Pipkins two-run blast helps send 11th-ranked Clemson past Kentucky to Super Regional
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Freshman Taylor Pipkins hit a two-run homer and Marian Collins went 3-for-3 at the plate and No. 11 Clemson eliminated Kentucky with a 5-1 win in the Clemson Regional on Sunday.
First baseman Julia Knowler doubled home Alex Brown in the third inning for a 1-0 Clemson lead.
In the third, Pipkins barely cleared the wall at 230 feet for a 3-0 advantage. Maddie Moore added an RBI double in the inning for a four-run lead.
Reese Basinger (17-5) picked up the win for Clemson (47-12), allowing one unearned run on six hits in 5 ⅓ innings pitched. Carson Falls (6-9) took the loss for the Wildcats (31-28).
It is the third Super Regional appearance for Clemson, which didn't start playing softball until 2020. The Tigers were swept in their two other Super Regional appearances in 2022 and 2023.
Clemson will be on the road for the Super Regional to face Texas. The Longhorns defeated Central Florida on Sunday to win the Austin Regional.

One of the most decorated players in Auburn and Southeastern Conference history, Newton led Auburn to conference and national titles with a perfect 14-0 record. He threw for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns while rushing for 1,473 yards and 20 more scores. He became the first player in SEC history to pass for more than 2,000 yards and rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single season. 'Cam Newton not only led Auburn to a national championship in 2010, but he produced one of the most prolific seasons ever by a college football player,' Auburn athletic director John Cohen said. Bleacher Report's Adam Kramer has predicted that Klubnik will win the 2025 Heisman Trophy in one of his hot takes about the upcoming year. "The schedule isn't easy, although it's plenty favorable given the state of the SEC. A strong showing against LSU in the opener will help get the train going, and it won't stop from there," Kramer wrote. "Klubnik has an abundance of talent around him on both sides of the ball, and it will all come together in spectacular fashion." Originally a five-star recruit hailing from Austin, Texas, Klubnik was ranked as the No. 2 quarterback and No. 6 player in the nation by 247 Sports in the 2022 recruiting class. He was expected to immediately make Clemson a championship contender. His college career got off to a slower start than expected. Klubnik didn't play much as a freshman, but his 2023 season as a first-time starter was not impressive. VIRGINIA WATER, England (AP) — Robert MacIntyre and Tyrrell Hatton have secured automatic qualification to Europe's Ryder Cup team for next month's matches at Bethpage Black, leaving just one guaranteed place up for grabs. Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood were already sure to be on the team, so captain Luke Donald knows five of his players for the defense of the cup on Sept. 26-28. The sixth and final automatic spot will go to Shane Lowry or Rasmus Hojgaard. Lowry occupies No. 6 place in Europe's points list but could be overtaken by Hojgaard, who has one event left in qualifying — the British Masters starting Thursday. Hojgaard needs to finish in a two-way tie for 29th or better to guarantee his place on the team. Lowry does not have another qualification event.
