He is yet to be arrested.
Roma Patil, now in custody, is believed to have partnered with Jamna Lal and another elusive mastermind, to traffic a substantial number of teenagers to states like Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat, and remote Madhya Pradesh, where women are purchased for marriages due to a skewed sex ratio. Jamna Lal, a native of Rajasthan, is in custody but hospitalised.
Senior inspector Harish Borade of Wathoda police station said that the gang has been charged under Pocso, as the rescued minor was medically confirmed to have been raped by the man she was supposed to marry.
Police said that Roma, Jamna Lal, and their accomplices lured teenagers with a promise to pay Rs10,000 to accompany them to Rajasthan and other states, perpetrate a drama of getting married, and later escape back to Nagpur on the pretext of seeing family. The rescued minor was also promised a similar amount for pretending to be a bride.
Police records reveal Roma's name as a recurring figure in trafficking cases, marking her a central player in a sprawling network.
Beyond Nagpur, authorities suspect the gang's operations extend to Bhandara and Gondia, where young girls from impoverished backgrounds are easy targets.
The latest case involves a minor abducted from Nagpur, promised money, and trafficked to Rajasthan. The girl's ordeal ended after police, acting on a tip-off, rescued her and arrested key suspects, including Patil and Lal.
Investigators believe the gang exploited economic desperation, targeting families in rural Maharashtra. "The accused used cash as bait, knowing these girls come from areas with limited opportunities," said a senior officer.
