Scoop14-05-2025

Youth Week 2025 is happening between 19-23 May and as Porirua has one of the country's youngest populations, it's only right that there will be loads of activities for rangatahi.
This year the nationwide theme of Youth Week is 'Take Our Place - Whai Wāhitanga'. The theme was chosen by Aotearoa young people and those who work with young people.
There will be plenty on offer in Porirua, from a street art competition, to sports, laser tag, free kai, health and wellbeing activities, and a jam session.
"With about 35 per cent of Porirua residents aged 24 and under, one of our big priorities is to keep tamariki and rangatahi at the heart of this city," says Porirua Mayor Anita Baker.
"Porirua City is working with local youth-focused organisations such as Partners Porirua and the 502 to make these great events possible."
The week starts with a focus on hauora/health with a free event from 1.30pm on Monday 19 May at Te Whare Rangatahi o 502, 3 Cobham Court, organised by Partners Porirua and the 502.
A Rangatahi Voices for Change Workshop will be held at Pātaka Art + Museum on Tuesday 20 May from 10am-3.30pm. This workshop offers advocacy training for rangatahi - provided by Te Whatu Ora, the Cancer Society and the Regional Kai Network Advocacy Group. Registration is required.
Te Rauparaha Arena will be brimming with sporting activities on Wednesday 21 May as part of a Sports Day, running from 11.30am-3.30pm. Try your hand at something new, impress your mates with some ball skills, or bring your togs and pop a manu!
The week wraps up on Friday 23 May with a Jam Session happening from 12-4pm at Cobham Court, where you'll find a free clothes swap, gaming and VR setups, basketball, market stalls, and lots of prizes and giveaways.

Porirua To Light Up For Matariki

Porirua is set to shine as we celebrate Matariki for 2025. The night sky will twinkle once more inside Te Rauparaha Arena, with delicious hāngi, performances and interactive displays, while our harbourside has a beautiful light display planned. Porirua Mayor Anita Baker says the long weekend and city activities are a perfect chance to connect with whānau and take part in what makes Matariki special - acknowledging our past, relishing our present, and looking forward to a positive future. "This long weekend has fast become an important time on our city calendar and I love how we gear up to celebrate life, give thanks and recognise our wonderful cultural diversity," Mayor Baker says. "I can't wait to see residents out, enjoying the night walk or heading along to what's happening at the Arena or Pātaka. Each year it gets better." From 19-21 June, between 6 and 9pm, a light display on Porirua's harbourside is a must visit. Dress warm and walk around the water's edge on Wi Neera Dr to experience something magical under the stars. There will be fireside stories, buskers and yummy kai as well. On the first night (19 June), people are encouraged to join the Ka kā te Rama light walk at 5.30pm and add to the sparkle with their own fairy lights, lanterns or torches. Indoors, the wonderful Matariki under the stars experience is back (20-22 June and on 28 June), along with Elvis Under the Stars (21 June), Fitness Under the Stars (23 June) and a hearty hāngi (26 June). At Pātaka Art + Museum, the gallery is honouring the central star Matariki, the mother of the Matariki constellation, who fosters wellbeing and health. From yoga to artist talks and live music, Pātaka is somewhere for creativity and connection. At the City Centre Library, enjoy a free storyworld and craft session on 18 June from 11am-12pm with children's book illustrator Joy Te Aho-White.

Sign Up Now For Porirua Has Talent

Porirua Has Talent is set to return riding high on the success of last year's event which showcased the talent of local tamariki and rangatahi. Registrations are now open at and close on Friday 4 July. Auditions will be held on Saturday 19 July, with the grand final on Saturday 16 August at Te Rauparaha Arena. Porirua Mayor Anita Baker says not only were the performances fantastic, but the event also brought the community together. 'The smiles on the faces of those children and young people just said it all. This event provides hope and inspiration to our tamariki and rangatahi and shows them they really can do anything if they put themselves forward.' Event organiser Tania Carr says last year's performers left her lost for words. 'I was stunned by the variety and depth of talent our young people brought to the stage. We had everything from spectacular dance moves to youngsters with spine chilling vocals through to talented guitarists, pianists and a seriously staunch young beat boxer. 'Holy Family School left the audience wanting more with their winning kapa haka performance and I never even knew what hip hop animation was until Sage Ngatai Skipper hit the dance floor.' Tania says she's really excited to see what new and unexpected talents are uncovered this year. We're looking for the best singers, musicians, dancers, and groups in two different age categories: 5-12 and 13-25. Again, there will be awesome prizes for winners and additional opportunities for those winners to showcase their talents more widely. Social media sensation, cultural comedian, actor and musician Pairama Wright joins last year's judges; NZ Alt Country Singer/Songwriter Ainslie Allen, Fredwyn Kisona of Tomorrow People, talented dancer and choreographer Aroha Davidson.

Colossal squid opens the door to the twilight zone

Central Stories manager Paula Stephenson offers a plate of squid rings which were popular with visitors. PHOTOS: ELLA JENKINS Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery was packed with young and old enjoying a deep-sea themed evening last Thursday. The museum hosted a twilight zone-themed evening that coincided with the museum's colossal squid exhibit as well as national Youth Week. Central Stories manager Paula Stephenson said the event brought 70 children and their families to the museum. The colossal squid exhibit was loaned to the museum for a month by Te Papa and it contains actual samples from an autopsied squid. Ms Stephenson said the museum put up a dark twilight zone room to host the loaned exhibit, inspired by the dark area of the ocean with the same name which colossal squids inhabit. Michael Kelly and daughter 3-year-old Sia read about the colossal squid at the twilight zone event held at Central Stories. Little is known about the colossal squid and only a few specimens have been studied, she said. As well as the squid exhibit, there was aquatic creature-themed activities, like making your own jellyfish or biscuit decorating. For year 9 students and above there was a dark sky photography workshop hosted in the Grant Gallery by Andy Davey. Mr Davey hosted an interactive talk and when it was dark enough, attendees went outside to put what they learned into practice. Ms Stephenson said she was absolutely happy with how the event went. Enjoying one of the arts and crafts activities on offer during the evening is 8-year-old Scarlett Pritchard. "It was great to see the kids ... be able to celebrate Youth Week and for the kids to be able to take part in some of these interactive activities and learn a bit more about the colossal squid and under the sea." Nibbles and drinks were also on hand for visitors including squid rings, in keeping with the theme of the evening. The night was well received by parents, some of who had not visited the museum before. "They were quite pleasantly surprised about how amazing it was, it was very positive comments, very positive," she said. The colossal squid exhibit runs until early June and staff from Te Papa will come to return the exhibit to Wellington on June 9.
