactions of approximately 5000 USDT cryptocurrency (Rs 5 lakh) and 2000 Canadian Dollar worth gift vouchers (Rs 1.26 lakh) were detected. During the searches, 62 employees working in the call centre were found operating live, and a process of cheating foreign nationals was in progress. The CBI investigators are analysing the data retrieved from the 44 laptops and 71 mobile phones that were being used from the call centre to target foreign nationals.
