Kg Inderasabah Receives RM1 Mln Under MADANI Village Adoption Programme
TAWAU, April 22 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Finance has allocated RM1 million to the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) under the MADANI Village Adoption programme in Kampung Inderasabah, to enhance the well-being of the local community.
ESSCOM chief executive officer, Datuk Dr Jamaluddin Mohd Ali, said the initiative encompasses infrastructure development as well as safety and security measures.
'We have identified seven projects to upgrade Kampung Inderasabah, which include improving street lighting, upgrading the village jetty and enhancing overall security. An additional RM200,000 has been allocated for education and technical and vocational training programmes,' he said.
'Based on intelligence from ESSCOM's Security Division, the area is exposed to cross-border criminal activities such as fuel smuggling and piracy,' he told reporters after the Kampung Angkat MADANI central committee meeting chaired by Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, here today.
Jamaluddin noted that Kampung Inderasabah holds economic potential and the advantage of a united community, adding that if the model proves successful, the programme could be extended to other areas within the Eastern Sabah Security Zone.
ESSCOM will also implement the Sekolah Angkat MADANI programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan Lihak-Lihak in Semporna, with an allocation of RM100,000, said Jamaluddin.
Meanwhile, Nizam, who is also Apas assemblyman, expressed confidence that the initiative would positively impact Kampung Inderasabah, which falls within his constituency.
'This programme will add value to the village's security and socio-economic status, as it's a hotspot, located along the maritime borders with Indonesia and the Philippines.
'This initiative stems from the vision of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who aspires to engage all communities through coordinated services provided by government agencies,' he added.

Gaza-bound Aid Flotilla With 12 Activists On Board Nears Gaza Coast Despite Israeli Warning
A drone view shows the Gaza-bound aid ship Madleen, organised by the international NGO Freedom Flotilla Coalition, anchored off the coast of Catania, Italy, on June 1, 2025. REUTERS/Danilo Arnone ANKARA, June 8 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- The aid ship "Madleen" has entered Egyptian waters on its way to Gaza, despite Israel's stated intention to prevent it from docking, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported citing the International Committee for Breaking the Siege on Gaza announced Sunday. The committee, one of the aid flotilla organisers, said in a statement that the ship has passed through Alexandria, northern Egypt, and will "in hours reach Mansoura city... en route to Gaza." "The coming hours will be most critical," the statement read. bootstrap slideshow The ship also has 12 activists on board, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and Irish actor Liam Cunningham. Rima Hassan, a French member of the European Parliament who is also on board the vessel, posted a live photo update on her X account. Last week, Israeli state broadcaster KAN reported that Tel Aviv had reversed its initial decision to allow the ship to pass. The approval was withdrawn under the pretext of "setting a precedent" for future humanitarian aid missions. The ship is carrying urgently needed supplies for the people of Gaza, including baby formula, flour, rice, diapers, women's sanitary products, water desalination kits, medical supplies, crutches, and children's prosthetics, according to its organisers. Another ship operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the Conscience, was targeted by drones off the coast of Malta on May 2. Israel, rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, has pursued a devastating offensive in Gaza since October 2023, killing nearly 54,800 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Aid agencies have warned about the risk of famine among the enclave's more than 2 million inhabitants.

Many opportunities for Asean amidst US' tariff tantrum, says Asean-BAC head
HANOI (Bernama-VNA): South-East Asian countries can capitalise on the rollout of tariffs and other US policies by re-evaluating overlooked relations with other trade partners and opening their doors to international students. Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported, Nazir, who leads the council during Malaysia's Asean Chairmanship in 2025, emphasised the importance of strengthening intra-regional economic ties by boosting trade and investment within the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean). He called for forging closer partnerships with other countries in the world such as China, India, and Japan. The Asean-BAC head also proposed Asean and Japan collaborate in fields such as artificial intelligence and energy, as both have the potential to work together and build capacity in this area. - Bernama-VNA

US cuts Chinese medicine purchases threefold in April, according to customs data
MOSCOW, June 8 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- The United States drastically cut down the purchase of Chinese medicines in April, with imports in monetary terms showing a threefold drop to US$173.6 million compared to March, RIA Novosti calculations based on US customs data revealed on Sunday. The shipments of Iodine drugs made up the largest share of supplies in April, accounting for 75 per cent of Chinese medicine exports to the US. Additionally, antibiotics (9.5 per cent) and hormonal products (4.4 per cent ) also accounted for significant volumes of shipments in money. The major sellers of drugs to the US in April were India (19 per cent of US imports), Ireland (14 per cent) and Switzerland (13 per cent). China, with a 12 per cent share, ranked 12th, along with Hungary, Denmark and Japan. China and the US are now essentially in a state of trade war, which erupted after US President Donald Trump imposed a 10 per cent tariffs on imports of all Chinese goods in February, raising it to 20 per cent in March. After several reciprocal measures, the US tariff against Chinese goods reached 145 per cent, and the rate for US suppliers to China hit 125 per cent. However, already in mid-May, China and the US mutually reduced trade tariffs to 10 per cent, from May 14 for 90 days. Consequently, China started imposing a 10 per cent tariff on US imports, while the US levied a 30 per cent tariff on Chinese products as the 20 per cent "fentanyl" tariff remained in effect. In late spring, the sides accused each other of violating preliminary agreements. - Bernama-Sputnik-RIA Novosti
